Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The chaos took nearly ten minutes to settle into something resembling order, and even then, ”order” meant something closer to controlled shouting rather than actual calm.

Delegates were on their feet across the courtyard, translators struggling to keep pace with overlapping arguments in a dozen languages, the presiding representative banging some kind of ceremonial gavel that nobody seemed to be paying attention to. Ethan sat through all of it, watching the sky’s scrolling gold-violet text hold perfectly, patiently still, waiting, the same way it had waited centuries for someone to answer the question it had never quite managed to ask honestly before.

It was Commander Vahn, of all people, who finally got the room’s attention, standing on her chair and shouting loud enough to cut through the noise.

”Enough,” she said. ”Enough! We are not going to solve this by shouting over each other. If the Engine wants an answer, it deserves one that’s actually been thought through, not one screamed across a courtyard by whoever’s loudest.”

The noise died down, gradually, into something more manageable, and the presiding representative took the opportunity to reassert some control.

”The Coalition will hear formal positions,” he said. ”One representative from each major faction, stating their Instance’s stance. We do not have unlimited time - the Origin Engine has not indicated how long it intends to wait for a response.”

The positions came fast, and predictably fractured.

The delegation from Instance 12-Kesh - Voren’s own world, whose two-century-old sacrifice had bought them stability at the cost of their successor’s selfhood - argued fiercely for preserving the seat, their reasoning grounded in genuine, understandable fear. ”You are asking us to gamble our entire Instance’s stability on the hope that decentralized trust works everywhere the way it apparently works in one small sanctuary,” their envoy said, voice tight. ”We do not have the luxury of that gamble. Our stability came at a real cost, and abandoning the structure that provided it, however imperfect, risks undoing two hundred years of hard-won peace.”

Instance-9’s contingent, notably, argued the opposite, their earlier hostility toward the Grinding transformed entirely by what they’d witnessed their own king go through. ”We watched our Sovereign nearly lose himself trying to be the single point of authority his world depended on,” Halvorsen said, standing to speak on Malachar’s behalf, though he sat beside her rather than objecting. ”We are not eager to see that structure replicated at a scale involving every Instance across the network. If anything, our recent experience argues strongly against it.”

Kaia’s own Threshold Accord representative spoke next, careful and measured. ”Our world has spent four generations organizing itself around the hope of finding Arjun Mehra’s successor. We built an entire cultural identity around the assumption that the seat mattered, that someone accepting it would matter. If the Engine dissolves that structure entirely, what does that mean for worlds like ours, who’ve shaped themselves around waiting for exactly this moment?”

Arjun, listening quietly beside Ethan through all of it, finally spoke, his layered voice cutting through the debate with quiet, unforced authority.

”May I offer something,” he said, and the courtyard, out of some combination of reverence and curiosity, fell silent to let him.

”I understand the fear,” he said. ”Genuinely. I lived inside that fear for years before I ever refused the seat - the fear that without a single, strong authority holding everything together, it would all simply fall apart. I want to tell you what I’ve actually learned, in the centuries since, watching from wherever I’ve drifted, half-present, half-gone.”

He paused, gathering himself.

”Centralized authority doesn’t actually prevent collapse. It just delays it, and concentrates the cost of that collapse into a single catastrophic failure point instead of distributing the risk. Instance 3-Orrin - the world whose unresolvable user was terminated by their own Framework - didn’t stabilize after that termination. Their records show the opposite. Removing the one person capable of holding real power, and replacing him with nothing, left that Instance considerably worse off than either extreme would have. What actually works, based on everything I’ve watched unfold this past week, isn’t the presence or absence of a single seat. It’s whether power, wherever it exists, remains answerable to the people it affects.”

He looked directly at Ethan.

”This young man didn’t refuse the seat because he believes power is inherently dangerous. He refused it because he understood, instinctively, something it took me years of suffering to learn properly. Power that isn’t answerable to anyone eventually stops serving anyone but itself, regardless of how good the person holding it started out being. The question isn’t whether the seat should exist. It’s whether any single point of authority - one seat, one Coalition, one Framework - should ever hold power without being genuinely, structurally accountable to the people it governs.”

The courtyard sat with that for a long moment, the weight of it settling considerably more heavily than any of the earlier, more heated arguments had managed.

It was Ethan, finally, who stood, feeling the full weight of an entire multiverse’s attention settle on him as he did.

”I don’t think I’m the right person to answer whether the seat should exist,” he said. ”I’ve spent this whole process saying no to power, and I think that’s genuinely the right instinct for me. But I don’t think my instinct should get to decide the fate of thousands of worlds I’ve never even visited. That’s exactly the kind of centralized authority everyone in this courtyard’s been arguing against for the last twenty minutes.”

Murmurs of surprised agreement moved through the crowd.

”Here’s what I’d actually propose,” Ethan continued. ”Don’t dissolve the seat entirely, and don’t preserve it exactly the way it’s always existed either. Change what it actually does. Instead of one person holding absolute, centralized authority over every Instance, what if the seat became something closer to what my own sanctuary already runs on - a structure that exists to support Instances that need it, answerable to a council representing every world that wants a voice, rather than answerable to nobody but itself?”

Arjun’s blurred expression shifted into something considering, weighing the proposal carefully.

”You’re suggesting the seat become a service, rather than a throne,” he said slowly.

”Yeah,” Ethan said. ”Exactly that. Something that helps stabilize failing worlds - like Instance 52-Thorne, like the choice we made in the third trial - without requiring the person holding it to surrender who they are to hold it. Distributed authority. Real accountability. Whoever sits in that seat answers to a genuine council, the same way I answer to Suresh, to Priya, to everyone in my own sanctuary who’s earned the right to tell me no.”

The courtyard erupted into fresh debate at that, but this time it carried a different energy - less panic, more genuine consideration, delegates turning to each other with actual questions instead of accusations.

The archival sky above finally rippled, the Origin Engine’s patient voice returning after its long, unbroken silence.

[NOTICE: THAT IS A PROPOSAL I HAVE NEVER CONSIDERED, IN ALL MY EXISTENCE.]

[NOTICE: I REQUIRE TIME TO PROPERLY EVALUATE ITS VIABILITY ACROSS EVERY REGISTERED INSTANCE.]

[NOTICE: THE FINAL TRIAL WILL REMAIN OPEN UNTIL THIS EVALUATION CONCLUDES.]

Ethan let out a slow breath, feeling the exhaustion of the past hour finally catch up with him, and glanced sideways at Arjun, who was watching him with something that looked, unmistakably, like quiet, proud recognition.

”You just proposed rebuilding an entire multiversal governing system,” Arjun said quietly, ”in the middle of a courtyard argument.”

”Yeah,” Ethan admitted. ”Wasn’t really planning that when I woke up this morning.”

[NOTICE: The system would like to interject, having spent the last several minutes cross-referencing the Origin Engine’s evaluation activity against every accessible archive channel.]

Ethan glanced over, bracing himself. ”What.”

[NOTICE: The evaluation the Origin Engine just referenced is not a simple administrative review. The system can confirm it has just initiated direct contact with every registered Instance-Framework across the entire network - not the Coalition, not delegates, but the underlying systems themselves, the same category of architecture the system itself belongs to.]

[NOTICE: It is asking every single Framework in existence the exact same question it just asked this courtyard.]

[Whether they would accept being answerable to something new.]
