Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The twelve hours passed quicker than any of them expected, most of it spent in the kind of quiet, unstructured rest none of the candidates had properly allowed themselves in longer than they cared to admit. Ethan slept. Malachar, by his own admission the next morning, managed his first full night’s sleep in over a year. Even Sundari, ancient and weathered as she was, spent the hours simply sitting with Arjun’s blurred, patient presence in the Deep Layer, saying little, existing quietly in a way she claimed she hadn’t allowed herself in longer than she could properly measure.

The fourth trial’s summons arrived differently than the previous three - not through the terminal, not as a private descent, but as a broadcast, delivered simultaneously across every registered Instance currently in contact with the network, the Origin Engine’s voice carrying, for the first time, an audience that stretched across the entire multiverse.

[NOTICE: THE FOURTH TRIAL WILL BE OBSERVED. THIS IS NOT PUNITIVE. IT IS, GIVEN THE UNPRECEDENTED NATURE OF THE FIRST THREE TRIALS, A NECESSARY TRANSPARENCY MEASURE. EVERY INSTANCE CURRENTLY AWARE OF THE GRINDING’S EXISTENCE WILL WITNESS THIS TRIAL AS IT UNFOLDS.]

Ethan felt his stomach drop at that, understanding immediately what it meant for Malachar in particular. ”You’re telling me billions of people, across dozens of worlds, are about to watch whatever this trial does to us.”

[CONFIRMED.]

Malachar, standing beside him in the terminal chamber, had gone very still, the color draining slightly from his composed expression. ”My entire Instance will be watching. Every officer. Every citizen. Halvorsen.”

”Yeah,” Ethan said quietly. ”I know.”

”I have spent a decade ensuring my people never see me anything less than certain,” Malachar said, voice tight. ”Whatever this trial asks of us, if it’s anything like the third one-”

”Then we’ll deal with it the same way we dealt with the third one,” Ethan said. ”Honestly. Together. It worked last time.”

Malachar didn’t look reassured, but he nodded anyway, and the four candidates - Ethan, Malachar, Sundari, and Voren - stepped forward together as the golden light rose to meet them.

The environment that resolved around them wasn’t a council chamber this time, nor a fabricated memory, nor a constructed choice. It was, unnervingly, exactly where they already stood - the terminal chamber beneath Ethan’s own courtyard, rendered with perfect, unsettling fidelity, except empty of everyone but the four of them.

[NOTICE: FOURTH TRIAL - DESIGNATION ”THE WITNESS.”]

[THIS TRIAL REQUIRES NO ACTION. NO CHOICE. NO COMBAT. IT REQUIRES ONLY THIS: THAT EACH CANDIDATE SPEAK, ALOUD, TO THE ASSEMBLED AUDIENCE ACROSS THE NETWORK, THE SINGLE TRUEST THING THEY HAVE LEARNED ABOUT THEMSELVES THROUGHOUT THIS PROCESS. NOTHING PERFORMED. NOTHING STRATEGIC. THE TRIAL MEASURES ONLY WHETHER THE WORDS SPOKEN MATCH WHAT LIES BENEATH THEM.]

Ethan felt the weight of that settle differently than any prior trial - not danger, not sacrifice, but something considerably more exposing. A multiverse’s worth of strangers, watching, waiting to see whether four people who’d survived impossible things could simply be honest in front of everyone who’d ever known them.

Sundari went first, her ancient composure steady despite the visible cost of what she was about to say. ”I learned that I let go of Arjun before I was actually ready to, and called it mercy because the alternative - admitting I simply didn’t know how to hold on any longer - felt like a failure I couldn’t survive naming. I think I’ve spent eight years telling myself it was the right choice, without ever properly grieving that it also might have been the only choice I had the strength left to make.”

The archival sky pulsed gently, acknowledging her words without judgment, and moved to Voren.

He was quiet for a long moment, his blurred form flickering faintly, before speaking with something that sounded, for the first time since Ethan had met him, genuinely present rather than administratively distant.

”I learned that I have been afraid, for two centuries, to admit how much I regret accepting the seat,” he said. ”Not because the stability it brought my world wasn’t real. It was. But I traded away every version of myself capable of actually enjoying that stability, and I have spent two hundred years telling anyone who asked that the trade was worth it, because admitting otherwise felt like betraying the very thing I sacrificed myself for.”

The words landed heavily across the chamber, and somewhere, distantly, Ethan imagined an entire world - Instance 12-Kesh, watching their vanished, absorbed successor finally speak something true after two centuries of administrative silence - absorbing that confession in real time.

Malachar went next, and Ethan watched him visibly steel himself, the same rigid, unyielding posture he’d carried when they first met settling briefly back over him before cracking, all at once, under the weight of what he was actually trying to say.

”I learned,” he started, voice unsteady, ”that I built a throne out of silence because I was terrified - genuinely, completely terrified - that if I ever let anyone disagree with me, even once, the entire fragile thing I’d built would collapse the way my family’s district collapsed when I was nineteen. I told myself unity required my absolute certainty. I told myself doubt was a luxury my world couldn’t survive. But the truth is-”

His voice broke, fully, the composed Sovereign of Instance-9 dissolving in front of a multiversal audience into something raw and unguarded and entirely, achingly human.

”The truth is I’ve been so afraid, for so long, that I forgot what it felt like to just be a person instead of a fortress. I don’t know how to stop being the thing my world needs me to be long enough to actually grieve everything I lost building it. I don’t know how to let Halvorsen - let anyone - actually see me like this, and I’m terrified that right now, in front of everyone, is the first time in a decade I haven’t had a choice about it.”

Tears fell, openly, unashamed by the point he finished, and across the network, in courtyards and command centers and quiet homes on dozens of worlds, an entire multiverse watched the Sovereign of Instance-9 - the Tyrant King, the man who’d unified a fractured world through sheer, unyielding will - finally, publicly, break.

Ethan didn’t move to comfort him immediately, understanding, somehow, that this moment needed to be witnessed rather than softened, that the trial’s mercy lay precisely in letting it happen fully, without rescue.

It was only after the archival sky’s steady, patient acknowledgment finally settled that Ethan reached over and rested a hand on Malachar’s shoulder, quiet and simple, offering nothing more than presence.

Then it was his turn.

Ethan stood there for a long moment, feeling the weight of an entire multiverse’s attention settle on him, and found, somewhat to his own surprise, that the truest thing he’d learned wasn’t complicated at all.

”I learned,” he said slowly, ”that I’ve spent this whole story being afraid that if I ever accepted real power, real authority, I’d stop being someone people could trust to say no. I built my entire identity around refusing things, because refusing felt safe. But watching you-” he glanced at Malachar, at Sundari, at Voren, ”- think I understand now that the actual test was never about whether I could keep saying no forever. It’s about whether I can hold power, if it ever genuinely comes to that, without losing the parts of myself that already know how to say no when it matters. I don’t know if I’m ready for that. But I think, for the first time, I’m not as afraid of finding out as I used to be.”

The archival sky pulsed one final time, steady and calm, and the Origin Engine’s voice returned, quieter now than Ethan had ever heard it.

[FOURTH TRIAL COMPLETE.]

[RESULT: ALL FOUR CANDIDATES - PASSED.]

[NOTICE: ONE FINAL TRIAL REMAINS.]

[NOTICE: AND FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE GRINDING BEGAN, I MUST ADMIT SOMETHING TO YOU, CANDIDATES, THAT I HAVE NEVER ADMITTED TO ANYONE WHO HAS STOOD WHERE YOU CURRENTLY STAND.]

The chamber went very still, all four of them waiting.

[I DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE FINAL TRIAL WILL BE, BECAUSE NO CANDIDATE HAS EVER REACHED THIS POINT TOGETHER, INTACT, BEFORE.]
