Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

”The Deep Layer,” Ethan repeated slowly. ”As in - the actual home base of the thing that built the terminal, the guardians, the whole buried city under my courtyard.”

”As in exactly that,” Kaia said. ”Our Framework doesn’t send anyone there. Can’t, actually - the access requirements are locked behind clearance levels that don’t exist for ordinary Instances. The last confirmed signal from Arjun came from inside it, years ago, and then it went quiet. Not deleted. Not terminated. Just - quiet. The kind of quiet that could mean anything.”

Ethan felt the weight of that settle uncomfortably alongside everything else the day had already handed him - a severed corridor, a bowing hunter, Kael’s unexpected return, and now this. He was midway through opening his mouth to ask exactly how someone might get access to a place an entire governing Framework couldn’t reach, when Priya’s voice cut across the courtyard, sharp and immediate in a way that made every trained reflex in the vicinity go on alert.

”We’ve got a visitor at the north wall,” she called out. ”Solo. No weapons drawn, but she’s not asking for permission to approach -she’s already climbing over.”

Ethan turned, half-expecting another envoy, another delegation, another piece of this steadily expanding puzzle showing up uninvited.

Instead, dropping neatly from the top of the north wall into the courtyard with the same silent precision she’d once used to infiltrate his kitchen at night, was Ren.

She landed in a low crouch, straightened slowly, hands visibly empty, and looked directly at Ethan across the courtyard with an expression that had none of the professional detachment she’d carried the last time they’d stood this close.

”I apologize for the entrance,” she said, voice steady but quieter than Ethan remembered. ”I did not think a formal approach would get me past your perimeter guards quickly enough. I need to speak with you.”

Priya had already crossed half the distance between them, hand on her weapon, and Kael’s hand had drifted to the Ashcrown Blade’s hilt out of pure reflex, though he hadn’t drawn it.

”Stand down,” Ethan said, before anyone could escalate further. ”She’s not here to fight. If she wanted a fight, she’d have picked a night I was actually asleep.”

Ren’s mouth twitched at that, something close to a rueful smile. ”That would have gone poorly for me the first time. I’ve learned my lesson.”

”Yeah, well,” Ethan said, walking toward her, waving the guards back down, ”learning curves around here tend to be steep.”

They sat at the same low table Kaia’s delegation had recently vacated, Ren settling stiffly into a seat like she wasn’t entirely sure she was allowed to, the tea golem rolling up with characteristic promptness despite having no prior data on whether an infamous former assassin took sugar in her tea.

”I’ve spent the past several weeks doing what I do best,” Ren said, once the golem had retreated, ”which is watching. Gathering information. I watched the leaderboard break. I watched the sky crack open. I watched you talk fourteen thousand of the world’s strongest hunters into going home over a cup of tea, and I watched you erase a fleet of celestial ships with what everyone’s now calling a sigh.”

”It’s not my favorite nickname for it, but sure,” Ethan said.

”I came here originally to kill you,” Ren continued, matter-of-fact, no attempt to soften it. ”That contract is long since void - nobody left willing to pay for it, and nobody foolish enough to try collecting after what happened to my team. But I kept watching, because I needed to understand what I’d actually failed to kill. And somewhere in the last few weeks, watching stopped being about understanding a threat and started being about understanding something I didn’t have a category for anymore.”

Ethan waited, letting her get to the point in her own time.

”The Kuroyuki Order doesn’t exist anymore,” Ren said finally. ”Not really. What’s left of it scattered after the failed contract, after everyone who mattered saw exactly how badly that mission went. I have nowhere left that particularly wants me, and - for the first time in longer than I care to admit - nowhere I particularly want to be, either.”

She met his eyes directly. ”I’d like to stay here. Not as an assassin. I understand if that history makes trust difficult. But I’ve watched how you run this place, and it’s the first structure I’ve encountered in years that doesn’t feel like it’s waiting to use the people inside it for something.”

Ethan glanced at Suresh, who’d drifted over during the conversation with his ever-present clipboard, expression carefully neutral in the way it always was when he was deliberately withholding judgment until Ethan made the call.

”You tried to kill me in my sleep,” Ethan said, not unkindly, just stating the fact plainly.

”I did,” Ren agreed. ”And your passive defenses knocked out my entire squad without you so much as waking up, which was, in retrospect, the single most humiliating professional failure of my career. I’ve had a lot of time to sit with that.”

Ethan almost laughed at the flat, dry honesty of it. ”Yeah, okay. That tracks with everything else about this place.”

He considered her for a long moment - the careful stillness in her posture, the genuine weight behind her request, the fact that she’d walked in through the front, more or less, rather than trying to sneak back the way she’d come the first time.

”Here’s the deal,” Ethan said finally. ”You stay. But Suresh runs onboarding for literally everyone who moves in here, no exceptions, including people who used to have contracts on my life. You’ll fill out the same forms everyone else fills out. You’ll follow the same house rules everyone else follows. And if you ever so much as look at anyone here funny, you’re gone. Not killed. Just gone. I’ve got enough on my plate without adding ’betrayed by my own sanctuary’ to the list.”

Ren blinked, clearly having braced for something more dramatic. ”That’s... reasonable. More reasonable than I expected.”

”Yeah, well,” Ethan said, standing up, ”turns out most of my rules are just common sense with extra steps.”

Suresh, already flipping to a fresh page on his clipboard with the particular brisk efficiency of a man who took paperwork very seriously regardless of the applicant’s prior career, gestured for Ren to follow him.

”Full name, prior residence, emergency contact if applicable, and any known allergies,” Suresh said, already walking. ”We’ll get you settled in the east wing. It’s quieter there. Less foot traffic.”

Ren rose to follow him, pausing once to glance back at Ethan. ”Thank you,” she said, simply, without embellishment.

”Don’t thank me yet,” Ethan said. ”Wait till you’ve filled out the forms. Suresh’s paperwork is genuinely more intense than most of the fights I’ve been in.”

Later that evening, with the courtyard finally quiet and the day’s steady stream of new arrivals settled into whatever corner of the Citadel had space for them, Ethan sat alone on the low wall overlooking the sunken excavation site, staring down at the faint gold glow still visible through the covered stairwell entrance.

[NOTICE: The system would like to return to the matter it set aside earlier today, given that the immediate distractions have finally, if temporarily, resolved.]

Ethan didn’t need to ask which matter. ”The Deep Layer.”

[Correct. The system has spent the intervening hours cross-referencing everything Kaia disclosed against its own archive access, and it has found one additional detail it believes changes the shape of the problem considerably.]

”Go on.”

[The Deep Layer is not merely restricted. According to the fragments the system can access, it is not technically part of any Instance’s mapped reality at all - it exists in what the terminal’s own archive describes, in language the system struggles to translate cleanly, as ”the space between save files.” A location that only becomes reachable through direct, authorized interaction with the Origin Engine itself.]

Ethan felt the weight of that settle slowly. ”So even if I wanted to go looking for him - for Arjun - there’s no door. Not like the one that opened this week.”

[Not currently, no. The system believes reaching the Deep Layer would require something considerably more significant than synchronizing with a buried terminal. It suspects - though it cannot yet confirm - that it would require the subject to actually accept some meaningful portion of the authority the Origin Engine has been trying to hand him since this entire ordeal began.]

Ethan let out a long, slow breath, watching the faint golden glow pulse steadily from beneath the excavation cover, patient as ever.

”So the only way to find out if he’s really still out there,” he said quietly, ”is to start taking the exact kind of responsibility I’ve spent this entire story refusing to take.”

[NOTICE: The system does not have a comfortable answer to offer. It can only confirm that this appears, at present, to be the shape of the choice in front of the subject.]

[The system would like to add one final observation before letting the evening settle. It has noticed, over the course of today alone, that the subject’s household has grown by three permanent residents - Kael, Ren, and, pending further negotiation, quite possibly Devan Rao as well, judging by how reluctant he seemed to leave at the end of the delegation’s visit.]

[The system considers this relevant, because it suspects that whatever the subject eventually decides about the Deep Layer, he will not be deciding it alone, and he will not be the only one whose life changes because of it.]
