Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

They surfaced into a courtyard gone quiet with anticipation, word of the trial’s unprecedented outcome apparently having reached the gathered delegations before the four candidates had even finished climbing the stairs.

Ethan barely had time to catch his breath before the archival sky notification followed him up through the terminal, the golden light bleeding faintly into the evening air above the excavation site, the Origin Engine’s voice carrying with it a hesitation none of them had heard from it before.

[NOTICE: THE SYSTEM REQUIRES ADDITIONAL TIME TO CALIBRATE THE FOURTH TRIAL. NO PRECEDENT EXISTS FOR CANDIDATES WHO COLLECTIVELY REFUSE THE MEASURES DESIGNED TO ERODE THEIR RESOLVE.]

”Take your time,” Ethan called up at it, not particularly caring whether that came across as insolent. ”We just had a two-hour argument about which of three worlds deserves to survive. I’d like a minute before you throw the next thing at us.”

There was a pause - a genuinely strange thing to sense from something as vast and patient as the Origin Engine, but unmistakable regardless.

[NOTICE: THE FOURTH TRIAL WILL COMMENCE IN TWELVE HOURS.]

Twelve hours. Ethan let out a slow breath, some of the tension finally easing from his shoulders, and looked around at the small, exhausted group that had just survived something considerably harder than any fight this story had thrown at him. Malachar stood a short distance away, staring at his own hands like he wasn’t entirely sure they belonged to him. Sundari had gone quiet, processing something private behind her weathered composure. Voren simply stood, blurred and patient, waiting for whatever came next with the resigned stillness of someone who’d stopped expecting anything to surprise him - right up until today.

It was Malachar who broke first, an hour later, once the courtyard had settled and the various delegations had finally stopped hovering close enough to eavesdrop.

He found Ethan near the tea golem’s usual spot, sitting quietly with a fresh cup in hand, and stood there for a long moment before speaking.

”I want to fight you,” he said.

Ethan looked up, genuinely surprised. ”That’s a strange thing to say to someone right after a two-hour group therapy session about failing civilizations.”

”I mean it seriously,” Malachar said. ”Not out of hostility. I need to know - after everything the trials have shown me, after admitting I built my throne on silence, after refusing to seal a door on a dying world - I need to know if any of that actually changed anything real, or if it’s just words I said under pressure that’ll evaporate the second I go home. A fight would tell me something honest. Fast. In a way conversation can’t.”

Ethan considered that, understanding the impulse even as every part of him resisted it. ”You want proof you’re different now.”

”Yes,” Malachar said. ”And I think, if I’m honest, some part of me still wants to know if I could beat you. Even now. Even after everything.”

Ethan set his cup down, studying the man in front of him - someone who’d unified an entire fractured world through sheer force of will, who’d ground for a decade to reach forty-seven billion combat power, who’d just spent the last several hours learning, painfully, that none of it had actually made him whole.

”No,” Ethan said.

Malachar blinked. ”No, you won’t tell me if you could beat me, or no, you won’t fight?”

”Both, kind of,” Ethan said. ”But mostly the second one. I’m not gonna fight you, Malachar. Not because I don’t think you’re serious. Because I don’t think a fight actually tells you what you’re looking for.”

”Then what does?”

Ethan glanced toward the tea golem, which had already, without needing to be asked, produced a second cup and was rolling it toward Malachar with characteristic brisk efficiency.

”Sit down,” Ethan said. ”Have some tea.”

Malachar stared at the offered cup like it was a trick question. ”You’re answering a request to fight with tea.”

”Yeah,” Ethan said. ”Because here’s the thing - you want a fast, honest answer about whether you’ve actually changed. A fight gives you that about your combat power. It doesn’t give you that about anything else. If you really want to know whether the version of yourself sitting here right now is different from the one who unified a world through silence, the test isn’t whether you can throw a punch differently. It’s whether you can sit still, not fighting, not proving anything, and just exist in a moment that doesn’t require you to be the strongest person in it.”

Malachar stood there for a long moment, visibly wrestling with something, before finally, slowly, sitting down across from Ethan and accepting the cup the golem offered.

”This feels considerably harder than fighting you would’ve been,” he admitted.

”Yeah,” Ethan said. ”That’s kind of the point.”

They sat together in silence for a while, the courtyard settling into its evening quiet around them, the tea golem parked nearby with what looked, unmistakably, like satisfaction at having successfully de-escalated yet another crisis with beverages.

”When was the last time you actually did this?” Ethan asked eventually. ”Sat down. Had a drink. Didn’t have to be Rank One, didn’t have to be the Sovereign, didn’t have anyone watching to see if you’d flinch.”

Malachar considered the question for a long moment, turning the cup slowly in his hands. ”I genuinely don’t know,” he admitted. ”Years, maybe. There was always something. A faction to bring in line. A weakness to eliminate before someone else exploited it. I don’t think I’ve had an unstructured hour in longer than I can remember.”

”That’s not sustainable,” Ethan said quietly. ”Not for you, not for anyone. I don’t care how big your combat power number is. Nobody holds together forever running that hot, that constantly, with nothing left over for the parts of you that just want to sit and drink tea without it meaning anything strategically.”

Malachar’s composure cracked, slightly, something raw showing through the exhaustion he’d clearly been carrying far longer than the past two days alone.

”I don’t know how to stop,” he said quietly. ”That’s the actual truth, Verma. Not that I don’t want to. I genuinely don’t know how. Every hour I’m not working toward stability feels like an hour my world is one step closer to falling apart again.”

Ethan sat with that, recognizing, uncomfortably, a version of the exact fear that had driven every crown offered to him this entire story - the belief that stepping back, even briefly, meant abandoning the people depending on you.

”You’ve got a Regent who came through a corridor and threatened an entire world to protect you,” Ethan said gently. ”You’ve got officers who mobilized a rescue attempt the second word got out you might be lost in the trials. That’s not a world that only functions because you never stop. That’s a world that’s already learned to hold you up, the same way mine learned to hold me up while I was gone. Maybe it’s time you actually let it.”

Malachar didn’t answer right away, staring down at the tea in his hands, something shifting slowly behind his exhausted, unguarded expression.

[NOTICE: The system, monitoring quietly, would like to note something it has observed throughout this entire conversation - a pattern it believes relevant to the fourth trial still to come.]

Ethan glanced up, keeping his voice low so as not to interrupt Malachar’s own private processing. ”What.”

[The archival sky above the excavation site has been pulsing steadily throughout this exchange, in the same rhythm the system first noted during the subject’s conversation with Malachar in the Deep Layer two days ago - responding, subtly, to genuine vulnerability rather than posturing.]

[NOTICE: It has just stabilized into something new - a pattern the system has not seen before, calm and unbroken, holding steady for the first time since the Grinding began.]

[The system believes the Origin Engine may be watching this exact moment, right now, and it suspects - though it cannot yet confirm - that whatever the fourth trial ultimately asks of the candidates, it may have less to do with power, sacrifice, or crisis, and more to do with whether any of them can actually let themselves rest.]

Ethan looked over at Malachar, still sitting quietly with his tea, some of the rigid, unyielding weight finally, visibly easing from his shoulders for the first time since Ethan had met him — and felt, for the first time since the Grinding began, something that resembled genuine, cautious hope about what might actually be waiting for all of them at the end of this.
