Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The vote came down, in the end, to four honest, differing answers.

Malachar chose Instance 31-Kestrel, the largest raw number of lives saved, his reasoning unchanged from the start but delivered now without the earlier hardness - a genuine, considered position rather than a reflex.

Sundari chose Instance 17-Dune, the slow famine, arguing one final time that the quietest suffering deserved the loudest advocate precisely because nobody else in the chamber was fighting for it.

Voren, when asked, was quiet for a long moment before answering. ”I have made this exact choice eleven times before, across eleven different sets of failing worlds. I always chose the largest number. I would like, this time, to choose differently, and see what that costs.” He named Instance 52-Thorne - total extinction avoided.

And Ethan, weighing everything said over the past two hours, found himself agreeing with Voren, though for a reason distinctly his own.

”Instance 52-Thorne,” he said. ”Not because the other arguments are wrong. They’re not. But there’s something different about a world losing everyone versus a world losing many. One of those, whoever’s left can grieve, rebuild, remember what was lost. The other just - ends. Nobody left to carry any of it forward. I think that’s worth weighing heavier than the raw math suggests.”

The vote split two to two, deadlocked, and for a moment the chamber held its breath, the trial’s failure condition - no unanimous consensus - hanging visibly over all four of them.

”We don’t have consensus,” Malachar said, tension returning to his voice. ”The trial fails.”

”Not yet,” Ethan said. ”We’ve got time left on the clock. Let’s actually talk about why, not just what.”

They talked for another twenty minutes, Malachar and Sundari finally, genuinely engaging with the reasoning Ethan and Voren had offered rather than simply defending their own positions, until Malachar, jaw tight, finally spoke the words that broke the deadlock.

”I still believe the largest number matters most,” he said. ”But I think - after everything I learned about myself in the last trial - that I’ve spent a decade treating numbers as the only language worth speaking, and maybe that’s exactly the habit this trial wants me to examine. I’ll change my vote. Instance 52-Thorne.”

Sundari held out a moment longer, then, quietly, nodded her own agreement. ”For the record - I still think Dune deserves an advocate. But I trust the reasoning in this room more than I trust my own certainty right now. Thorne.”

Unanimous. Four votes, one choice.

[NOTICE: CONSENSUS REACHED. INSTANCE 52-THORNE WILL RECEIVE STABILIZATION.]

The pedestal’s glow shifted, gathering itself toward the smallest of the three floating images, and Ethan felt a genuine, weighted relief settle through the chamber - right up until the Origin Engine’s voice continued, and the relief curdled into something considerably more uncomfortable.

[NOTICE: AS PER STANDARD PROTOCOL, THE TWO UNCHOSEN INSTANCES MUST BE FORMALLY RELEASED FROM CANDIDACY FOR ASSISTANCE. THIS REQUIRES A SEALING GESTURE FROM EACH CANDIDATE’S ASSIGNED WEAPON OR ANCHOR ITEM.]

A second pedestal rose beside the first, and two smaller lights detached from the images of Instance 31-Kestrel and Instance 17-Dune, drifting toward the candidates, waiting to be formally, ceremonially extinguished.

Ethan felt the Void Sword’s hum shift the moment the light approached him - not its usual alert readiness, not the eager hunger it carried into combat, but something else entirely. Resistance. A low, grinding refusal, the blade’s edge staying dark and unresponsive even as Ethan instinctively raised it toward the waiting light.

”It’s not moving,” he said, staring at the sword. ”It won’t respond.”

[NOTICE: The system has detected the same resistance. This does not match the sword’s established behavior pattern for any prior task.]

Malachar, watching, lowered his own weapon - the Ashcrown-adjacent blade he still carried from Instance-9’s arsenal - with visible unease. ”Mine as well. It won’t complete the gesture either.”

Sundari’s expression sharpened with sudden understanding. ”It’s not a malfunction,” she said. ”I think it’s refusing on purpose.”

Ethan looked down at the humming, unmoving blade in his hand, and felt something click into place, the same instinct that had guided every genuine choice he’d made across this entire story.

”It won’t let me formally give up on them,” he said slowly. ”Not because it’s broken. Because sealing this - closing the door on Kestrel and Dune, permanently, ceremonially - that’s not something it’s willing to do, even if the trial says it’s standard protocol.”

[THE GESTURE IS SYMBOLIC, CANDIDATE. IT DOES NOT PHYSICALLY ALTER THE OUTCOME. THE OTHER TWO INSTANCES WILL CONTINUE TOWARD COLLAPSE REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THE SEALING GESTURE IS COMPLETED.]

”Then why does it matter if I complete it or not,” Ethan said, ”if it doesn’t actually change anything?”

The Origin Engine was quiet for a long moment, the archival sky above pulsing slowly, thoughtfully.

[IT MATTERS,] it said finally, [BECAUSE THE GESTURE IS NOT FOR THE INSTANCES. IT IS FOR THE CANDIDATE. IT IS DESIGNED TO TEACH YOU HOW TO LET GO OF THE CHOICES YOU DIDN’T MAKE, SO THE WEIGHT OF THEM DOESN’T ACCUMULATE INTO THE SAME NUMBNESS THAT EVENTUALLY CLAIMED VOREN. REFUSING THE GESTURE DOES NOT SAVE KESTREL OR DUNE. IT SIMPLY MEANS YOU WILL CARRY THEM WITH YOU, UNRESOLVED, INDEFINITELY.]

Ethan sat with that, the weight of it landing with brutal, unexpected clarity - the gesture wasn’t cruelty. It was mercy, offered the same way it had apparently been offered to Voren, two centuries ago, one small numbing ritual at a time.

”Then I’ll carry them,” Ethan said quietly, lowering the sword entirely rather than forcing it toward the waiting light. ”I’m not gonna pretend closing a door makes the people behind it disappear just because it’s easier for me to sleep at night. If the cost of staying myself is carrying every choice I didn’t get to make cleanly, then that’s the cost. I’ll pay it.”

Malachar, watching this unfold, slowly lowered his own blade as well, something settling in his expression that looked, unmistakably, like the first genuine step away from the numbness he’d spent a decade building around himself.

”I’ll carry it too,” he said quietly.

Sundari’s weapon - a slim, ancient blade Ethan hadn’t seen her draw until this exact moment - likewise stayed lowered, unmoving, and even Voren, after a long, considering pause, made the same choice, his blurred form steadying, fractionally, as if the refusal itself had cost him something he didn’t have much left to spend, and given him something back in return.

The archival sky above rippled one final time, the Origin Engine’s voice returning with a weight that carried, unmistakably, something like genuine surprise.

[THIRD TRIAL COMPLETE.]

[RESULT: ALL FOUR CANDIDATES - PASSED.]

[NOTICE: NO CANDIDATE HAS EVER COMPLETED THIS TRIAL BY COLLECTIVELY REFUSING THE SEALING GESTURE BEFORE. THIS OUTCOME IS UNPRECEDENTED, AND THE SYSTEM MUST RECALIBRATE THE REMAINING TRIALS ACCORDINGLY.]

Ethan felt the golden light of the chamber begin to fade, the vast council room dissolving back toward the familiar terminal chamber beneath his own courtyard, and caught, just before the transition fully completed, one final fragment of the Origin Engine’s voice - quieter now, almost uncertain, in a way the ancient, patient system had never once sounded before.

[NOTICE: I DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE FOURTH TRIAL SHOULD ASK OF CANDIDATES WHO HAVE ALREADY REFUSED TO LOSE THEMSELVES TO EVERY MEASURE I’VE PREPARED SO FAR.]
