The Valued Lady is Truly Dominant

Chapter 959: Chapter 959: Mother and Son’s Incompatible Eight Characters

There were pressing matters in the mansion, so Song Ci didn’t dare linger at Songshan Temple after finishing the vegetarian meal and returned to the residence, where the sun was already setting in the west.

Exhausted from the journey, Song Ci looked weary; upon alighting from the carriage, she was carried back to Chunhui Hall in a soft sedan chair.

No sooner had she taken a sip of tea when bad news arrived.

In the main courtyard, Young Master Dan was burning with fever since yesterday.

Song Ci’s heart tightened, her breath became unstable, eyelids twitched, and her lips trembled.

Nanny Gong quickly reassured her, ”Rest assured, Madam, we have already called upon Imperial Physician Chen, who formerly treated the fourth young master and others. The sixth young master is not breaking out in pox, just frightened and startled.”

Song Ci pressed her chest and let out a sigh—it scared her to death.

Previously, two boys in the residence had a fever and broke out in pox, which frightened her greatly, fearing that this little one would follow in his elder brothers’ footsteps. Young Master Dan was barely a month old; whether he’d endure pox was uncertain.

Fortunately, that was not the case—almost scared her into tears.

”How could he be frightened so easily? How are Deng and the others attending to him?” Song Ci frowned, her worry and anxiety evident. She stood up, glanced at her attire, and said, ”Have them come in and help me change clothes; I want to go check on him.”

...

Madam Song helplessly paced back and forth with Young Master Dan in her arms, gently patting his little body, yet the little boy cried himself hoarse and could not be soothed, his face flushed red like a shrimp.

Mrs. Deng, feeling sorry, said, ”Madam, perhaps I should try to comfort him? Your health is not fully recovered, holding him will tire you.”

Seeing she could not soothe him, Madam Song reluctantly handed him over, feeling utterly distressed as even her own son wouldn’t be comforted by his mother, tears slipping from her eyes.

”Madam, Senior Madam is back and heading to the main courtyard,” Nanny Fang announced upon entering.

Madam Song sniffled and nodded.

Song Ci walked in and heard Young Master Dan crying pitifully, Madam Song standing helplessly in tears, which filled Song Ci’s heart with melancholy.

She had already heard upon her arrival that Young Master Dan was startled entirely because of the sudden rainstorm and thunder yesterday, which frightened the child and caused him to fever overnight.

”Mother,” Madam Song greeted Song Ci with a bow, her face full of shame.

The child had been with her for barely two days, and now this—she felt terribly embarrassed as a daughter-in-law.

Song Ci waved her hand and approached Mrs. Deng, tenderly asking, ”Why is he crying so hard?”

”The young master is quite uncomfortable,” Mrs. Deng’s face showed fatigue and worry, fearing for the child’s illness.

”Let me have him,” Song Ci said, taking the child and sitting down, pulling from her sleeve the peace charm given by the temple master. She asked Mrs. Deng to fasten it onto Young Master Dan, ”This peace charm comes just in time to calm our young master.”

She gently patted the child’s little body, humming a soft tune, and it didn’t take long for him to quiet down and drift off to sleep, although his face was stained with tears and red all over, looking particularly pitiful.

Seeing this, Madam Song’s emotions were complex and hard to describe—bittersweet, lost, and slightly aggrieved.

”Mother, it’s my fault for not caring for him well, causing you to worry,” Madam Song said reluctantly, ”I overestimated myself; it’s better that the young master is raised by you.”

This little rascal must be ill-fated according to his birthdate with me.
