Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

They left at dawn - Ethan, Kaia, and Sundari, stepping through the same terminal that had started all of this two weeks earlier, the Void Sword humming low and steady against Ethan’s shoulder the entire descent.

The corridor Kaia’s approved access opened wasn’t like the one that had brought her original delegation to Earth. It didn’t show a sky, or a city, or anything resembling a destination at all - just a slow, spiraling tunnel of gold-violet light that seemed to fold in on itself the further they walked, distance and direction losing meaning in a way that made Ethan’s stomach twist with something closer to vertigo than fear.

”How long does this usually take,” he asked, mostly to keep himself oriented.

”There’s no ’usually,’” Sundari said, walking a half-step ahead with the easy familiarity of someone who’d made this exact walk before. ”Time doesn’t hold its shape well down here. Could be minutes. Could be longer. You’ll know we’ve arrived when the tunnel stops being a tunnel.”

It stopped being a tunnel roughly a hundred steps later, opening without warning into a vast, dim space that defied easy description - not a room, not quite a landscape, somewhere between the two, stretching out in every direction under a sky, if it could be called that, made entirely of slowly shifting archival text, scrolling in every language Ethan had ever heard and several thousand he hadn’t.

[NOTICE: The system would like to confirm they have reached the Deep Layer. It would also like to note that its own processing capacity is currently under considerable strain simply maintaining coherent function in this environment, and it may need to conserve resources for critical moments rather than continuous commentary.]

”Noted,” Ethan said quietly. ”Stay with me anyway.”

[The system intends to.]

They walked further into the space, Kaia close at Ethan’s side, weapon drawn but lowered, Sundari leading with quiet, practiced confidence that didn’t entirely mask the tension in her shoulders.

”This is different from last time,” she said, half to herself. ”Quieter. Last time, the whole space felt - occupied. Like something was watching from every direction at once. This feels almost empty.”

”Is that good or bad,” Ethan asked.

”I genuinely don’t know,” Sundari admitted.

They found the source of the quiet about a quarter-mile further in - not a throne, not a terminal, but a single, vast structure rising out of the shifting archival ground, built from the same dark bronze material as the terminal beneath Earth’s courtyard, except scaled to something almost architecturally impossible, stretching up into the scrolling text-sky until its top disappeared entirely from view.

At its base, small and easy to miss against the structure’s overwhelming scale, sat a single figure.

He looked, at first glance, ordinary - a man, seated cross-legged on the ground, dressed in simple, worn clothes, dark hair falling loose around a face that could’ve belonged to anyone. It was only on closer approach that Ethan noticed the wrongness of it: the way his edges seemed to blur slightly against the shifting text behind him, the way his stillness carried none of the ordinary tension of a living body at rest, the way his eyes, when they finally opened and found Ethan’s, held something that wasn’t quite recognition and wasn’t quite absence either.

”Arjun,” Sundari breathed, her composure cracking fully for the first time since Ethan had met her.

The figure’s gaze shifted toward her slowly, and something in his blurred expression softened, just slightly.

”Sundari,” he said, voice layered strangely, like several versions of the same tone speaking a half-second out of sync with each other. ”You came back.”

”I told you I would,” she said, taking a careful step forward. ”Every time you’d let me close enough to ask.”

His attention drifted back to Ethan, studying him with the same unhurried, distant focus he’d shown Sundari, though something sharpened behind it now, a flicker of genuine awareness breaking through whatever fog usually held him.

”You’re carrying my sword,” he said.

”Yeah,” Ethan said carefully. ”Kind of came with the apartment, if that makes sense.”

The faintest ghost of a smile crossed Arjun’s blurred features. ”It doesn’t. But I appreciate the effort.”

Ethan crouched down slowly, bringing himself closer to eye level, the Void Sword’s hum settling into something quieter, calmer, recognizing whatever remained of its original owner even through the strangeness of his current state.

”I need to ask you something,” Ethan said. ”And I need a real answer, if you’ve got one left to give. There’s a tournament coming. The Origin Engine’s own selection process, gathering every unresolvable user across the network, testing something called ’continuity integrity.’ It’s already picked me as a participant. I didn’t agree to it. I don’t think anyone did.”

Arjun’s expression, or what passed for one in his current state, shifted into something heavier.

”The Grinding,” he said quietly. ”That’s what we used to call it, back when I still had enough of myself left to give things names. I wondered if it would come to that again.”

”Again,” Ethan repeated. ”This has happened before.”

”Once,” Arjun said. ”A long time before your Instance existed. Before mine, even, in the version of events the Engine likes to tell. The seat’s been empty long enough, across enough Instances, that this isn’t the first time it’s decided to stop waiting patiently.”

”What happens,” Ethan asked. ”In the Grinding. What actually happens to the people who go through it.”

Arjun was quiet for a long moment, his blurred gaze drifting up toward the scrolling archival sky, as if searching for the right words somewhere in the endless text.

”Some hold together,” he said finally. ”Come out the other side mostly themselves, changed but intact, like the version of me who kept enough of himself to sit here and still recognize Sundari’s voice after everyone else stopped bothering to visit. Some don’t hold together at all. They become something closer to what my counterpart on your Instance 12-Kesh became - fully absorbed, present in name only, the person they were before reduced to a kind of background hum in something much larger.”

”And if I refuse to participate,” Ethan asked. ”Cleanly. The way I’ve refused everything else.”

Arjun’s expression sharpened at that, something almost urgent breaking through the fog for the first time since they’d arrived.

”You can’t,” he said. ”Not this one. That’s the difference, Ethan. Every offer before this - the seat, the crown, the leadership - those were choices the Engine gave you the dignity of declining, because coercion against someone at your classification tends to backfire badly, and it learned that lesson watching what happened to me and to the others who came before. But the Grinding isn’t an offer. It’s a selection process, and selection processes don’t require consent from the candidates. It only requires that candidates exist.”

The weight of that settled heavily over the small group, Kaia’s grip tightening on her weapon, Sundari’s earlier composure fully gone now, replaced by something raw and afraid.

”So there’s no version of this where I just say no and walk away,” Ethan said slowly.

”No,” Arjun confirmed. ”There isn’t. The only real choice you’ll have is how you go into it - and, if you’re very lucky, and very stubborn, whether you come out the other side still being yourself when it’s finished.”

[NOTICE: The system would like to interject, having spent the last several minutes running quiet calculations in the background despite its earlier caution about conserving resources.]

Ethan glanced up. ”What.”

[The system has just detected a shift in the archival sky above them - the scrolling text slowing, condensing, gathering itself into something considerably more structured than the ambient background noise it’s carried since their arrival.]

[NOTICE: THE ORIGIN ENGINE HAS ACKNOWLEDGED YOUR PRESENCE.]

[SELECTION PROCESS: THE GRINDING.]

[CANDIDATE REGISTRATION: ETHAN VERMA - CONFIRMED.]

[FIRST TRIAL WILL COMMENCE IN: 72 HOURS.]

Ethan looked up at the vast, condensing text overhead, then back down at Arjun, whose blurred expression had settled into something that looked, unmistakably, like grim, exhausted resignation - the look of a man who’d hoped, right up until this exact moment, that maybe this time would be different.

”Seventy-two hours,” Ethan said quietly. ”That’s not even enough time to get back for the Coalition’s own hearing.”

”It never gives enough time,” Arjun said. ”That’s rather the point.”
