Chapter 287: Temptation in the Office

When the meal finally ended around one in the afternoon, Lin Zifeng had exhausted every trick he knew to fend off Mu Yang’s entanglement. Fortunately, his rich emotional experiences over the years had at least granted him some insight into the hearts of women. However, Mu Yang was indeed the most ’bizarre’ person he had encountered in all these years.

Upon leaving the restaurant and with no other plans for the day, Lin Zifeng casually returned to the finance department only to be surprised that Zheng Xiaofang and Song Weiwei, who had been so friendly with him that morning, were now ignoring him.

What was going on? Were they not on good terms just two hours ago? How could women be so fickle?

”Sister Fang, I can’t help but feel that Big Brother Zifeng and that IT department’s Mu Yang have an unusual relationship. They seemed quite familiar with each other, don’t you think? Did you notice that Mu Yang seemed to dislike us during the meal, as if there was a hint of aversion?”

Inside the finance department’s water cooler room, as she watched Lin Zifeng pass by, Song Weiwei suddenly recalled the earlier scene and felt a surge of displeasure. After all, pettiness between women, especially over a man, was inevitable and jealousy was bound to arise.

If not for her lower status, she might have even confronted Mu Yang; indeed, the scene had been quite upsetting to her.

”Don’t talk nonsense. It’s better if you refrain from discussing such matters within the company. Don’t you know that there are many gossips here who love to distort the truth? If Manager Mu were to hear about this, no one in the company could protect you.”

”But what I’m saying isn’t false at all. You saw it too just now. Didn’t you notice that Manager Mu seems to have some prejudice against Big Brother Zifeng? And judging by their behavior, they appeared to be old acquaintances, meeting with such a bang. It’s hard not to be suspicious.”

”Stop talking about it. These things aren’t your concern. You’d better just focus on the tasks at hand. Whatever their relationship is, even if it’s that kind of relationship, it’s none of our business to meddle.”

Seeing that Song Weiwei seemed eager to go on, Zheng Xiaofang quickly scolded her, ”If you want to keep your job, you’d better pretend you didn’t see anything and certainly don’t spread rumors. Otherwise, if you get involved with them, you won’t even know how you died. I’m not trying to scare you. Do you even realize who Mu Yang is?” After pausing to think, she added, ”Go back to work. You can see and hear such things, but you must not speak of them. If you want a decent future, listen to me.”

Zheng Xiaofang could only say so much to her friend. Knowing what kind of person Song Weiwei was, if it weren’t for their college association, Song Weiwei wouldn’t have been able to climb to her current position. But precisely for this reason, Zheng didn’t want her close friend to get into trouble. After all, society was much more complex than school, which was but a microcosm of it. In a corporate world full of hidden dangers, it was better to play dumb than to be a reckless whistleblower.

”Alright, Sister Fang.” Song Weiwei’s expression clearly showed her discomfort. She sulked, feeling unfairly treated. Why should others be allowed to walk all over her while she couldn’t even voice her complaints behind their backs?

Just thinking about Mu Yang, that detestable figure, left her teeth itching with annoyance. Yet, that was the harsh reality—when one’s voice carried little weight, one’s words amounted to nothing more than empty talk...

After returning to his office, Lin Zifeng glanced intentionally or otherwise at Zhang Xixi’s Director’s office, noticing that the door was ajar. Driven by curiosity, he still walked over to see what attitude this woman, who had encountered him more than once in the elevator, displayed while at work.

As soon as he took a step, Lin Zifeng’s ears involuntarily twitched twice.

”Xixi, you’re always holed up in the office and never go out for a stroll; aren’t you afraid you’ll get sick from staying in all the time? And you work so hard, it seems like you’re only making dowries for others. As far as I know, your current monthly salary is just fifty thousand, right? In a place like Zhonghai City with high consumption and standards, is that enough for you? I’ve heard that your parents are construction workers. As a girl alone out in the world, don’t you find it exhausting...?”

Without guessing, there was another sleazy man in the office trying to seduce Zhang Xixi. However, his approach was truly vulgar. Even if you wanted to court or pursue someone, you should at least show some creativity, right? Always using your wealth to entice others, are you really satisfied with such transactional pleasures?

Zhang Xixi sat up straight, gripping her pen tightly, her bright eyes shining with a watery glow as she stared at the computer screen. The aura she radiated felt unnatural, as if someone was holding a knife to her neck, forcing her to sign a contract.

After listening to the obnoxious and disgusting middle-aged man’s chatter, Zhang Xixi remained silent, not speaking or expressing her opinions, allowing the middle-aged man to prattle on endlessly.

The spacious office with its gold wood interior was indeed incomparable to Nangong Bing’s President’s office. Nangong Bing valued comfort without compromising on a luxurious and grand taste, whereas, for Zhang Xixi, who had grown up in the countryside, having such a large office was far beyond her expectations. When Nangong Bing assigned her the office, she liked it at first glance. Even though it lacked a luxurious modern style, it added plenty of classical elegance.

The middle-aged man carefully surveyed the office and then praised with a click of his tongue, ”I didn’t expect Director Zhang to have such good taste. Just walking in gives you a warm feeling of home; it almost makes me want to stay here forever, haha...”

”Idiot!”

Outside, Lin Zifeng took a casual drag of his cigarette and muttered the insult under his breath. He had seen shameless, sleazy, and idiotic people, but he had never encountered such an idiot.

”That, that... Excuse me, Director Wu, I still have some work unfinished on my hands, and I’ll have to get it checked by President Nangong later. Could you please...?”

”Don’t worry, handle your things. I’ll just watch from the side,” Director Wu said with a smile.

Immediately, Zhang Xixi’s face turned sickly pale. He had completely missed the implied message in Zhang Xixi’s words; she was indirectly asking him to leave, but he, on the contrary, began to play dumb and completely misunderstood Zhang Xixi’s intention.

”This... This wouldn’t be right, would it?” Zhang Xixi’s nature was rather gentle, and she had never lost her temper with anyone throughout her life. Even taking the incident in the elevator with Lin Zifeng as an example, she had not brought it up to Lin Zifeng to this day, nor had she, like some women, incessantly pestered him about it. She knew it was a misunderstanding and had chosen the wisest course of action: silence.
