The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

The timing was just right. When Shu Yu arrived, it was a quarter to six.

Everyone who was supposed to attend Old Lady Ruan’s funeral had arrived, and Shu Yu was the last. But nobody dared to blame her.

Before she came, the Ruan family brothers even hoped she would oversleep and not show up.

The Ruan family brothers, dressed in mourning clothes, were watched by Shu Yu, who wasn’t truly there to pay respects to Old Lady Ruan. Thus, when the person distributing white hats and hemp rope passed by her, they hesitated, moved slightly closer, but seeing she had no intention to take them, quickly withdrew and left.

Ruan Hai was there too. Originally, he wasn’t required at Old Lady Ruan’s funeral.

But since Shu Yu insisted on coming, he had to summon all his energy to accompany her. Right now, his face was full of fatigue, clearly indicating he hadn’t slept well last night, frequently yawning.

At six, the sound of suona and drums rang loudly, villagers lifted Old Lady Ruan’s coffin and carried it out.

The Ruan family brothers and their wives and children followed behind, whimpering.

Those scattering paper money, lighting firecrackers, and carrying wreaths followed suit. Shu Yu waited until most people left, then lagged behind, hands clasped.

Ruan Hai deliberately walked alongside her, whispering, ”County magistrate, why the trouble? You offered incense to Old Lady Ruan yesterday and spent a long time with her; she’s already felt your sincerity.”

”It’s necessary to escort her up the mountain. This way, I’ll know the exact location. In the future, if there’s a happy occasion in our family, I can timely come and inform her, right?”

Ruan Hai, ”...” He was speechless, stifled.

This county magistrate is indeed petty. She surely heard about why Old Lady Ruan died, so she deliberately came to stir things up. Saying so much yesterday wasn’t enough; she had to continue today.

Ruan Hai snorted inwardly, said nothing more, and the group slowly proceeded up the mountain.

By the time they reached the foot of the mountain, daylight had broken.

From a distance, Shu Yu spotted Ruan Chengqian and Ruan Chengchun standing not far away, apparently waiting to search for clues near the burial site after they ascended the mountain.

Shu Yu withdrew her gaze, quietly followed behind the procession up the mountain.

Old Lady Ruan’s grave was beside her husband’s; the pit had already been dug. As everyone laid the coffin down and scattered plenty of paper money, it was buried amid the cries of the Ruan family brothers.

After the busy ceremony on the mountain, it was already the auspicious time when they descended.

Ruan Hai had been watching Shu Yu all along, thinking she might cause some commotion up the mountain this time. Not only him, but most of the villagers and the Ruan family brothers had their eyes on her.

Unexpectedly, Shu Yu remained silent throughout, neither causing trouble nor uttering provocative words as she did yesterday.

Until everyone descended the mountain, Shu Yu didn’t speak.

Ruan Hai let out a silent breath, spoke to Shu Yu at the foot of the mountain, ”County magistrate, now that Old Lady Ruan’s affairs are mostly settled, would you like to rest here or return to the county town?”

Shu Yu chuckled; he indeed seemed eager for her to leave.

”I’ve been out for two days, it’s indeed time to head back. But yesterday, several villagers seemed interested in planting sunflowers, I...”

Before she finished speaking, a villager rushed up behind her, ”Yes, county magistrate, our family wants to plant. We have five acres, all suitable for sunflowers.”
