Chapter 712: Chapter 22: Transformation

Su Xiao examined the corpse of the Resentful Monk on the ground. No matter how he looked at it, he felt that this thing did not fit the ’style’ of the Holy Grail World.

It’s not just this Resentful Monk; the distant entrance of Liu Dong Temple also gave him a sense of incongruity. Could it be that Liu Dong Temple is now occupied by a group of ’monks’?

Su Xiao felt that this was unlikely. The main forces of the Holy Grail World are the Holy Church and the Magician Association. The possibility of ’monks,’ which are ’foreign forces,’ occupying Liu Dong Temple is not high.

Thinking of this, Su Xiao suddenly realized that his thinking might have fallen into a logical fallacy.

Firstly, the combat style of this Resentful Monk does not align with that of monks but leans more towards a biological mutation style, like the exoskeleton emerging from the body.

Moreover, when Su Xiao checked the information about the ’Resentful Monk,’ he noted one piece of information: Life Assimilation Degree 30%. This might be the key point, not the identity of the monk.

The information known so far is too little; the situation inside Liu Dong Temple can only be confirmed after entering it.

After hiding the corpse of the Resentful Monk on the ground, Su Xiao set off towards the mountain from the woods beside the stone steps.

The surroundings were unusually quiet along the way. Ten minutes later, Su Xiao arrived near the main entrance of Liu Dong Temple.

Entering Liu Dong Temple from the main entrance was not a wise choice. However, after Su Xiao arrived near the main entrance, he discovered that the two golden ’lanterns’ he saw earlier were not lanterns at all. He was misled by the temple’s setting, combined with the dim light and distance.

In front of Liu Dong Temple, there were two gate lamps. Because the lampshades were golden, the light they emitted was also golden. As for the sense of holiness, that was entirely an illusion.

At this moment, the doors of Liu Dong Temple were tightly closed, with no guards in front. Even so, Su Xiao did not plan to approach. He had a vague feeling that if he approached now, he would be detected by the enemy immediately. There were likely alert-type mechanisms or barriers near the temple gate.

Su Xiao’s goal is to complete the Talent Awakening Task, and it is best to infiltrate secretly without alarming the enemy. However, this is unlikely; he might have to fight his way in, otherwise, the task difficulty wouldn’t be so high.

Moreover, if it were a matter of secret infiltration, no one would be more skilled than Bubu Wang. Unfortunately, the LV.21 difficulty task is highly likely to involve conflict with the enemy.

Su Xiao circumvented the entrance and began to move along the perimeter wall surrounding Liu Dong Temple. After walking some distance along the three-meter-high wall, he heard sounds coming from inside the wall.

”Kill... kill me, please...”

The voice was extremely weak, as if it would cease at any moment.

”Kill you? That’s not happening; you can’t die before entering the Eternal Life Pool, hehe.”

”Fresh flesh, truly wish...”

”Remove your claws; this human is fodder for the Eternal Life Pool.”

The sound of arguing reached Su Xiao, and with a step onto the ground, he climbed onto the outer side of Liu Dong Temple’s wall, with only half of his head peeking over the wall.

Upon seeing the scene before him, Su Xiao’s pupils contracted, and he instinctively hid his head back behind the wall.

The scene beyond the wall was somewhat horrifying. Su Xiao was not frightened by the terrifying scene but by the sheer number of enemies.

Beyond the wall was a vast courtyard with over a hundred people, all half-naked, busily working in the open area.

From their demeanor and appearance, among these people, there were civilians, merchants, and perhaps others of different professions. They varied in appearance: tall, short, thin, and fat. But they all shared one common trait: their heads were covered with red ’ordination scars,’ identical to those on the previous Resentful Monk.

If carefully observed, it’s apparent these were not ordination scars but nerves frequently pierced from the inside, naturally forming these red scars, similar to pierced ears.

It seems that the situation inside Liu Dong Temple was different from what Su Xiao anticipated. It was not a large group of monks. The young monk he encountered earlier should be an Ascetic Monk, as could be inferred from the heavily worn-out clothing around the knees.

How could an often kowtowing, soft-spoken Ascetic Monk turn into a so-called Resentful Monk?

Upon seeing the situation before him, Su Xiao understood what was happening. Not only the Ascetic Monk, but now those more than a hundred enemies on the open ground also seemed to have been transformed from ordinary people.

Judging by their actions and gazes, they hadn’t lost their minds or were being controlled; they had already accepted their current appearance.

The hundred or so half-naked individuals were busy in the open area, with several large iron cages arranged at the edge, each containing dozens of terrified, slightly trembling ordinary people.

These ordinary people did not scream or make meaningless pleas for mercy. Some women gripped their mouths tightly, crying silently, a reaction resulting from witnessing an extremely frightening scene, leaving them without the courage to even cry out loud.

In the center of the courtyard was an array, quite peculiar, not drawn with dyes or blood but rather with a certain white powder.

Below Liu Dong Temple was a large amount of magic power, and these white powders could draw out the underground magic and form an array.

This array was circular, with a diameter of about five meters, and due to the ample supply of magic, it appeared with great three-dimensionality.

Su Xiao used the Eye of the Apostle to check the details of a middle-aged man among the half-naked individuals to verify his previous speculation.

[Comparing Intelligence Attributes between both parties... Comparison complete. My Intelligence is twice that of the enemy, acquiring 100% of the opponent’s data.]

Skill 3: Life Assimilation (Active LV.18), can increase ’Life Assimilation Degree’ and recover life value by devouring biological flesh. When ’Life Assimilation Degree’ reaches 100%, the Resentful Servant will evolve.

...

Indeed, it aligns with Su Xiao’s speculation. Liu Dong Temple is not occupied by monks; ’Life Assimilation Degree’ is the key to the transformation of these resentment creatures.

And now, Su Xiao was witnessing this transformation process.

Several Resentful Servants approached the iron cages holding ordinary people, with undisguised longing in their eyes; they craved the flesh of these humans. For some reason, they suppressed this desire.

Creaaak~

The rusty, bloodstained door of the iron cage was opened, and the ordinary people inside, like startled livestock, began to retreat into the cage.

A Resentful Servant entered the cage, scanning the ordinary people hiding in the corners of the cage. Among them, there were workers from salaried classes and charming nightclub women.

”This one, this one, and this one.”

The Resentful Servant pointed out three ordinary people, whose legs began to tremble, lips turning blue, clearly terrified.

”No, don’t choose me. My son is waiting for me at home, he can’t be without me, can’t be without.”

An utterly desperate young white-collar worker could no longer endure the terror inside and started shouting loudly, clutching tightly to the bars of the iron cage.
