Chapter 726: Chapter 36: The Great Utility of Merit

Su Xiao, shirtless, leaned against the bed. His talent had successfully awakened, lightening the burden on his shoulders significantly.

Now, he only needs to complete the main quest, and this derivative world is essentially over. Unfortunately, he cannot execute the main quest for the time being.

Various signs indicate that most of the Contractors in the Holy Grail world have been killed, at least that’s the situation within the Derived World Contact Platform.

Other than Su Xiao and Umbrella Brother, the contact platform is eerily deserted. This is the first time Su Xiao has encountered such a situation; in the past, the Derived World Contact Platform was lively, with rivalries and people frequently seeking collaborators.

If what Umbrella Brother said is true, then there are only four Contractors left in this derivative world. Su Xiao is not counted among them; he is a Hunter.

Without considering the final goals of those three, from their actions, it can be seen they are clearing the field. If Umbrella Brother dies, will Su Xiao be next?

Su Xiao does not believe those three High-Tier Contractors will let him off easily, so before they can make a move on him, he must gather all the strength he can.

Checking the time, there are four and a half hours left until meeting Umbrella Brother. After hesitating for a moment, Su Xiao, along with Bubu Wang and others, left the villa and headed towards Fuyuki City Downtown Street under the cover of darkness.

...

The night in Fuyuki City was silent. The dim streetlights lit up the streets, making the city seem like a ghost town due to a series of recent home invasion murders and disappearances.

A car drove into Center Street. Su Xiao was driving, Bubu Wang in the passenger seat, and Sakura Matou in the back. As for Berserker Matou Yanye, he had been stuffed into the trunk by Su Xiao, which was a ’special seat’.

The car stopped in front of the great cathedral on Center Street. Su Xiao got out and knocked on the church door.

Dong, dong, dong...

Su Xiao knocked for a long time, but no one opened the door. Just as he was about to use special means to enter the church, footsteps sounded from behind the door.

”Who’s there.”

The voice of an old priest, slightly tired, came from inside.

”It’s me.”

Su Xiao’s voice brought a sudden alertness to the old priest inside.

”Could it be...?”

The old priest hurriedly opened the door. At this time, he was wearing pajamas, with an eye booger in the corner of his eye.

”Have you... entered Liu Dong Temple?”

The old priest stared at Su Xiao, feeling somewhat incredulous.

”Yes.”

”Come in and talk.”

The old priest stepped aside, signaling Su Xiao to enter the church. Once inside, the old priest quickly washed up and reappeared looking much more spirited, sitting opposite Su Xiao inside the church.

”There...”

The old priest wanted to say something but hesitated. Su Xiao took out a necklace and placed it on the wooden table in front of him.

”This necklace.”

The old priest’s voice was somewhat hoarse, and his hand began to tremble. He wanted to pick up the necklace several times to confirm it, but seemed to lack the courage. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ

”Xius is dead.”

Su Xiao’s words hit the old priest like a heavy hammer. The old priest’s eyelids drooped, and the once bright eyes became dim.

”Was she... in pain when she left?”

The old priest covered his face with one hand, sobbing, as clear liquid leaked through the gaps between his fingers.

”When I killed her, she had already transformed into a monster, the Resentful Orphan·Hughes. As for whether she was in pain, well.”

”The Resentful... Orphan.”

At nearly 60, the old priest sobbed, struggling to speak.

”Can you tell me what happened? Did she still have human traits?”

Seeing the old priest’s expression, Su Xiao recalled Hughes’ human mindset at that time. Hughes had rationality, whether in human or monster form.

”No human traits. When I saw her, she was already a monster, irrational, unable to speak. Perhaps her consciousness had long died.”

”Is that so... as long as she wasn’t in too much pain... that’s good.”

”She eventually died under that gun, and after death transformed into a green-haired beauty, looking about twenty years old, very beautiful.”

The old priest said no more, just covering his eyes with a hand, regaining composure after a while.

”Back then, if... no, there’s no if. This is the fate of people like us. I’m just a lucky one amongst them.”

The old priest stood up, and after a while, returned to the church, seeming much calmer, though his eyes were still slightly red.

”I’m sorry for the outburst. My relationship with Xius... we were once lovers, sigh~”

The old priest let out a long sigh.

”I’m surprised you could infiltrate Liu Dong Temple and kill Xius. What about the other resentment creatures?”

”They died peacefully.”

In truth, Su Xiao didn’t tell the truth; those resentment creatures died miserably, evaporated into gas by high temperature.

”All dead?”

The old priest was stunned, seemingly reassessing Su Xiao.

”Well... I already blew up Liu Dong Temple.”

”Huh? What do you mean?”

The old priest sat up straight, as if hearing something ridiculous.

”Literal meaning.”

This time, the old priest wasn’t calm. He stood up with a whoosh, as the importance of Liu Dong Temple is beyond words. It’s the core region of the Fifth Holy Grail War.

”Is everything fine under the mountain of Liu Dong Temple? Is there any anomaly? Like magic power erupting or...”

Su Xiao waved his hand.

”The magic power underground is fine. I sensed it when I deactivated the spirit body barrier.”

The old priest visibly let out a sigh of relief.

”Priest, I helped the Holy Church solve a problem this time, right?”

Su Xiao lightly tapped the wooden table with his fingers.

”Yes, Xius was once an Agent. This matter should have been resolved internally by the church, but those bastards from the Magic Association suddenly interfered, claiming the resentment creatures have research value. They’re simply out of their minds.”

The old priest handed Su Xiao a list. This list was made of fine parchment with the Holy Church’s emblem on the back.

[Prompt: The Hunter has triggered the ’Kotomine Church’ merit exchange mechanism. Items on the list can be exchanged with the Holy Church merit. Current Holy Church merit: 2219 points.]

These Holy Church merits are all that Su Xiao gained from bombing Liu Dong Temple. Except for Xius, none of the resentment creatures inside Liu Dong Temple dropped a treasure chest.

Su Xiao took the list, and a panel appeared.

Su Xiao wanted all three items, but to exchange for all, he needed 2300 points of Holy Church merit, while he only had 2219 points, which was awkward.

Su Xiao looked at the old priest. Noticing Su Xiao’s gaze, the old priest raised his eyes, staring at the ceiling.

”Priest...”

”Cough, cough, cough...”

The old priest started coughing uncontrollably as if having an asthma attack.

”Ah~ at my age, I’m no longer useful. What did you just say?”
