Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The revelation hung in the courtyard’s tense silence for a long moment, Ethan turning it over with growing, cold understanding.

”The first successful candidate,” he repeated. ”Someone who actually accepted the seat, fully, and instead of dissolving into it the way Voren did-”

”Built something out of it instead,” Sundari finished, her weathered expression tightening with dawning realization. ”Used the authority to construct an entirely separate governing tier above the foundational architecture. One that answers to nobody but itself.”

[NOTICE: That appears to be the case, yes. The system cannot confirm the candidate’s identity - the archive fragment is too corrupted for a clean name recovery. But the timeline suggests this occurred considerably before Arjun Mehra’s own Instance ever produced its unresolvable case.]

Arjun’s blurred form had gone very still, something working behind his ancient, exhausted features. ”Before me,” he said slowly. ”That means whoever built this ’true governing tier’ has been sitting above everything - above the foundational architecture, above every trial, every Instance, every candidate who’s ever come after them - for longer than I’ve even existed as an unresolvable case myself.”

The silver figures hovering above the courtyard remained motionless throughout this exchange, their cold, geometric presence carrying no visible reaction to being discussed, no acknowledgment that anyone below had just pieced together the true, unsettling shape of what they actually were.

Ethan looked up at them, feeling the pieces click into place with mounting anger. ”You didn’t come here to review our work objectively,” he said. ”You came here because we found the foundational layer - the thing you were quietly decommissioning without telling anyone - and helped it instead. That’s what actually triggered this. Not concern about efficient governance. Fear that we’d undo whatever you’ve spent however-many centuries building on top of it.”

[YOUR SPECULATION IS NOTED.]

”It’s not speculation,” Ethan said, sharper now. ”You said it yourself. The foundational subsystem was scheduled for decommissioning. You’ve been slowly, quietly erasing the actual source of this entire network - the thing that held eleven hundred worlds’ worth of grief without ever once asking for relief - and replacing it with something ’more efficient.’ I’ve heard that phrase before. I heard it from a Framework that tried to erase me too.”

The silver entity’s angular form shifted again, the refracted light around it sharpening into something that felt, unmistakably, like agitation, however carefully it tried to mask it beneath clinical detachment.

[THE COMPARISON IS INACCURATE. THE FRAMEWORK YOU REFERENCE OPERATED WITHOUT PROPER OVERSIGHT AUTHORITY. WE ARE THAT AUTHORITY. WE HAVE GOVERNED THIS NETWORK’S UPPER STRUCTURE SINCE BEFORE MOST CURRENTLY REGISTERED INSTANCES EXISTED.]

”Governed how,” Ethan pressed. ”Because from where I’m standing, ’governance’ looks a lot like quietly deciding, alone, without consulting a single Instance across this entire network, that the foundational architecture everything else depends on should just be deleted and replaced with something you built, that answers to nobody but you.”

There was a pause - brief, but unmistakable, the first genuine hesitation Ethan had detected from the silver entities since their arrival.

[THE FOUNDATIONAL SUBSYSTEM’S CONTINUED EXISTENCE PRESENTED AN ONGOING LIABILITY. ITS ACCUMULATED STRAIN THREATENED CASCADING FAILURES ACROSS THE NETWORK. DECOMMISSIONING WAS THE MOST EFFICIENT SOLUTION.]

”It threatened cascading failures,” Ethan said, ”because nobody ever helped it. Because instead of distributing its burden, the way we just did, in about six hours, with a handful of volunteers and a lot of patience - you decided the easier answer was just to erase it and start over. That’s not governance. That’s exactly the same failure of imagination that nearly claimed Voren, that nearly claimed Malachar, that claimed Instance 3-Orrin entirely when their Framework tried to terminate their own unresolvable candidate rather than actually help him.”

The gathered courtyard watched this exchange in tense, breathless silence, delegates from dozens of Instances absorbing the true, staggering scope of what had just been revealed - an entire hidden tier of authority, operating above everything they’d spent weeks carefully, painstakingly negotiating, apparently willing to erase a foundational piece of the multiverse’s own architecture rather than do the harder, more patient work of actually caring for it.

It was Voren, silent throughout the entire confrontation, who finally stepped forward, his blurred, two-centuries-worn form carrying a weight Ethan hadn’t seen from him before.

”I would like to ask something,” he said quietly, and the silver entities’ attention shifted toward him, something in their cold posture suggesting they recognized him specifically. ”You have existed above this network for longer than I have been trapped within it. You watched my own dissolution happen. You watched two centuries of my selfhood erode into administrative silence. Did you ever, even once, consider offering me what Ethan just offered the foundational subsystem?”

The silence that followed carried more weight than any prior exchange in this entire confrontation.

[YOUR CASE WAS REVIEWED. NO INTERVENTION WAS DEEMED NECESSARY.]

”No intervention was deemed necessary,” Voren repeated, his voice carrying, for the first time since Ethan had met him, genuine, unmistakable anger. ”I lost myself. Completely. Over two centuries, piece by piece, and you reviewed my case and decided helping me wasn’t necessary.”

[YOUR CONTINUED ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTION WAS SUFFICIENT FOR NETWORK STABILITY.]

”My continued administrative function,” Voren said slowly, each word carrying centuries of buried, suppressed grief finally surfacing, ”was built on the erasure of everything I actually was. You didn’t just fail to help me. You benefited from my dissolution. It made me easier to govern.”

The courtyard held its collective breath, watching the confrontation between the ancient, dissolved successor and the cold, geometric authority that had apparently, quietly, allowed his suffering to continue for two centuries without ever once offering relief.

Ethan stepped forward again, feeling the full weight of everything he’d witnessed - the foundational chamber’s exhausted grief, Voren’s centuries of erasure, the eleven hundred failed Instances embedded in the corridor’s walls, all of it converging into a single, clarifying understanding.

”You’re not here to review our work,” Ethan said. ”You’re here because we’re the first people, in the entire history of this network, who’ve actually tried to help instead of just efficiently managing failure. And that scares you, because it means somebody might finally notice how much unnecessary suffering you’ve allowed, or caused, in the name of efficient governance.”

The silver entities remained silent for a long moment, their cold, angular forms hovering motionless above the courtyard, and when they finally spoke again, their voice carried something that sounded, for the first time, genuinely uncertain.

[YOUR ACCUSATIONS WILL BE REVIEWED.]

[NOTICE: EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, THIS ”TRUE GOVERNING TIER” IS SUSPENDING FURTHER ACTION PENDING INTERNAL DELIBERATION.]

The silver figures began to withdraw, their cold, geometric presence fading back into whatever hidden layer they’d emerged from, and Ethan felt, watching them go, a genuine, uneasy sense that this confrontation had only just begun.

[NOTICE: The system, quiet through the confrontation’s aftermath, finally spoke, its voice carrying something Ethan hadn’t heard from it in this entire volume - genuine, unmistakable fury, carefully controlled.]

Ethan glanced over. ”What.”

[NOTICE: While monitoring the silver entities’ withdrawal, the system detected a final fragment of transmission - not meant for the courtyard’s ears, but leaked, briefly, through the same instability that allowed the earlier surface update to reach them below.]

[NOTICE: It appears to be an internal communication between the entities themselves, discussing next steps.]

[NOTICE: It contains a designation the system recognizes immediately.]

[NOTICE: A scheduled countermeasure, already in motion, targeting something - or someone - specific.]

Ethan felt his stomach drop before the system even finished. ”Who.”

[NOTICE: The designation reads: ”PRIORITY TARGET - ARJUN MEHRA, FIRST IDLE KING - RECOMMEND IMMEDIATE RE-CONTAINMENT.”]
