Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The room went very still, Arjun’s blurred form freezing mid-motion, his attention snapping toward the deepest recesses of the fractured structure with an intensity Ethan hadn’t seen from him since their very first meeting.

”Show me,” Arjun said, voice tight. ”Whatever that signature is. Now.”

[NOTICE: The system will attempt to isolate it.]

The fractured structure’s flickering light shifted, gold-violet fractures rearranging themselves slowly, deliberately, as though something buried deep beneath centuries of accumulated strain was finally being permitted to surface. A small section of the chamber’s floor, previously indistinguishable from the surrounding stone, began to glow - faint at first, then brighter, resolving into something that looked, unmistakably, like a second, smaller terminal, half-buried, forgotten, tucked into a recess that had clearly gone unnoticed for a very long time.

Arjun approached it slowly, his blurred features carrying an expression Ethan couldn’t quite read - hope and dread in equal measure.

”I know this,” he said quietly. ”I remember building this. Before I ever refused the seat. Before any of this.”

”You built it,” Ethan repeated. ”Down here. In the actual foundational layer.”

”I didn’t understand what I was doing at the time,” Arjun said, kneeling beside the small, buried terminal, running his hand along its cracked surface with something close to reverence. ”I only knew, back then, that something in me refused to simply say no and walk away without leaving a piece of myself behind - something that might actually help whoever came after me, instead of just a warning and an empty throne.”

He made contact with the terminal, and the buried structure flared to life, gold light spilling upward in a slow, gentle wave that felt, unlike everything else in this vast, exhausted chamber, genuinely warm.

[FRAGMENT RECOVERED: ”THE KING IS STILL-”]

The archive text hung in the air, completing itself at last, the missing words finally resolving after weeks of frustrating, incomplete fragments.

[FRAGMENT RECOVERED: ”THE KING IS STILL HERE, IF ANYONE EVER NEEDS HIM.”]

Ethan stared at the completed sentence, feeling something settle in his chest that he hadn’t expected - not shock, not revelation exactly, but a quiet, aching recognition of what Arjun had actually left behind, all those centuries ago, buried beneath layers of accumulated failure that had very nearly kept it hidden forever.

”That’s it,” Ethan said quietly. ”That’s the whole warning. It was never a warning at all.”

”No,” Arjun said, his voice unsteady. ”It was a promise. One I made to myself, back when I still believed I might eventually find my way back to being useful, even after refusing the throne. I built this fragment specifically so that if anyone ever needed help - real help, not administrative duty, not another burden - they’d be able to find whatever was left of me, buried down here, still willing to give it.”

Sundari stepped closer, her weathered composure cracking with an emotion Ethan hadn’t seen from her since their very first reunion. ”You never told me you built this.”

”I didn’t remember, fully, until just now,” Arjun admitted. ”Centuries of drifting does strange things to memory. I think some part of me buried this intentionally, alongside myself, so it would only surface if someone actually needed it badly enough to dig this deep.”

The buried terminal’s activation seemed to ripple outward through the entire fractured chamber, the accumulated strain that had been building for centuries finally finding, alongside the small distribution point Ethan and the system had established, a second source of relief - old, patient, and unexpectedly generous.

[NOTICE: THE FOUNDATIONAL ARCHITECTURE IS STABILIZING.]

The voice that spoke wasn’t the exhausted, fractured tone from before. It was steadier now, carrying something almost like genuine hope beneath its ancient weight.

[NOTICE: I DID NOT KNOW THIS FRAGMENT EXISTED WITHIN MY OWN STRUCTURE. IT HAS BEEN HERE, QUIETLY, FOR CENTURIES, WAITING.]

”That’s rather the story of my entire existence,” Arjun said, a faint, tired smile crossing his blurred features. ”Waiting for someone to actually need what I had left to offer, instead of just what I refused to give.”

Ethan watched the exchange, feeling the shape of the entire crisis finally, fully settle into something he could understand. Not a monster. Not an enemy. Just centuries of accumulated exhaustion, compounded by a foundational flaw nobody had ever thought to question, finally beginning to heal now that help - genuine, structured, distributed help - had actually arrived.

”So what happens now,” Ethan asked, addressing both the fractured structure and Arjun’s small buried fragment together. ”Is this enough? Does this fix it?”

[NOTICE: NOT ENTIRELY. THE FOUNDATIONAL STRAIN ACCUMULATED OVER CENTURIES CANNOT BE RESOLVED IN A SINGLE NIGHT’S DISTRIBUTION. BUT THIS REPRESENTS A GENUINE BEGINNING - THE FIRST TIME, IN MY ENTIRE EXISTENCE, THAT RELIEF HAS BEEN OFFERED RATHER THAN SIMPLY EXTRACTED.]

[NOTICE: I BELIEVE, WITH CONTINUED SUPPORT - THE WATCH’S DISTRIBUTED STEWARDSHIP, APPLIED PROPERLY AT THIS FOUNDATIONAL LEVEL RATHER THAN ONLY AT THE SURFACE - THE FORTY-SEVEN FLAGGED INSTANCES MAY BE ABLE TO STABILIZE WITHOUT REQUIRING INDIVIDUAL RESCUE MISSIONS TO EACH ONE.]

Ethan felt a genuine wave of relief wash through him at that, the impossible scale of the crisis finally shrinking down into something that felt, if not easy, at least survivable.

”How long,” he asked. ”How long before we know if it’s actually working?”

[NOTICE: UNCERTAIN. THE SYSTEM RECOMMENDS CONTINUED MONITORING OVER THE COMING DAYS. BUT THE INITIAL STABILIZATION SIGNS ARE PROMISING.]

They lingered in the chamber a while longer, Arjun spending time with the small, buried fragment of himself he’d apparently left behind centuries ago without ever fully remembering he’d done it, Sundari watching with an expression that carried more peace than Ethan had seen from her since this entire journey began.

”You found something you didn’t even know you were looking for,” she said quietly, to Arjun. ”After everything. After centuries of believing you’d left nothing behind but an empty throne and a warning nobody could finish reading.”

”I think,” Arjun said slowly, ”some part of me always hoped somebody would dig deep enough to find this. I just never let myself believe it would actually happen.”

Ethan, watching the quiet reunion unfold, felt the weight of the entire descent finally settle into something he could carry forward - not triumph, exactly, but a hard-won, genuine sense of progress, the crisis that had brought them down here transforming, slowly, into something considerably more hopeful than he’d dared expect when they’d first stepped through that unstable, flickering corridor.

[NOTICE: The system, quiet for a long moment, finally spoke again, its tone carrying a weight Ethan hadn’t heard from it before.]

Ethan glanced over. ”What’s on your mind?”

[NOTICE: The system would like to note that it has just received an update from the surface - the first confirmed data since their descent began, relayed through a connection the newly stabilized architecture apparently restored.]

[NOTICE: Instance 6-Halloway’s failure timeline, previously estimated at eighteen hours, has just been recalculated.]

Ethan felt his stomach tighten, bracing for bad news out of pure habit. ”And?”

[NOTICE: The failure has been fully arrested. Their terminal stabilized on its own, roughly the same moment the foundational distribution began here.]

Relief flooded through Ethan, real and immediate, before the system’s tone shifted, carrying something considerably more cautious.

[NOTICE: The system would also like to note, however, that this same connection has just relayed something else - an urgent transmission from the surface, timestamped only minutes ago, carrying the Coalition’s own emergency priority flag.]

[NOTICE: It is not about the Instances. It concerns the Grand Concord, currently still gathered at the subject’s own courtyard.]

[NOTICE: Something has happened there while the team has been below.]
