My Alleged Husband

Chapter 768: Chapter 738 The Truth Exposed_1

Another week had passed, marking the third week since Zhang Zhentian and Xia Jing’s car accident. They all hoped for their family members to wake up, but time and again were met with disappointment.

Xiao Wei had waited here for an entire week, waiting for his sister and brother-in-law to wake up. But why did it seem like fate was playing a cruel joke on them? These family members grew increasingly anxious as they waited, but the patients inside showed no response at all. Even the medical staff couldn’t bear to watch; they found it hard to believe that there could be such devoted family members, tirelessly waiting for so many days without ever leaving. But fate seemed truly unfair to them.

During this time, there was much talk that Old Master Zhang, Zhu Jun, had soured — that it was his son who had put him in the hospital once again. But who knew that the real reason for his severe hospitalization wasn’t anger at his son’s actions, but rather the overwhelming shock of his son being admitted to the hospital that had led to his coma.

Every day when Old Master Zhang awoke from his dreams, he would ask his grandson one question: whether his parents had woken up. He wanted to know how his son and daughter-in-law were doing, but every time the answer he received from his grandson and the medical staff was negative, his will gradually eroded away.

Everyone felt that the situation shouldn’t continue to develop like this. They wondered why patients who had passed the critical period couldn’t wake up. All the respirators had been removed, yet the two of them lay there silent and still, as though dead. Even though all signs of life appeared normal, they just couldn’t open their eyes.

Li Jiayuan had waited a long time; she had waited an entire week without her husband returning home, and she grew worried. Her unease mounted — she felt the situation couldn’t be so simple.

Her husband had never been away for so long on a business trip before. Moreover, this time wasn’t a business trip but a return to China. Why hadn’t there been any news after so many days? Although he called her every night, her deep-seated anxiety continued to intensify.

She decided to return to China to find out for herself. She wanted to uncover what significant event had kept her husband from home for a whole week, having only short phone calls with his wife before hastily hanging up. She needed to know what had them so rushed.

At that moment, Lei Kai entered. Seeing his mother had packed all her luggage ready to leave, he didn’t know what she was planning and quickly asked, ”Mom, what are you doing? Why have you packed so much stuff? Are you going on a trip, or are you planning to return to China?”

Li Jiayuan was puzzled. Why did her son assume she was going back to China when she hadn’t mentioned her destination? Did her son know something?

”Kai, tell your mom, do you know what happened to your dad in China? Why does everyone know but is unwilling to tell me? Tell me honestly, do you know what exactly happened?”

”Mom, don’t you know? Brother Yichen’s parents had a serious car accident a few weeks ago, it seems like they were about to travel abroad when the accident happened, leading to them being in a coma ever since, without waking up. Dad must have gone back for that reason, after all, that’s his sister!”

Upon hearing these words from her son, Li Jiayuan finally regained her composure; so that was the reason. No wonder her husband had chosen to go back to China without informing her about such a significant incident. Perhaps, he wanted to spare her the worry.

”Why does everyone know about this but me? Why do you all refuse to tell me, keeping me in the dark? You say it’s to keep me from worrying, but you should at least inform me — it’s a matter of basic respect. Don’t you understand? I am a member of this family. Over the years, I’ve never interfered with any decision you’ve made, but you must tell me about such matters. After all, I am good friends with him. Having been like sisters, I should at least have the decency to visit. It’s simply the right way to handle things!

”Why do you father and son keep secrets from me? Am I such an unreasonable woman in your eyes? Do you ever consider how I would feel upon learning the truth?”

Lei Kai hadn’t expected his mother’s reaction to be so intense. He had thought about telling his mother this news earlier, but he didn’t know how to broach the subject.

He couldn’t be sure of the situation, and if he had just told his mother, she might have rushed back to China to bring his father home. He was somewhat aware of the love and hate of the previous generation, but he didn’t realize some things could change so drastically.

”Mom, we didn’t tell you this for your own good. We know you’re not petty, but there are some things we really don’t know how to say to you. I was always worried whether I should tell you in advance, fearing you would feel we had kept everything from you and make you upset.

”But in the end, we decided that to spare you the worry and the back-and-forth travel, we would keep it hidden as long as we could!

”We just didn’t expect...”

”You just didn’t expect that I would find something wrong so quickly and learn the truth so soon, right? When you make decisions, don’t be so autocratic. At least respect my opinion. Even if you didn’t want me to go back, you could have discussed it with me, and I could have understood.

”But you constantly disregard my feelings, time after time. Do you really consider me a part of this family? Don’t you realize how embarrassed this makes me feel, and what people might say if they found out later?”
