Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

”S.,” Ethan said again, staring at nothing in particular, the letter sitting oddly heavy in the quiet morning air. ”That’s the same S. from the room downstairs. The friend. The one who ran things for Arjun.”

[NOTICE: The system would like to caution against assuming a direct connection too quickly. ”S.” is not a unique identifier. It is a single initial, and the archive redaction pattern the system found on Instance 44-Bryn’s record does not automatically confirm this is the same individual referenced in Arjun’s carved house rules.]

”But it’s possible.”

[It is possible. The system would put the likelihood at meaningfully above coincidence, given the redaction style matches and the timeline is not inconsistent - Instance 44-Bryn’s case occurred roughly eight years ago, and Arjun’s own disappearance, based on everything gathered so far, happened considerably earlier than that. If this is the same person, it would mean whoever managed Arjun’s logistics back on his own world eventually ended up on a completely different Instance, going through the exact same unresolvable-user crisis themselves.]

Kaia had gone very still across the table, watching the exchange with an expression Ethan couldn’t quite read.

”You know something,” he said, turning to her directly.

”I don’t,” she said, quickly enough that it almost sounded defensive, before she caught herself and softened it. ”I genuinely don’t, Ethan. But I think if this thread is real, it’s bigger than anything my own Framework has briefed me on, and I think that’s exactly the kind of gap the Threshold Accord would rather I not go digging into without approval.”

”Great,” Ethan muttered. ”So even the polite Framework’s got things it’s not telling me.”

”Every Framework has things it’s not telling anyone,” Kaia said, not unkindly. ”That’s kind of the whole shape of this entire situation, isn’t it.”

Before Ethan could press further, the courtyard’s relative calm broke apart entirely — not from a threat this time, but from the considerably more mundane chaos of four separate groups of unfamiliar people arriving at the Citadel’s gates within the span of about twenty minutes, each apparently under the impression that today was, for reasons nobody had actually confirmed with Ethan, some kind of open house.

”I don’t understand,” Ethan said, twenty minutes later, standing at the gate watching Suresh manage what had become, without anyone’s explicit permission, a full diplomatic reception line. ”Who told these people they could just show up?”

”Nobody told them anything,” Suresh said, flipping through a clipboard that had, sometime in the last hour, developed an entirely new section labeled INTER-INSTANCE VISITOR LOG. ”Word travels. Kaia’s delegation went home and reported a successful exchange. The Threshold Accord’s own records got flagged by at least two other Instance-Frameworks monitoring the same transit architecture. Apparently ’the Citadel where the Inheritor lives’ is now a known landmark across at least three separate worlds, and everyone with a diplomatic mandate wants to be the first to formally establish contact.”

Ethan looked out at the gathered groups - a stiff, formally dressed pair claiming to represent something called the Meridian Concord; a lone, heavily armored figure who introduced himself only as an ”observer” from an Instance nobody had heard of; and, somehow already deep in conversation with Kael near the training grounds, a cheerful trio who’d apparently crossed through an entirely different, unrelated corridor that had opened somewhere near the district’s old power station two days ago and nobody had reported yet.

”There’s a second corridor,” Ethan said, staring at the trio. ”Nobody told me there was a second corridor.”

[NOTICE: The system was unaware of this as well. It has just cross-referenced the new arrivals’ transit signature and can confirm they did not come through the terminal beneath the courtyard. Their point of origin appears to be an entirely separate breach point, one the system has no record of monitoring.]

”So my basement isn’t the only door,” Ethan said slowly. ”There’s other ones. Just - around. Openable by whoever finds them first.”

[That does appear to be the case, yes. The system suspects that once the subject synchronized with the terminal, it did not simply wake up one buried city. It may have destabilized dormant transit architecture across the entire planet, or possibly further.]

Ethan pressed both hands over his face. ”So this isn’t a diplomatic exchange anymore. This is just - open borders. My apartment building has open borders now.”

”That’s roughly the situation, yes,” Suresh confirmed, still writing. ”I’ve already had to designate a formal reception area near the east courtyard, set up translation protocols with your system’s help, and I’m currently negotiating with the Meridian Concord’s representatives about whether they’re allowed to bring their own security detail inside the walls.”

”Are they?”

”I told them no,” Suresh said. ”They didn’t love that, but they accepted it. I believe your reputation is doing most of the negotiating for me at this point.”

Ethan looked around at the growing, increasingly organized chaos of his own courtyard - banners he didn’t recognize being politely, carefully set up in a designated visitor area; the tea golem working at a pace that bordered on frantic trying to accommodate four different worlds’ worth of dietary preferences; Ren quietly, efficiently screening new arrivals at the gate with the practiced eye of someone who used to do the opposite job professionally.

”This is an embassy,” Ethan said slowly, the realization landing with the particular weight of something he should have seen coming. ”My apartment building is a full multiversal embassy now. Without me signing anything.”

”Functionally, yes,” Suresh said. ”I’d recommend, at minimum, establishing some formal ground rules before the fifth delegation shows up, because I don’t think this trend is slowing down anytime soon.”

Ethan let out a long, slow breath, watching the diplomatic chaos unfold around him with the exhausted resignation of a man who had, once again, ended up in charge of something he never applied for.

”Fine,” he said. ”New rules, effective immediately. Nobody gets in without going through you first. Nobody brings weapons past the gate. Everybody eats whatever the golem makes them and says thank you, because that machine works hard and doesn’t deserve to be disrespected by cross-dimensional diplomats. And if anyone - anyone - calls me ’Great Inheritor’ one more time, they’re getting escorted straight back out.”

Suresh, already writing this down verbatim, nodded without looking up. ”I’ll draft it properly and post it at the gate.”

It was well into the afternoon before Ethan finally got a moment alone, slipping away from the growing diplomatic circus to sit at the edge of the excavation site, staring down at the covered stairwell’s faint golden glow, still visible through the gaps in the tarp Osei’s team had rigged over it.

[NOTICE: The system believes now is an appropriate moment to raise something it has been holding since this morning’s revelation about the ”S.” designation.]

Ethan glanced down. ”Go ahead.”

[While cross-referencing Instance 44-Bryn’s partial archive against Kaia’s earlier account of the Deep Layer, the system found one additional entry it had not previously flagged - a short note attached to the ”S.” designation, dated shortly after that user’s return from direct contact with the Deep Layer.]

”What’s it say.”

[The entry reads: ”Successfully negotiated release of archived successor candidate. Candidate declined reactivation. Status returned to dormant, by mutual agreement.”]

Ethan sat with that for a long moment, the words settling slowly into a shape he didn’t entirely want them to take.

”Successor candidate,” he repeated. ”Dormant, by mutual agreement. That’s - that sounds like they found someone down there. In the Deep Layer. And whoever it was chose to stay dormant instead of coming back.”

[The system cannot confirm the candidate’s identity from the available fragment. It would like to be careful not to assume this refers to Arjun Mehra specifically. But it must acknowledge the timeline, the location, and the shared ”S.” designation together form a pattern the system cannot responsibly dismiss as unrelated.]

Ethan looked back down at the covered stairwell, at the faint gold light pulsing steady and patient in the dark below, and felt the whole shape of the last two weeks settle into something considerably heavier than he’d been prepared for.

”So maybe he’s down there,” Ethan said quietly. ”Maybe someone already found him. And maybe he already said no to coming back, the exact same way I keep saying no to everything they offer me.”

[That is possible, yes.]

”And if that’s true,” Ethan continued, ”then going down there myself isn’t gonna change his mind. It’s just gonna put me in the same room as an answer nobody’s actually ready to hear.”

[NOTICE: The system does not have a comfortable response to that either. It would simply like to note, honestly, that it does not know what the subject will find in the Deep Layer if he ever decides to go - only that every piece of evidence gathered so far suggests it will not be a simple answer, and it will not be an easy conversation, regardless of who, or what, is actually waiting there.]
