Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

They didn’t get long to sit with Arjun’s warning before the archival sky above them rippled again, gold-violet text folding inward on itself to form a second point of arrival a short distance away - the same slow, deliberate manifestation Ethan had watched happen with the Threshold Accord’s original corridor, except cruder here, faster, like the Deep Layer itself was in a hurry to introduce its next candidate.

The figure that stepped through wasn’t gentle about the arrival. He came through already armored, already armed, a heavy blade strapped across his back and a presence that filled the space around him the way the Arbiter once had - not through size, but through sheer, compressed intensity, the kind of stillness that came from someone who’d spent years learning exactly how much force he could carry without needing to announce it.

He looked around the vast space once, took in Arjun’s seated, blurred form, Sundari’s grief-stricken expression, Kaia’s wary stance, and finally settled on Ethan, studying him with cold, assessing eyes.

”So you’re the new one,” he said. Not a question.

”Depends who’s asking,” Ethan said.

”Malachar Vess,” the man said. ”Rank One, Instance-9. Registered candidate for the Grinding, same as you, apparently, given the timing of your own arrival.”

[NOTICE: The system has cross-referenced this name against every accessible archive and can confirm Malachar Vess is, indeed, another confirmed unresolvable-class user - one whose classification predates the subject’s own by several years.]

”Great,” Ethan said. ”Another one. You get pulled in the same way I did?”

”No,” Malachar said flatly. ”I chose this. Every step of it. I didn’t stumble into unresolvable power through some accident of broken system architecture the way I’m told you did. I earned mine, deliberately, over a decade of grinding my Instance’s apocalypse system harder than anyone before or since. I intend to earn the Grinding’s outcome the exact same way.”

Ethan raised an eyebrow. ”You chose the tournament everyone else is being forced into.”

”I registered for it the moment it was announced,” Malachar said, something proud and unyielding in his posture. ”My Instance has been unified under my authority for three years. I did not achieve that unification by refusing every opportunity handed to me the way you apparently have. I achieved it by taking every scrap of power available and using it properly.”

Sundari, still visibly raw from her reunion with Arjun, straightened at that, something sharp entering her voice. ”Unified how, exactly? I’ve heard rumors about Instance-9’s ’unification.’ They don’t sound like anything worth being proud of.”

Malachar’s expression didn’t waver. ”My world was fracturing into a hundred warring factions before I intervened. I ended that. Completely, permanently, and without asking anyone’s permission first. If that offends your sensibilities, I’d ask how many people your own careful, permission-seeking approach has actually saved, compared to mine.”

Ethan felt the air between them tighten, the beginnings of an old, familiar tension he recognized from every recruitment pitch and every philosophical clash this story had thrown at him — except this time, the man across from him wasn’t asking Ethan to lead anything. He was defending a throne he’d already claimed.

”You run your whole world,” Ethan said slowly. ”Everything. Every faction, every decision.”

”Everything,” Malachar confirmed, no hesitation in it. ”It is, without exception, the most stable my Instance has been since the apocalypse began.”

”Stable how? Are people happy? Free? Or just quiet because they know what happens if they’re not?”

Something flickered behind Malachar’s cold composure - brief, quickly suppressed, but Ethan caught it anyway. ”Happiness is a luxury unstable worlds cannot afford. I gave my people survival first. Everything else can be built afterward, once the foundation is secure.”

”That’s exactly the kind of thing people say right before the foundation turns out to be the only thing that ever actually gets built,” Ethan said quietly.

Malachar’s jaw tightened, and for a moment, Ethan thought the conversation might actually tip into something physical - the tension in the vast space thick enough that even the archival sky above seemed to slow its endless scroll, as if watching.

It was Arjun, still seated at the base of the great bronze structure, who finally broke the standoff, his layered voice carrying an unexpected weight.

”You’re both making the same mistake,” he said.

Both men turned toward him, surprised by the interjection.

”You,” Arjun continued, looking at Malachar, ”believe control is the same thing as care. You built a stable world by removing everyone’s ability to choose anything for themselves, and you’ve convinced yourself that’s mercy. It isn’t. It’s just a slower version of what the Grinding does to people who accept the seat - you’ve already surrendered pieces of yourself for the sake of that stability. You just did it voluntarily, and called it strength.”

Malachar’s expression darkened, but he didn’t interrupt.

”And you,” Arjun said, turning to Ethan, ”believe refusal is always the answer, that saying no cleanly is enough to keep yourself whole. It has been, so far. But the Grinding isn’t asking you to accept a crown you can decline. It’s testing whether you can survive contact with something vast without losing the shape of who you are. Refusal alone won’t save you there. You’ll need something else, and I don’t think either of you has figured out yet what that actually is.”

The two men stood in uneasy silence, Arjun’s words settling over both of them with a weight that neither seemed fully ready to accept.

[NOTICE: The system would like to interject with something it has been quietly processing during this exchange - a detail relevant to both candidates now present.]

Ethan glanced over. ”What.”

[The archival sky has just updated the Grinding’s registered participant count. It currently lists four confirmed candidates: the subject, Malachar Vess, the Instance 12-Kesh successor whose message reached the subject earlier, and one additional entry the system has not previously encountered.]

[NOTICE: The fourth candidate’s designation reads simply: ”S. - REACTIVATED STATUS PENDING.”]

Sundari went very still, her eyes snapping toward the empty space where the notification had appeared, disbelief and something close to fear crossing her features simultaneously.

”That’s not possible,” she said quietly. ”I’m not registered for anything. I never agreed to participate in this.”

[NOTICE: The system would like to note that this appears to be the exact same circumstance the subject and Malachar Vess are currently in. Consent, as previously stated by Arjun Mehra, does not appear to be a requirement for candidacy.]

Sundari’s composure, already worn thin by the reunion with Arjun and the tension with Malachar, finally cracked fully, something raw and frightened breaking through the centuries of careful, weathered strength she’d carried since Ethan first met her in the courtyard.

”I already went through something like this once,” she said, voice shaking slightly. ”Eight years ago, when I first found this place. I didn’t take the seat. I didn’t accept anything. I just - asked questions, the way you and I are asking now. And it still marked me. It still counted me.”

Ethan felt the weight of that settle into a shape he recognized with dawning, uncomfortable clarity.

”So every time someone gets close enough to this place to ask real questions,” he said slowly, ”the Origin Engine’s already counting them as a candidate. Whether they meant to be or not.”

”That appears to be exactly what’s happening,” Sundari said quietly, staring at the notification still hanging in the archival sky above them, her own name - the initial she’d carried for centuries — now listed alongside Ethan’s and Malachar’s as a confirmed participant in a tournament none of them had actually agreed to enter.

Malachar, watching the exchange with narrowed eyes, finally spoke again, his earlier hostility tempered slightly by the shared, growing unease in the room.

”Four candidates,” he said. ”One of them barely conscious, one of them clearly unwilling, one of them me, and one of them you.” He looked at Ethan directly. ”Whatever happens in seventy-two hours, Verma, I suspect neither of us is walking into it the way we thought we would an hour ago.”
