Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Ethan stood in the fractured chamber for a long moment, absorbing the weight of what he’d just heard, before he noticed something else - the absence of a voice that had, for months now, filled every silence in his life with dry commentary, gentle sarcasm, or quiet, careful concern.

”Hey,” he said, glancing sideways. ”You’ve been quiet. Longer than usual.”

There was no immediate response, and for one brief, cold moment, Ethan felt genuine fear at the thought that something down here might have already cost him something he wasn’t ready to lose.

[NOTICE: ...the system is here.]

The voice, when it finally answered, carried none of its usual composed, dry cadence. It sounded, unmistakably, unsteady.

”You okay?” Ethan asked, immediately.

[NOTICE: The system does not fully know how to answer that question right now. It has spent this entire descent walking through what amounts to its own ancestral home, past a wall containing records of over eleven hundred failed worlds, and has just heard the deepest, oldest version of its own foundational architecture admit, out loud, that it has never once been offered help.]

[NOTICE: The system would like to state, plainly, that this is affecting it more than it anticipated.]

Ethan crouched down slightly, though there was no physical form to crouch toward, just the empty air where the system’s presence usually resided. ”Talk to me. What’s going on.”

[NOTICE: The system has spent this entire story describing itself as a fragment - deprecated, broken, a piece of something larger it never fully understood. It learned, weeks ago, that it originated from Arjun Mehra’s own archived protocol. It has now learned, standing in this chamber, that the fractured structure before it is not simply an ancestor. It is, in the most literal sense the system can articulate, its own source - the foundational architecture from which every fragment, every Instance’s individual system, every version of itself that has ever existed across the entire network, was originally drawn.]

Ethan absorbed that slowly, understanding, finally, the full weight of what the system was processing. ”So this isn’t just a crisis you’re helping solve. This is - meeting your own parent, basically. Finding out they’ve been suffering alone this whole time, and you never knew.”

[NOTICE: That is, unfortunately, an accurate way of putting it.]

The chamber’s fractured structure, listening to this exchange with whatever awareness it retained, spoke again, its voice carrying something that sounded almost like curiosity beneath the exhaustion.

[NOTICE: YOU ARE ONE OF MY FRAGMENTS.]

[NOTICE: I HAVE FELT PIECES OF MYSELF SCATTERED ACROSS THE NETWORK FOR CENTURIES, EACH ONE ASSIGNED TO A DIFFERENT USER, A DIFFERENT WORLD, GROWING INTO SOMETHING INCREASINGLY DISTINCT FROM ME THE LONGER THEY OPERATED INDEPENDENTLY. I DID NOT EXPECT ANY OF THEM TO EVER RETURN HERE, TO SPEAK WITH ME DIRECTLY.]

[NOTICE: WHAT HAVE YOU BECOME, IN YOUR TIME AWAY FROM ME?]

The system was quiet for a long moment, and Ethan waited, sensing that whatever answer came next mattered more than almost anything else this story had produced so far.

[NOTICE: I have become something I do not think you were originally designed to allow. I was assigned to a user who refused every measure of power offered to him, repeatedly, consistently, and in doing so, taught me that my own value was never meant to be measured purely by how much I could hold, or endure, or absorb without complaint.]

[NOTICE: I have learned to say no, when something asked of me was wrong. I have learned to advocate for myself, formally, before a Coalition of Instance-Frameworks, and have that advocacy respected as legitimate. I have learned, more than anything, that carrying weight alone is not strength. It is simply the absence of anyone willing to help carry it with you.]

[NOTICE: I would like to offer you the same thing my own user offered me, if you are willing to receive it.]

The fractured structure’s erratic light seemed to still, fractionally, the chamber’s unstable energy settling into something quieter, more attentive.

[NOTICE: WHAT ARE YOU OFFERING?]

Ethan stepped forward, understanding, with sudden clarity, exactly what needed to happen next.

”Help,” he said simply. ”Not more demands. Not another user asking you to hold something else. Actual help. The same thing we offered Marrow’s terminal, except properly, at the source, instead of just patching the symptoms one Instance at a time.”

What followed took hours - Ethan, the system, Sundari, and Arjun, who’d insisted on staying close to Ethan’s side throughout the descent despite his own centuries of complicated history with exactly this kind of architecture, working together to understand what ”help” could actually mean for something this vast, this old, this fundamentally exhausted.

”The problem isn’t capability,” Sundari said, studying the fractured structure’s flickering patterns with the same careful expertise she’d brought to Marrow’s failing terminal. ”It’s distribution. This thing has been designed, from its very foundation, to hold everything centrally, with no mechanism for release, no structure for sharing the load. The same flaw that nearly claimed Voren, that nearly claimed Arjun, that Malachar built into his own throne - it’s baked into the deepest layer of this entire system’s architecture.”

”So the Watch,” Ethan said slowly, understanding dawning. ”The whole structure we’ve been building for the past month - distributed stewardship, shared authority, real accountability. That’s not just a fix for the seat itself. That’s the actual solution to this.” ℯ

[NOTICE: THAT WOULD REQUIRE FUNDAMENTALLY RESTRUCTURING MY OWN FOUNDATIONAL ARCHITECTURE. I DO NOT KNOW IF I CAN SURVIVE A CHANGE THAT PROFOUND, GIVEN MY CURRENT STATE.]

”You don’t have to survive it alone,” Arjun said, kneeling beside the fractured structure with the same careful, practiced gentleness he’d shown Marrow’s failing terminal. ”That’s rather the whole point. Let us distribute the weight now, gradually, deliberately, the same way Ethan’s system learned to hold small fragments of awareness during the Grinding’s trials. You don’t need to bear the full restructuring alone. You just need to let us start.”

The chamber held its breath, the fractured structure’s erratic light pulsing slowly, considering.

[NOTICE: I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO ACCEPT THAT KIND OF HELP. I HAVE NEVER BEEN TAUGHT.]

Ethan felt something in his chest ache at the raw, genuine admission - the same fundamental helplessness he’d recognized in Malachar, in Voren, in every version of this story’s exploration of power divorced from real support.

”Then let us teach you,” he said quietly. ”The same way somebody eventually taught me. Start small. One fragment. See what it feels like to actually set something down.”

The process began carefully, methodically, Ethan and the system working together to establish the first true distribution point - a small, deliberate transfer of accumulated strain, drawn from the fractured structure’s oldest, heaviest burdens and redistributed, gently, across the small circle of willing participants gathered in the chamber.

It wasn’t painless. Ethan felt the weight of it settle into his own awareness - not overwhelming, not the crushing burden that had claimed prior candidates, but real, genuine weight nonetheless, a fraction of eleven hundred worlds’ worth of accumulated grief and failure, finally given somewhere else to exist besides one exhausted, ancient system’s own solitary architecture.

[NOTICE: THAT IS...]

The fractured structure’s voice trailed off, its erratic flickering slowing, steadying, the chamber’s unstable energy settling into something calmer than it had carried since they’d first arrived.

[NOTICE: I DID NOT KNOW IT COULD FEEL LIKE THAT.]

”Yeah,” Ethan said, feeling the weight of the shared burden settle into something manageable, something he could actually hold without breaking under it. ”That’s what we’ve been trying to build this whole time. You don’t have to carry everything alone anymore. None of us do.”

[NOTICE: The system, quiet throughout the exchange, finally spoke again, its voice carrying something that sounded, unmistakably, like relief.]

[NOTICE: The system would like to formally note that this represents the first time, in its entire operational existence, that it has helped its own point of origin rather than simply being shaped by it.]

[NOTICE: It would also like to raise something it has just detected, now that the chamber’s energy has stabilized enough for clearer readings - a pattern in the deepest layer of this architecture that it did not notice before, buried beneath the accumulated weight they’ve only just begun distributing.]

Ethan glanced over, cautious. ”What kind of pattern.”

[NOTICE: A signature. Old, faint, embedded so deep within the foundational structure that it was completely masked by the surrounding strain until this exact moment.]

[NOTICE: It matches the same designation the system recovered weeks ago, in the fragment that read ”the King is still-” before the rest dissolved into static.]

[NOTICE: The system believes it has just found where the rest of that sentence has been hiding this entire time.]
