Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

”Candidate compromised,” Ethan repeated, the words settling into his chest with a coldness that had nothing to do with the evening air. ”Where is he. Right now.”

[NOTICE: The system’s access to real-time candidate tracking is limited, but based on the last confirmed signal, Malachar Vess has not returned to the surface. He remains within the Deep Layer, in the same general vicinity where the trial environments manifest.]

”Then that’s where I’m going.”

[NOTICE: The system would caution against immediate action without more information. ”Compromised” could indicate several different outcomes, not all of which the subject’s presence would necessarily help resolve.]

”Maybe,” Ethan said, already moving toward the excavation site, ”but I’m not gonna sit up here drinking tea while a guy I had breakfast with two days ago is stuck down there falling apart because of a test none of us signed up for.”

Sundari met him at the stairwell entrance, having clearly heard the exchange through whatever means kept her perpetually, unsettlingly informed of everything happening around her. ”I’m coming with you,” she said. ”I’ve seen what an unstable candidate looks like up close before. It’s not something you should walk into unprepared.”

”You saw that with Arjun?”

”With Arjun, and with one other case I never told you about,” Sundari said, her expression grim. ”Not everyone I’ve watched attempt this held together as well as he did. I’d rather not describe it before we get there. I’d rather you just trust me to know what we’re walking into.”

Ethan nodded, and the two of them descended together, the terminal’s golden light parting to reveal the corridor to the Deep Layer already open, waiting, as though it had anticipated exactly this need.

They found Malachar at the base of the great bronze structure, roughly where they’d left him and Arjun two days earlier - except nothing about him looked the way it had during their last conversation.

He knelt on the shifting archival ground, both hands pressed flat against his temples, his form flickering at the edges in a way that made Ethan’s stomach drop the instant he saw it — not the deliberate, ancient blur of Arjun’s half-dissolved presence, but something violent, unstable, like a signal actively fighting to hold its own shape.

”Malachar,” Ethan said, crouching down carefully, keeping his voice level despite the alarm rising in his chest. ”Can you hear me?”

Malachar’s head snapped up, eyes wild, unfocused, flickering between the composed, cold authority Ethan had met two days ago and something considerably more fractured underneath it.

”They’re all still there,” he said, voice layered strangely, echoing the same distortion the Origin Engine itself carried, but wrong somehow, unstable where the ancient system’s own layering had been controlled. ”Every faction. Every voice I silenced to build unity. They didn’t disappear when I unified them, Verma. I just stopped listening. They’re all still there, and the trial made me hear every single one of them at once.”

Ethan glanced at Sundari, who watched with grim, focused attention, already assessing.

”His trial wasn’t like mine,” Ethan said quietly.

”No,” Sundari confirmed. ”Yours tested what anchors you. His tested what he buried to build the throne he’s sitting on. That’s a considerably crueler question for someone who’s spent a decade convincing himself that burying things was the same as resolving them.”

Ethan turned back to Malachar, kneeling closer, sword set aside, hands empty and open. ”Malachar. Listen to me. I need you to focus on my voice, okay? Not the trial. Not whatever it’s still showing you. Me.”

”You don’t understand,” Malachar said, his form flickering harder, static bleeding faintly off his edges the same way Ethan had seen the Anomaly’s unstable shape carry itself, weeks ago. ”I built stability on silence. Every dissenting voice, every faction that didn’t fall in line - I didn’t convince them, Verma. I just made disagreement too dangerous to voice. The trial didn’t invent anything. It just made me finally hear what I already knew and refused to acknowledge.”

”Okay,” Ethan said, steady, ”so you made mistakes. Big ones. That’s real, and I’m not gonna pretend it isn’t. But falling apart down here doesn’t fix any of that. It just means Instance-9 loses its king to a trial neither of us asked for, on top of whatever damage the silence already caused.”

Malachar’s flickering slowed, fractionally, something in Ethan’s blunt honesty apparently cutting through the chaos more effectively than gentleness would have.

”Halvorsen came to Earth,” Ethan continued. ”She threatened me, honestly. Told me if you didn’t come back whole, my world would answer for it. But underneath that threat, Malachar, she was terrified for you. Not for the throne. For you. That’s not nothing. That’s not something you silenced out of her, either - she came to fight for you anyway.”

Malachar’s flickering eased further, his breathing slowing, some fragile measure of coherence returning to his fractured expression.

”I don’t know how to rule without the silence,” he admitted, voice quieter now, more his own. ”I don’t know what unity looks like if I actually let people disagree with me.”

”Neither do I, honestly,” Ethan said. ”I’ve never ruled anything. I’ve just tried to build a place where people trust me enough to tell me when I’m wrong, and then actually listened when they did. That’s not the same scale as what you’re carrying. But maybe it’s the same idea.”

The archival sky above them shifted, the vast, scrolling text slowing, condensing, and the layered voice of the Origin Engine spoke once more, patient and unhurried as ever.

[SECOND TRIAL RESULT - MALACHAR VESS: CONDITION STABILIZING.]

[NOTICE: EXTERNAL INTERVENTION NOTED. THIS OUTCOME WILL BE LOGGED ACCORDINGLY.]

Malachar’s form steadied fully, the violent flickering finally settling into something whole, if visibly shaken, and he looked up at Ethan with an expression stripped of every ounce of the cold, unyielding authority he’d carried when they first met.

”You didn’t have to come down here,” he said quietly.

”No,” Ethan agreed. ”I wanted to.”

They surfaced together an hour later, Malachar walking on his own but visibly still processing the weight of what the trial had shown him, Sundari watching him with careful, professional attentiveness the entire way up.

Regent Halvorsen was waiting in the courtyard, and the moment she saw him - whole, exhausted, but unmistakably himself - something in her severe composure cracked entirely, relief flooding through in a way that made her look, for the first time since Ethan had met her, genuinely human rather than purely political.

”My king,” she said, voice unsteady.

”Regent,” Malachar said, and then, quieter, something that sounded almost like an apology, ”I think we need to talk. About a great many things. When I’m ready.”

Halvorsen nodded slowly, understanding, apparently, that whatever had happened down there had changed something fundamental, and choosing, for now, not to push for more than he could give.

Ethan watched the reunion from a short distance, exhaustion settling over him in a wave now that the immediate crisis had passed, and found Kaia at his side, her expression thoughtful.

”That’s twice now,” she said. ”You could’ve just let the trial run its course. Both times, you went out of your way to intervene.”

”Yeah, well,” Ethan said, ”turns out I’m bad at minding my own business, even in a multiversal tournament that’s technically not supposed to involve helping other candidates.”

[NOTICE: The system would like to note, having monitored the entire exchange, that the Origin Engine’s log explicitly flagged the intervention rather than penalizing it. It suspects this may be relevant to understanding what the Grinding is actually measuring, beyond the individual trials themselves.]

Ethan glanced up, curious despite his exhaustion. ”Meaning what?”

[NOTICE: The system believes, though it cannot yet confirm, that the trials may not be purely individual assessments. It suspects the Grinding may also be measuring how candidates behave toward one another - whether power, once achieved, breeds isolation or connection.]

[If that theory is correct, the system would like to raise one final observation before the evening fully settles.]

[The countdown to the third trial has just updated. It is no longer eighteen hours away.]

[It is now scheduled to begin in six.]

[NOTICE: And for the first time since the Grinding began, all four registered candidates - the subject, Malachar Vess, the Instance 12-Kesh successor, and Sundari - have been flagged to enter the third trial simultaneously, together, in the same constructed environment.]
