Chapter 289: There’s Always a Time to Be Annoyed

Wu Pudgy was completely flustered by the scalding, just as he was about to step forward and berate Lin Zifeng, when Zhang Xixi, who had been quietly watching everything, suddenly came over and said gently, ”Minister Wu, are you all right? Lin didn’t do it on purpose, and the water dispenser has been broken for many days and we haven’t had the chance to fix it. I’m really sorry. How about we go to the hospital?”

Seeing Zhang Xixi’s concerned look with bright eyes and white teeth, Wu Pudgy’s anger dissipated. Now that Zhang Xixi was showing concern for him, why should he keep fussing? That would be quite ungentlemanly.

Seeing Zhang Xixi starting to smooth things over for him, Lin Zifeng subconsciously smiled.

”It’s okay, it’s okay, no big deal, I won’t die.” Wu Pudgy forced a smile, his facial muscles involuntarily twitching, but his gaze on Lin Zifeng had a weird feeling.

”Then, then you should still go to the hospital to have it checked, Minister Wu. With the weather being so hot, it would be bad if it got inflamed,” Zhang Xixi said with concern.

”Hmm, alright, then I’ll come pick you up tonight.” Wu Pudgy said as he touched his mouth and glared deeply at Lin Zifeng with an angry face, the bitterness evident in his eyes.

As he walked past Lin Zifeng, he paused deliberately, looking at Lin Zifeng’s joking face, wishing he could punch him right there.

”Take care, Minister Wu.”

Lin Zifeng chuckled.

”Hmmph!”

Wu Pudgy snorted coldly and left angrily with his hand over his mouth.

After Minister Wu had left, Zhang Xixi took a deep breath, looked at Lin Zifeng with some fright, and said sternly, ”Do you realize that what you just did was really over the top?”

”Heh, over the top? I don’t see how,” Lin Zifeng laughed, acting as if nothing had happened, as if playing a prank on Wu Pudgy had been unintentional. He took out a cigarette and casually took a puff, saying with a smile, ”Thanks for helping to smooth things over just now.”

”You don’t need to thank me, it’s me who should be thanking you. If it weren’t for you being there, Minister Wu probably wouldn’t have left,” Zhang Xixi said in her gentle, quiet demeanor, which became more charming the more one looked. Especially her pure and kind nature was indeed not something those modern women ’weathered’ by life could compare with.

”So you still have to agree to his invitation for tonight’s date, huh?” Lin Zifeng teased casually.

”What date? I, I was just talking about a work-related reception, and besides, Minister Wu is not that kind of person.” As Zhang Xixi said this, her voice noticeably dropped. She knew very well what kind of person Wu Pudgy was.

Heh, not that kind of person? If he wasn’t that kind, then why would he stubbornly refuse to leave your office? Even if you want to cover for him, you don’t need to go that far.

”If he’s not that kind of person, then what kind is he?” Lin Zifeng walked up to Zhang Xixi’s desk, staring at her with a smile that wasn’t quite a smile. The feeling of looming over her was really pleasant, especially with the splendid view it provided.

”This, this...” Zhang Xixi stuttered, her face stiffening. Wu Pudgy’s character and lifestyle were hardly a secret in their circles, universally known yet unspoken about. Having worked at Tianyu for so long, how could she not see what kind of person Minister Wu was?

”Hehe, Director Zhang, don’t blame me for not warning you ahead of time. As a man, nobody understands men better than we do. I advise you to go home early tonight, otherwise you might regret it when something happens and you won’t have any chance to regret it,”

Lin Zifeng teased with a cheeky grin, trying to keep his tone light and joking, knowing full well that Zhang Xixi, a smart woman, could surely understand his implication.

”I have my own judgment on this matter,” Zhang Xixi replied softly.

”Since that’s the case, you’d better be careful. The world is a chaotic place, don’t oversimplify things, you must not believe anyone’s nonsense, or you’ll suffer,”

”Thank you, I understand,”

”Hehe, why thank me? If you really want to thank me, just transfer some extra money to my card each payday—that would be truly useful.”

As he spoke, despite Zhang Xixi’s surprised gaze, Lin Zifeng shrugged his shoulders, strolled around the office a bit, then slowly left with a cigarette in his mouth.

Watching this man, who had no real connection with her but had engaged in a few imperfect encounters, Zhang Xixi always felt an indescribable sensation every time she faced him. As she gazed at his forlorn and weary silhouette, she began to feel a bit intimidated.

...

After leaving Zhang Xixi’s office, Lin Zifeng didn’t go anywhere but stood while smoking a cigarette, watching the serious expressions of the lovely ladies from the finance department coming and going—indeed, a different kind of pleasure.

Occasionally, when some good-looking young ladies passed by Lin Zifeng, he would whistle to flirt with them. Unfortunately, his shamelessness and boredom did not win their favor, but at least they didn’t find him repulsive.

With nothing better to do that afternoon, Lin Zifeng turned on his new office computer, selected personally by Zhang Xixi, which was really quite handy.

His usual pastimes were nothing more than gaming, watching movies, or reading the latest popular online novels. However, he didn’t feel like reading anything today.

Having been back in the country for over a month, he had mostly been living a reclusive lifestyle, dealing daily with his parents at home. Although they were both beautiful, he had grown tired of them, just like the internet saying goes: Even the best can become nauseating after a while.

Out of sheer boredom, Lin Zifeng clicked on some of the popular news on Sohu to broaden his knowledge. After all, it wouldn’t do to be clueless about current events both domestic and foreign upon his return, and to be unable to answer when asked what had been happening lately—it’d be embarrassing to admit he’d just come back from abroad.

After browsing through some celebrity gossip, he then looked into some domestic and foreign military developments. Eventually, out of boredom, Lin Zifeng absentmindedly clicked on the last line on Sohu’s page: ”A Day in the Life of the People of Huaxia.”

When he opened the webpage, Lin Zifeng was completely shocked by the content!

The headline read:

A construction worker was beaten by his boss for being late for three hours.

When he got to the last character, Lin Zifeng’s eyes began to show a hint of icy coldness, because the article described how a rural migrant worker who was late due to taking his child to school was humiliated by his boss and beaten with a stool for three full hours! Throughout the ordeal, no one stepped forward to help, resulting in the worker’s death on the scene. Later, when the family members, including the children, came to seek an explanation, they too were all sent to the hospital by the beatings....
