The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

Chapter 1236: Chapter 1236: Xiao Family’s Envy

The living room was bustling with activity, but no one noticed that something was off with her expression, except for Xiang Weinan, who furrowed his brow while standing beside her.

Xiao Shi wanted to leave, but it was clearly inappropriate now. Her husband was on this side, so she had to brace herself to stay, listening to this lively meeting between the two families.

The Meng family came to propose, which had already been agreed upon. Although today was Meng Pei’s first visit to the Lu family, he was talkative and forthright, chatting with the old lady without any barriers.

The matchmaker on the side even felt that she couldn’t get a word in.

Before long, Lu Erbai and Madam Ruan returned.

The chat between the two families became even more enthusiastic, filling the entire living room with laughter and joy.

Xiao Shi felt increasingly uneasy, but unfortunately, Xiang Weinan was there as the matchmaker who connected the two sides.

Seeing that it was getting late, the Meng family decided to stay for dinner.

Xiao Shi and Nanny Gu exchanged a glance, sighed, and headed together to the flower hall.

During dinner, Xiao Shi remained silent, occasionally glancing toward Shu Yu and Meng Yunzheng.

She recalled when Xiang Weinan came to the Xiao family to propose; back then, she was hiding behind the screen, secretly watching, feeling joyous and shy because she was to marry the man she liked.

However, Xiang Weinan, who came with the official matchmaker, did not look pleased at all.

He was polite, followed all the etiquettes, and everything necessary was done correctly without a single mistake, just… not happily.

At that time, Xiao Shi thought, it’s okay, she knew the imperial decree for marriage was sudden, and most people wouldn’t be happy about it. After they married, he would see her goodness, and they would live happily together.

But until now, there was no progress between them.

Looking back at Shu Yu and Meng Yunzheng, she thought, a truly harmonious and mutually affectionate couple would probably be like this when proposing, right?

“If you’ve finished eating, go ahead. I have things to do here.”

A low voice suddenly brought Xiao Shi back to her senses, realizing Xiang Weinan was speaking to her.

She paused for a moment and nodded, “Okay.”

Xiao Shi didn’t have much appetite, so after dinner, she went to bid farewell to Shu Yu.

Shu Yu nodded and asked someone to see her out.

At the Lu family’s door, Xiao Shi couldn’t help but look back, as if she could still hear the lively chatter and laughter from inside.

Nanny Gu sighed, “Miss, it seems we really misunderstood Monarch Lu Xiang.”

Xiao Shi, however, clutched her handkerchief tightly, abruptly turning around, her eyes becoming sharp, “Let’s go, back to the county office, to find Ms. Ren.”

Ms. Ren?

Nanny Gu quickly understood, “Miss means, the rumor we accidentally overheard about Monarch Lu Xiang back then, wasn’t accidental? It was Ms. Ren?”

Ms. Ren was the concubine that Xiang Weinan brought to Jiangyuan County.

When they first arrived in Jiangyuan County, they were unfamiliar with the situation here, so they paid special attention when they inadvertently heard Ms. Ren mentioning Monarch Lu Xiang.

At first, Ms. Ren was in the room talking to a young maid, suddenly mentioning Xiang Weinan’s unusual attitude toward Shu Yu, suspecting Shu Yu might become the future madam.

Xiao Shi had just passed by the door at that time; she wasn’t an impulsive person but couldn’t help being a little concerned when she heard Xiang Weinan’s name. After hearing Ms. Ren’s words, she went to investigate and indeed found Xiang Weinan treated Shu Yu differently.
