Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Six hours wasn’t much time to prepare for anything, let alone a trial that had just, without warning, decided to stop testing candidates individually and start testing them together.

Ethan spent the first hour of it simply sitting with Malachar near the World Tree, the two of them saying very little, mostly just existing in each other’s company the way people do after surviving something that doesn’t have easy words attached to it yet.

”I want to show you something,” Malachar said eventually, breaking the silence. ”Before the next trial. I think it might matter, given what’s coming.”

He pulled up his own status readout - something Ethan hadn’t actually seen before, despite everything they’d been through together over the past two days. The interface looked different from Earth’s Framework format, sharper, more militaristic in its design, but the underlying structure was unmistakably familiar.

MALACHAR VESS

CLASS: SOVEREIGN (MAX TIER)

COMBAT POWER: 47,000,000,000

RANK: 1 (INSTANCE-9)

Ethan studied the number for a long moment, doing the math against everything he’d absorbed about his own stat sheet over the past several months.

”Forty-seven billion,” he said slowly. ”That’s - genuinely, that’s an enormous number. That’s the kind of number that would’ve ended Earth’s apocalypse in about four seconds if I’d had it during the early Chapters.”

”It took me a decade to reach it,” Malachar said, something raw in his voice. ”Every dungeon my Instance’s system offered. Every Calamity, every rare drop, every scrap of grinding I could physically survive. I gave up sleep for years. I gave up relationships, hobbies, anything that wasn’t directly contributing to that number, because I genuinely believed if I could just get strong enough, fast enough, I could force my world into stability before it tore itself apart.”

He looked at Ethan directly. ”Do you know what your own combat power reads as, on record?”

Ethan considered the question. ”Undefined. Error message, technically. My leaderboard entry broke a few weeks back trying to calculate it.”

”Undefined,” Malachar repeated, something bitter and exhausted in the word. ”I spent ten years of my life, sacrificed everything I had, to reach forty-seven billion. You reached a number the multiverse itself can’t calculate, by napping through most of your own apocalypse and occasionally getting annoyed enough to swing a frying pan.”

”Yeah,” Ethan admitted. ”That’s not fair. I know it’s not fair. I don’t have a good answer for why it worked out that way.”

”I’m not angry about it,” Malachar said, surprising him. ”I thought I would be, the first time I properly understood the gap between us. But sitting with what the trial showed me - all those silenced voices, everything I buried to build my throne - I think I understand something now I didn’t before. The number was never actually the thing that mattered. I spent a decade chasing power because I believed power was the only language my world would respect. You never needed to chase it at all, because somewhere along the way, without meaning to, you built something that didn’t require forty-seven billion combat power to hold together. You built trust instead.”

Ethan sat with that, the weight of it settling uncomfortably against everything he knew about his own accidental, effortless rise. ”I got lucky. That’s the honest version. I didn’t earn what I have the way you earned yours.”

”Maybe,” Malachar said. ”But you used what you were given differently than I would have, if I’d been handed it instead. That matters too, I think. Maybe that’s the actual thing the Grinding’s testing — not how much power a candidate holds, but what they built around it while they weren’t looking.”

The third trial’s countdown reached its final hour as the four registered candidates - Ethan, Malachar, Sundari, and the Instance 12-Kesh successor, who arrived through a hastily arranged corridor with barely twenty minutes to spare - gathered at the terminal’s chamber for what promised to be considerably more complicated than either of the previous trials.

The Instance 12-Kesh successor introduced himself simply as Voren, his presence carrying the same unsettling quality Sundari’s did - human-shaped, but subtly wrong at the edges, two centuries of absorbed administrative duty having worn away most of whatever individual personality he’d once carried. He spoke rarely, and when he did, his voice held the same layered, distant quality as the Origin Engine itself, blurring the line between candidate and the very system testing him.

”I have been waiting a long time to see another candidate reach this stage,” he said, studying the three of them with something that might have been curiosity, might have been exhaustion too deep to name properly. ”It has been considerably longer than two hundred years since anyone stood where I currently do.”

”Are you okay?” Ethan asked, the question feeling inadequate even as he said it.

”I do not know what that word means anymore,” Voren said, without bitterness, simply stating a fact. ”I exist. I administer. I felt something, faintly, when your signature first touched the terminal weeks ago - the first thing resembling genuine feeling I’d experienced in a very long time. I came today hoping the trial might offer me more of that, however briefly, before I return to what I’ve become.”

The chamber went quiet at that, the weight of what Voren represented - a warning, a possible future, a genuine, aching cost none of them had fully reckoned with yet - settling over all four candidates as the countdown reached its final seconds.

[NOTICE: Third trial commencing.]

[DESIGNATION: ”THE COUNCIL.”]

[UNLIKE PRIOR TRIALS, THIS ONE WILL TEST NOT INDIVIDUAL RESOLVE, BUT COLLECTIVE DECISION-MAKING UNDER SHARED PRESSURE. FOUR CANDIDATES WILL BE PRESENTED WITH A SINGLE SCENARIO REQUIRING UNANIMOUS RESOLUTION. FAILURE TO REACH CONSENSUS WITHIN THE ALLOTTED WINDOW WILL RESULT IN AUTOMATIC FAILURE FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS.]

The golden light of the chamber surged, swallowing all four of them at once, and Ethan felt the familiar disorientation of the trial’s transition settle over him - except this time, when his vision cleared, he wasn’t alone in whatever new construction awaited them.

They stood together in a vast council chamber, ornate and ancient, built from the same bronze architecture as everything else in the Deep Layer, four thrones arranged in a circle facing inward toward a single, glowing central pedestal.

[NOTICE: THE SCENARIO PRESENTED IS AS FOLLOWS.]

[BEFORE YOU LIES A SINGLE RESOURCE - REPRESENTED HERE AS THE PEDESTAL’S CORE - CAPABLE OF STABILIZING EXACTLY ONE FAILING INSTANCE OUT OF THREE CURRENTLY PRESENTED FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION. YOU MUST CHOOSE, UNANIMOUSLY, WHICH WORLD RECEIVES IT. THE OTHER TWO WILL CONTINUE TOWARD COLLAPSE.]

Three images resolved above the pedestal - three worlds, three sets of statistics, three populations counting in the millions, each one genuinely, catastrophically failing in different, equally devastating ways.

Ethan stared at the impossible choice laid out before them, and felt, for the first time since this trial began, the true, crushing weight of exactly what the seat he kept refusing actually asked of whoever eventually accepted it.
