Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The three worlds hung above the pedestal, patient and merciless in their presentation, each one accompanied by a clean, clinical summary that made the horror of the choice feel almost administrative.

INSTANCE 31-KESTREL - Population: 4.2 million. Failing cause: unchecked Calamity spawn, projected total collapse in six months. Stabilization would prevent an estimated 3.8 million deaths.

INSTANCE 17-DUNE - Population: 11.6 million. Failing cause: resource system corruption, causing slow, agonizing famine across the Instance’s surviving territories. Stabilization would prevent widespread suffering but fewer immediate deaths, an estimated 900,000 over the coming decade.

INSTANCE 52-THORNE - Population: 800,000. Failing cause: total Framework collapse, imminent, days rather than months. Stabilization would save the entire remaining population, but represents the smallest total number of lives preserved.

Ethan stared at the numbers, feeling something cold and nauseating settle into his stomach. ”This isn’t a hypothetical, is it. These are real worlds. Real people, actually dying, right now, while we sit here.”

[NOTICE: THE THREE INSTANCES PRESENTED ARE GENUINE, CURRENTLY REGISTERED CASES WITHIN THE NETWORK, ACCURATELY REPRESENTED.]

”Then give the resource to all three,” Ethan said immediately. ”Split it. Prioritize the worst cases first, but don’t just abandon two of them because the trial wants a clean answer.”

[THE RESOURCE DOES NOT DIVIDE. IT STABILIZES ONE INSTANCE FULLY, OR NONE AT ALL. THIS IS NOT A LIMITATION IMPOSED FOR THE TRIAL’S CONVENIENCE. IT REFLECTS THE ACTUAL CONSTRAINTS OF THE ARCHITECTURE THE SEAT WOULD ACTUALLY GOVERN.]

Malachar, who’d been studying the numbers with the same grim, practiced focus he’d once brought to a decade of ruthless grinding, spoke first among the candidates. ”Instance 31-Kestrel. It saves the most lives in absolute terms. That’s not a difficult calculation.”

”It’s not that simple,” Ethan said. ”Instance 52-Thorne loses everyone if we don’t help them. Every single person. That’s not a number you can just weigh against a bigger number and call it settled.”

”It’s exactly that simple,” Malachar said, some of his old, unyielding certainty returning, though tempered now by something more careful than before. ”I spent a decade making choices like this, Verma. Real ones, with real consequences, for real people under my authority. You save the most lives you can. Every other consideration is a luxury you can’t afford when the alternative is watching more people die because you got sentimental about the smaller number.”

”That’s not sentiment,” Ethan said, sharper than he meant to. ”That’s the difference between saving three-point-eight million people out of four-point-two, and saving every single person in a world that’s about to lose everyone. One of those outcomes leaves survivors who still have a world left to rebuild. The other leaves nothing at all.”

Sundari, quiet until now, finally spoke, her ancient, weathered voice carrying a weight that cut through the growing tension. ”You’re both approaching this as pure calculation. I don’t think that’s the right lens at all.”

”Then what is,” Malachar demanded.

”Consider Instance 17-Dune,” Sundari said. ”Fewer immediate deaths, but the largest total population suffering the longest, most drawn-out collapse. Famine doesn’t kill quickly. It kills slowly, cruelly, and it takes the most vulnerable first - children, the elderly, the sick. The raw numbers make it look like the least urgent choice. I’d argue it might be the most urgent, precisely because nobody’s proposing to help them first.”

Ethan turned that over, feeling the impossible weight of the decision multiply with every new angle raised. ”So now we’ve got three completely different frameworks for what ’right’ even means here. Most lives saved. Total extinction avoided. Least visible suffering prevented.”

”Welcome to the actual job,” Voren said quietly, speaking for the first time since the trial began, his layered, distant voice carrying an exhaustion that made every other voice in the chamber pause. ”This is what the seat asks, every day, for every Instance under its care. Not once. Not as a single dramatic choice you make and move past. Constantly, endlessly, for as long as you hold it.”

The chamber went quiet, the weight of Voren’s words settling over all four of them.

”Is that what happened to you?” Ethan asked carefully. ”Two hundred years of choices exactly like this one?”

”Yes,” Voren said simply. ”And I want you to understand something, all of you, before this trial forces a decision none of us can make cleanly. I did not lose myself because the choices were hard. I lost myself because I stopped feeling the weight of them. Somewhere around year forty, I began treating decisions like this one as pure mathematics, because the alternative - feeling the actual, human cost of every choice, every single time - was unbearable to sustain indefinitely. The seat doesn’t take you by force. It offers you numbness as a mercy, and eventually, you accept it, because the alternative is drowning.”

Ethan felt that land with brutal clarity, the true shape of Voren’s tragedy finally coming into full, horrifying focus. Not corruption. Not coercion. Just the slow, merciful erosion of feeling, offered as relief from an unbearable weight, accepted gradually enough that nobody ever noticed the exact moment they stopped being fully themselves.

”Then that’s the actual test,” Ethan said slowly. ”Not which world we choose. Whether we can make this choice - any choice - without letting it turn us numb the way it turned you numb.”

Voren’s blurred expression shifted, something that might have been relief crossing his ancient features. ”Perhaps,” he said. ”I hope so, genuinely. I would like, very much, for at least one of you to prove that’s possible.”

They argued for nearly two hours, the trial’s countdown ticking steadily in the background, each candidate bringing a genuinely different, defensible framework to a decision that had no clean answer buried anywhere within it. Malachar’s ruthless utilitarian math. Sundari’s focus on prevented suffering over prevented deaths. Ethan’s insistence that total extinction represented a categorically different kind of loss than partial loss, however large the raw numbers looked on paper. Voren, mostly silent, occasionally offering the perspective of someone who’d made thousands of choices like this one and lost himself somewhere in the accumulated weight of them.

It was Ethan, finally, exhausted and raw from hours of circular, agonizing debate, who proposed something none of them had considered.

”What if the point isn’t picking the mathematically correct world,” he said slowly. ”What if the point is that we’re supposed to disagree, genuinely, honestly, and then find a way to actually respect each other’s reasoning instead of just overpowering it with the loudest argument or the biggest number?”

Malachar studied him. ”You’re suggesting compromise.”

”No,” Ethan said. ”I’m suggesting we each explain, honestly, which world we’d choose and why, and then instead of arguing until one framework wins, we vote - genuinely, with full weight given to every perspective, including the ones we disagree with. Not because it guarantees the ’right’ answer. Because it’s the only version of this decision that doesn’t require any of us to pretend we have a monopoly on what matters most.”

Sundari considered that for a long moment, something thoughtful settling behind her tired expression. ”That’s not a clean solution. It doesn’t resolve the actual philosophical disagreement between us.”

”No,” Ethan agreed. ”But maybe that’s the point. Maybe the seat isn’t supposed to be held by someone who’s resolved every disagreement inside themselves. Maybe it’s supposed to be held by someone who can sit with the disagreement, take it seriously, and still make a choice without losing feeling for the weight of it.”

The chamber’s archival sky, silent throughout the entire debate, finally rippled, the Origin Engine’s patient voice returning with something that carried, unmistakably, genuine interest.

[NOTICE: THAT IS THE FIRST TIME, IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF THIS TRIAL, THAT A CANDIDATE HAS PROPOSED CHANGING THE QUESTION RATHER THAN ANSWERING IT AS PRESENTED.]

[NOTICE: PROCEED WITH THE VOTE, CANDIDATES. THE OUTCOME WILL BE BINDING, REGARDLESS OF WHICH DIRECTION IT FALLS.]

Ethan looked around the circle - at Malachar, weighing his utilitarian certainty against the value of genuine disagreement; at Sundari, still carrying centuries of grief and hard-won wisdom; at Voren, watching all of them with something that looked, for the first time since they’d met him, almost like hope.

”Okay,” Ethan said quietly. ”Let’s actually decide this. Together.”
