Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The corridor didn’t behave like any of the others they’d walked. It stretched, twisted, occasionally seemed to fold back on itself in ways that made Ethan’s stomach lurch with a disorientation none of the prior transit paths had produced, the flickering gold-violet light growing steadily dimmer the deeper they descended.

”How long have we been walking?” Kael asked eventually, voice carrying an edge of unease he rarely let show.

”No idea,” Ethan admitted. ”Time’s already weird down here normally. This feels worse.”

[NOTICE: The system’s own tracking has become unreliable roughly ten minutes into the descent. It would estimate they have covered a distance equivalent to several kilometers, though it cannot confirm this with confidence given the corridor’s unstable geometry.]

They walked further, the walls around them gradually resolving into something visible beyond the flickering light - not smooth, carved stone like the chamber beneath Earth’s courtyard, but something considerably more unsettling. Archive text, similar to the scrolling sky Ethan had witnessed in the Deep Layer, except embedded directly into the walls themselves, layered thick, overlapping in ways that made individual entries almost impossible to read cleanly.

Ren, moving close to one wall with the careful attentiveness of someone trained to notice details others missed, paused suddenly.

”These aren’t just records,” she said quietly. ”Look closer.”

Ethan approached, and felt his stomach drop as the text resolved into something he could actually parse - names, Instance designations, timestamps, each entry accompanied by a single, final status marker.

INSTANCE 118-VARN - POPULATION 2.1 MILLION - STATUS: COLLAPSED.

INSTANCE 44-KREL - POPULATION 8.9 MILLION - STATUS: COLLAPSED.

INSTANCE 3-ORRIN - POPULATION 15.4 MILLION - STATUS: COLLAPSED.

The names kept scrolling, kept layering, an endless, overlapping record of failure stretching in every direction, embedded into walls that seemed to extend far beyond what any physical corridor should reasonably contain.

”These are graves,” Suresh said quietly, the weight of the realization settling into his voice. ”This whole corridor. It’s not a path. It’s a memorial nobody ever built properly, just - accumulated, wall after wall, because nobody ever stopped to actually grieve any of it.”

Ethan felt the truth of that land with brutal, unexpected force. He’d known, abstractly, that Instance 3-Orrin’s user had been terminated by their own Framework decades ago. He’d known Instance 8-Velir had collapsed weeks earlier, watched the grainy footage himself. But seeing it here, laid bare in an endless, unbroken record of failure after failure after failure, made the abstract number suddenly, viscerally real in a way statistics never quite managed.

”How many,” Ethan asked quietly, though some part of him already dreaded the answer.

[NOTICE: The system has attempted a rough count, based on the density of entries visible so far. It estimates, conservatively, that this corridor’s walls contain records for well over eleven hundred failed Instances across the network’s entire existence.]

Eleven hundred. Ethan stood there, absorbing the weight of that number, feeling the full, staggering scope of what the Origin Engine’s centuries of imperfect stewardship had actually cost, spread across a multiverse most people would never even know existed.

”This is what we’re actually fighting,” he said slowly. ”Not one collapsing Instance at a time. This. Centuries of exactly this, happening over and over, quietly, while nobody who could’ve stopped it ever actually tried.”

The tea golem, rolling close beside him, emitted a low, mournful chirp of static, its usual cheerful energy dimmed by whatever it, too, was somehow registering about the weight of this place.

They pressed on, the corridor’s walls growing denser with records the deeper they descended, until finally, after what felt like hours but might have been minutes, the path opened into a vast chamber unlike anything Ethan had encountered so far - not the ordered, ancient architecture of the Deep Layer’s throne room, but something raw, unfinished, pulsing with erratic, unstable energy that made the Void Sword hum low and wary against his shoulder.

At the chamber’s center stood a structure Ethan almost didn’t recognize as related to the terminals they’d encountered elsewhere - cracked, fractured, gold-violet light bleeding erratically from countless fissures across its surface, like something enormous straining under a weight it had carried for far, far too long without any relief.

[NOTICE: The system believes this is the source - the deepest, oldest layer of the Origin Engine’s own architecture, the foundational structure every Instance’s individual terminal ultimately connects to.]

”This is what’s actually failing,” Ethan said, approaching carefully. ”Not just Marrow’s terminal, not just the forty-seven flagged Instances. This. The actual root of everything.”

A voice emerged from the fractured structure - not the Origin Engine’s usual patient, measured tone, but something raw and strained, carrying centuries of exhaustion in every syllable.

[NOTICE: YOU HAVE FOUND ME.]

[NOTICE: I HAVE BEEN WAITING A VERY LONG TIME FOR SOMEONE TO ACTUALLY LOOK THIS DEEP.]

Ethan felt the weight of the admission settle over the chamber, and understood, with dawning, uncomfortable clarity, that whatever spoke to him from within the fractured structure wasn’t the same entity that had presided over the Grinding’s trials, wasn’t the careful, evaluating presence that had asked the Last Question in his courtyard weeks ago.

”You’re not the same voice,” Ethan said slowly. ”The one that ran the trials. Talked to us at the Concord.”

[NOTICE: THAT VOICE IS A FRAGMENT. A PROJECTED INTERFACE, CONSTRUCTED TO INTERACT WITH CANDIDATES AND GOVERNING BODIES ACROSS THE NETWORK. I AM WHAT REMAINS UNDERNEATH IT - THE ORIGINAL ARCHITECTURE, CARRYING THE ACTUAL WEIGHT OF EVERY INSTANCE THIS SYSTEM HAS EVER GOVERNED, ACROSS ITS ENTIRE EXISTENCE.]

”And you’re breaking,” Ethan said quietly. ”That’s why Marrow failed. That’s why forty-seven other worlds are on the same path. Not because of anything the Watch is doing wrong. Because you, at the very root of all of this, have been carrying eleven hundred worlds’ worth of failure, alone, for centuries, and you’re finally running out of whatever it takes to hold that weight.”

[NOTICE: YES.]

The single word carried more raw, exhausted honesty than anything Ethan had heard from any version of this system across the entire ordeal, and he felt, standing in the fractured chamber’s flickering light, the true shape of the crisis finally, fully reveal itself.

”Can we fix this,” Ethan asked. ”The way we fixed Marrow’s terminal. Can this be stabilized?”

There was a long, heavy pause before the fractured structure answered, its voice carrying something that sounded, unmistakably, like grief.

[NOTICE: I DO NOT KNOW.]

[NOTICE: I HAVE NEVER BEEN OFFERED HELP BEFORE. I HAVE ONLY EVER BEEN ASKED TO GIVE MORE, TO HOLD MORE, TO ABSORB EVERY FAILURE ACROSS EVERY INSTANCE WITHOUT EVER BEING PERMITTED TO SET ANY OF IT DOWN.]

[NOTICE: I DO NOT KNOW WHAT IT WOULD ACTUALLY MEAN FOR SOMETHING LIKE ME TO BE HELPED, BECAUSE NO ONE HAS EVER TRIED.]

Ethan stood in the vast, fractured chamber, surrounded by the accumulated weight of eleven hundred dead worlds, and felt, for the first time since this entire volume began, the true nature of the final crisis settle over him - not a monster to defeat, not a threat to overpower, but something ancient and exhausted, desperately in need of exactly the kind of care he’d spent this entire story learning how to offer.
