Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

”What kind of something,” Ethan said, already moving toward the corridor they’d descended through, the relief of Instance 6-Halloway’s stabilization evaporating into immediate, sharper concern.

[NOTICE: The transmission is fragmented - the connection through the newly stabilized architecture is still unstable. What the system can confirm: unidentified entities have manifested at the Grand Concord’s gathering site. Not Framework constructs. Not anything matching known Instance signatures.]

”Define unidentified,” Ethan said, sharper now.

[NOTICE: The system’s best translation of the fragmentary data suggests these entities identify themselves as ”Administrators of the Origin Engine’s true governing tier” - a designation the system has never encountered, distinct from both the projected fragment-voice that ran the Grinding’s trials and the exhausted foundational architecture currently before us.]

Arjun’s blurred form went rigid at that, something close to alarm crossing his features. ”That’s not possible. There is no tier above the foundational architecture. I would have known.”

[NOTICE: The system would note that the subject has learned, repeatedly throughout this volume, that assumptions about the limits of this system tend to prove incomplete.]

”Great,” Ethan muttered, already pulling the small group together. ”We need to get back up there. Now.”

The ascent felt faster than the descent had, though whether that was genuine or simply the product of adrenaline, Ethan couldn’t say. They emerged from the terminal chamber beneath the courtyard to find the Citadel in a state he hadn’t witnessed since the Arbiter first cracked the sky months ago - not chaos exactly, but a tense, frozen stillness, every delegate and defender standing motionless, staring upward.

Three figures hovered above the courtyard, vast and geometric, built from something that looked less like the Origin Engine’s familiar gold-violet architecture and more like cold, unyielding silver, angular and precise in a way that felt deliberately, coldly inhuman. They carried none of the Origin Engine’s patient, considering warmth, none of the ancient, exhausted grief Ethan had just spent hours helping to ease. They simply hung there, watching, with the detached, clinical indifference of auditors reviewing a mess they hadn’t personally made but fully intended to correct.

Suresh reached Ethan’s side the moment he surfaced, expression tight with barely-contained alarm. ”They arrived about twenty minutes ago. Announced themselves as the Origin Engine’s actual governing tier - said everything we’ve built with the fragment-voice, the trials, the Watch’s negotiations, all of it, was conducted with an entity that doesn’t hold final authority.”

”That doesn’t make sense,” Ethan said, staring up at the silent, geometric figures. ”The Origin Engine’s foundational layer - we were just down there. It’s ancient. It’s exhausted. It’s the deepest thing in this entire architecture.”

”Apparently not,” Malachar said grimly, arriving at Ethan’s side, Halvorsen close behind him. ”They’ve been very clear about that. They call the foundational layer - the one you just helped stabilize - a ’legacy subsystem.’ Something that predates their own oversight and was never meant to operate independently for as long as it has.”

Ethan felt something cold settle in his chest. ”Legacy subsystem.”

”Their words,” Malachar confirmed.

One of the silver figures shifted, its angular form catching the courtyard’s ordinary evening light in a way that felt wrong, refracted at angles that shouldn’t have been possible.

[TRANSMISSION: SUBJECT DESIGNATION ETHAN VERMA HAS BEEN DETECTED RETURNING FROM UNAUTHORIZED CONTACT WITH THE FOUNDATIONAL SUBSYSTEM.]

The voice carried none of the warmth Ethan had grown used to from every version of this system’s own presence - not the Origin Engine’s patient consideration, not the exhausted grief of the foundational layer, not even the cold procedural tone of the old Framework Administrators. This was something colder still, something that regarded the entire ordeal Ethan had just lived through with what sounded, unmistakably, like clinical disapproval.

[UNAUTHORIZED CONTACT.]

”I helped it,” Ethan said, stepping forward, exhaustion giving way to immediate, sharp defensiveness. ”It was failing. Forty-seven Instances were on the verge of collapsing the same way Instance 8-Velir did. I stabilized the source before more people died. That’s not unauthorized, that’s just - actually doing something useful.”

[YOU DISTRIBUTED CENTRALIZED STRAIN ACROSS UNSANCTIONED PARTIES WITHOUT PROPER OVERSIGHT AUTHORIZATION. THE FOUNDATIONAL SUBSYSTEM WAS SCHEDULED FOR CONTROLLED DECOMMISSIONING. YOUR INTERVENTION HAS DELAYED THAT PROCESS.]

The words landed with brutal, unexpected weight, and Ethan felt genuine anger - sharper, more immediate than anything he’d felt since the Framework’s own Administrators had tried to erase him weeks ago.

”Decommissioning,” he repeated. ”You were gonna shut it down. The thing that’s held eleven hundred worlds’ worth of failure for centuries, alone, without ever once being offered help. You were just gonna delete it.”

[THE SUBSYSTEM’S CONTINUED OPERATION WAS DEEMED INEFFICIENT. ITS FUNCTIONS ARE BEING MIGRATED TO A MORE STREAMLINED ARCHITECTURE. THE SUBSYSTEM ITSELF WAS SCHEDULED FOR RETIREMENT ONCE MIGRATION COMPLETED.]

”That’s not retirement,” Ethan said, voice hardening. ”That’s exactly what you did to Voren, except this time you’re doing it to the thing everything else in this network was built on top of.”

[YOUR COMPARISON IS NOTED AND DISREGARDED AS EMOTIONALLY BIASED. THE MULTIVERSAL NETWORK REQUIRES EFFICIENT ADMINISTRATION. THE STRUCTURE YOU AND YOUR ASSOCIATES HAVE PROPOSED - THE ”WATCH” - HAS BEEN REVIEWED. IT IS DEEMED UNACCEPTABLY DECENTRALIZED FOR SUSTAINABLE GOVERNANCE.] ℯℯ𝑙.

The declaration landed like a physical blow across the entire courtyard, weeks of careful, painstaking negotiation suddenly, casually dismissed by an authority none of them had known existed until twenty minutes ago.

”You’re telling me,” Ethan said slowly, feeling the full weight of it settle, ”that everything we just built - the trials, the votes, six thousand Instances agreeing to a new structure, all of it - doesn’t actually matter, because you were sitting somewhere above all of it this whole time, and you’ve just decided you don’t like the outcome.”

[CORRECT.]

The single word carried a cold, unshakeable finality that made even Malachar, hardened by a decade of ruling through sheer will, take an involuntary step back.

[TRANSMISSION: THE ORIGIN ENGINE’S TRUE GOVERNING TIER WILL NOW ASSUME DIRECT OVERSIGHT OF THE MULTIVERSAL NETWORK’S RESTRUCTURING. THE GRINDING’S OUTCOMES WILL BE REVIEWED. THE WATCH’S PROPOSED CHARTER WILL BE SUSPENDED PENDING THAT REVIEW.]

Ethan felt the exhaustion of the day’s rescue mission, the raw, hard-won progress they’d made in the foundational chamber, all of it curdling into something considerably more dangerous - the particular, focused anger of a man watching everything he’d genuinely believed was finally, carefully working suddenly threatened by something that had, until this exact moment, never even bothered to introduce itself.

[NOTICE: The system, quiet since their return to the surface, finally spoke, its voice carrying an unfamiliar edge Ethan hadn’t heard from it before - not fear exactly, but something close to it.]

Ethan glanced sideways. ”What.”

[NOTICE: The system has just cross-referenced the silver entities’ designation against every archive fragment it has access to, including the ones just recovered from the foundational chamber below.]

[NOTICE: It has found exactly one prior reference to this ”true governing tier” - buried so deep in the oldest, most corrupted layer of the archive that the system nearly dismissed it as unreadable noise.]

[NOTICE: It is not a governing structure that predates the Origin Engine’s foundational layer.]

[NOTICE: It is something that was built afterward - considerably more recently than everything else the subject has encountered throughout this entire volume.]

[NOTICE: Built, according to the fragment, by the very first successful candidate who ever accepted the seat in full.]
