Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

They worked through the night, the small team spreading out across Instance 19-Marrow’s failing administrative core, each of them applying whatever specific expertise they carried to a structure none of them had ever seen before but all of them, in their own ways, understood intimately.

Sundari worked the outer stabilization wards, her centuries of experience with ancient system architecture proving invaluable as she coaxed failing containment fields back into something resembling function. Malachar, surprisingly, turned out to have genuine talent for the more technical, administrative side of the work, his decade of managing a fractured Instance’s own systems translating unexpectedly well into diagnosing exactly where Marrow’s Framework had begun to buckle. Arjun moved through the space like he belonged there, centuries of drifting, half-present existence finally given a purpose that let him channel that vast, distant awareness into something concrete and useful.

Ethan, for his part, did what he’d always done best - found the actual problem underneath the panic, and applied brute, stubborn force where it was needed most.

”The core’s not failing evenly,” he said, several hours in, sweat-soaked and exhausted but focused, tracing the cracked stone with one hand. ”It’s collapsing from one specific point. Everything else is just strain radiating outward from there.”

[NOTICE: The system concurs. It has identified the origin point - a chamber roughly forty meters below their current position, previously undetected because Instance 19-Marrow’s own scanning architecture never mapped that deep.]

”Forty meters below,” Ethan repeated. ”That’s not part of their Framework’s known structure at all.”

[NOTICE: Correct. The system believes, based on architectural similarities, that this chamber may connect directly to the same deep layer of Origin Engine infrastructure the subject discovered beneath his own courtyard - the buried city, the guardians, all of it. If that theory holds, every Instance across the network may share access to the same underlying architecture, simply buried at different depths depending on the Instance’s own age and history.]

Ethan felt the weight of that settle with growing unease. ”So there’s a whole other layer under every world in the network, and nobody’s ever mapped it properly.”

[NOTICE: That appears to be the case, yes.]

”Then that’s where we need to go,” Ethan said, already moving toward the chamber’s cracked, straining floor. ”If the failure’s radiating from down there, we’re not fixing anything up here. We need to get to the source.”

The floor gave way with startling ease once they found the right spot - not collapsing violently, but opening in a slow, deliberate motion that felt, unmistakably, like something ancient recognizing exactly what was approaching and choosing, finally, to let it in.

Below lay a chamber that made Ethan’s breath catch despite everything he’d already witnessed over the past several weeks - vast, dim, carved from the same dark bronze architecture as the terminal beneath his own courtyard, except here, the walls pulsed with an unstable, flickering light, gold-violet fractures spreading across every surface like veins under strained, failing skin.

At the chamber’s center stood a structure Ethan recognized immediately, having seen its twin beneath his own Citadel - a terminal, ancient and patient, except here, cracked and struggling, its steady glow reduced to erratic, desperate flickering.

”It’s failing,” Sundari said quietly, crouching beside it. ”Not attacked. Not corrupted. Just - exhausted. Centuries of strain, finally reaching a breaking point.”

[NOTICE: The system can confirm this assessment. This Instance’s own terminal has been operating without proper maintenance or oversight for considerably longer than Earth’s terminal was left dormant. The restructuring’s recent activity - the Origin Engine’s own reorganization efforts across the network - appears to have placed sudden, unexpected demand on architecture that was already critically weakened.]

Ethan approached the failing terminal carefully, feeling its distress in a way that reminded him uncomfortably of the moment he’d first synchronized with his own courtyard’s version weeks ago - except this one felt different, desperate, like something reaching out for help it didn’t fully believe would come.

”Can I help it,” he asked. ”The same way I connected with the one at home?”

[NOTICE: The system cannot guarantee the outcome. This terminal’s condition is considerably more critical than anything the subject has previously encountered. There is genuine risk in direct contact.]

”Then I’ll take the risk,” Ethan said, already kneeling before it, palm hovering over its cracked, flickering surface.

Arjun caught his shoulder before he could make contact, his blurred expression carrying real concern. ”Let me do this one,” he said. ”I’ve held contact with failing architecture before, more times than I care to remember. I understand what this actually requires better than you do.”

Ethan hesitated, then nodded, stepping back to let Arjun kneel in his place.

Arjun’s hand met the terminal’s surface, and the chamber flooded with light - not the surge Ethan remembered from his own first contact, but something gentler, more careful, like a practiced hand steadying something fragile rather than forcing a connection.

”I know,” Arjun murmured, to the terminal, to whatever remained of its consciousness. ”I know you’ve been carrying this alone for a very long time. That’s not your fault. Nobody built you to hold this weight indefinitely without anyone checking in.”

The flickering slowed, gradually, the erratic gold-violet fractures along the walls steadying into something calmer, more controlled.

[NOTICE: STABILIZATION IN PROGRESS.]

[NOTICE: THANK YOU.]

The words appeared faintly in the air above the terminal, plain and exhausted, carrying none of the Origin Engine’s usual vast, ancient authority - just simple, grateful relief.

By the time the sun rose over Instance 19-Marrow, the sky’s fractures had sealed, the administrative core’s collapse fully arrested, and Chancellor Meret stood at the entrance of the newly discovered chamber, staring down at the small, exhausted team with an expression of overwhelming relief.

”You saved us,” she said. ”Genuinely. I don’t know how to properly thank you for that.”

”Don’t thank us yet,” Ethan said, exhausted but honest. ”We found something down here that worries me more than the collapse we just fixed.”

He explained it as best he could - the deeper layer, the shared architecture connecting every Instance in the network, the growing suspicion that the Watch’s own restructuring efforts might be placing dangerous, unexpected strain on systems that had been quietly, invisibly deteriorating for centuries, unnoticed until they finally broke.

Meret absorbed the explanation with visible dread. ”You’re saying this could happen again. Elsewhere.”

”I’m saying it’s probably already happening elsewhere,” Ethan said. ”We just don’t know where yet, because nobody’s ever mapped this deeper layer properly before.”

They returned to Earth exhausted but successful, the courtyard greeting them with the particular relief of a community that had spent an anxious night waiting for news. But the celebration, brief as it was, gave way quickly to the sober reality of what they’d discovered.

[NOTICE: The system would like to formally report its findings to the subject and the assembled Watch negotiators.]

Ethan, barely rested, nodded for it to continue. ”Go ahead.”

[NOTICE: Based on the discovery at Instance 19-Marrow, the system has cross-referenced every registered Instance’s own terminal architecture against known age and maintenance history. It has identified forty-seven additional Instances currently showing early warning signs consistent with the same cascading failure pattern.]

The number landed heavily across the gathered courtyard, delegates who’d celebrated moments earlier falling silent at the true scope of what was unfolding.

”Forty-seven,” Malachar repeated slowly. ”That’s not a single crisis. That’s a systemic one.”

[NOTICE: The system agrees. It would recommend the Watch’s founding negotiations shift priority immediately - from building the ideal, fully deliberated structure everyone originally envisioned, to establishing, urgently, whatever minimum functional framework can begin addressing these failures before more Instances reach the same critical point Marrow nearly did.]

Ethan closed his eyes, feeling the weight of an entire multiverse’s worth of quietly crumbling foundations settle over him, the careful, methodical timeline everyone had assumed they had suddenly, dramatically compressed.

”Then I guess the committee sessions just got a lot more urgent,” he said finally, exhaustion giving way, slowly, to the same stubborn, determined focus that had carried him through every impossible crisis this story had thrown at him so far. ”How fast can we actually move on this?”

[NOTICE: The system does not have a reassuring answer to that question.]

[NOTICE: It would simply like to note that the first of the forty-seven Instances flagged as critical - designated Instance 6-Halloway - is already showing failure signs considerably more advanced than Marrow’s were before this crisis began.]
