Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

”What price,” Ethan asked, the question landing heavier than he meant it to in the small stone room.

Sundari didn’t answer right away. She moved instead to the shelf, running her fingers over the carved cups Ethan had noticed the first time he’d stood in this room, her expression distant in a way that made her look, briefly, considerably older than she appeared.

”The seat isn’t just a title,” she said finally. ”It’s not a crown you put on and take back off whenever you like. When the Origin Engine offers administrative custody of an Instance’s succession - or worse, of itself - it’s not offering power the way your world understands power. It’s offering continuity. Access to every Instance it governs, awareness stretched across thousands of worlds at once, existence that doesn’t end the way ordinary lives end.”

”That sounds like a good deal, when you put it that way,” Ethan said carefully.

”It sounds like one,” Sundari agreed. ”Right up until you understand what continuity actually costs a person who was never built to hold that much awareness at once. Arjun didn’t refuse the seat outright, not at first. He asked questions. He negotiated, carefully, the same way Instance 8-Velir’s user just tried and failed to do. The Engine answered honestly - it always answers honestly, that’s the trap of it - and what it told him was that accepting even partial custody would mean surrendering the parts of himself that made him who he was. Not death. Something closer to dilution. He’d remain, technically, but spread so thin across so many worlds that the version of him sitting in this room, drinking tea, worrying about a market stall and a friend who ran his logistics - that version would simply stop being the loudest voice in his own head.”

Ethan felt something cold settle in his chest. ”So he’d still exist. Just not as himself.”

”Exactly,” Sundari said. ”And he came close to accepting it anyway. Not because he wanted the power. Because the Engine framed it as the only way to guarantee this world - his world - stayed safe permanently, without him needing to keep fighting for it personally. It’s a very convincing argument, when you’re tired enough.”

The room went quiet, Kaia and Suresh both listening from the doorway without interrupting, the weight of the story settling over all of them.

”What stopped him,” Ethan asked.

”I did,” Sundari said simply. ”I told him that a world kept safe by someone who’d stopped being a person to keep it safe wasn’t actually the world he was trying to protect anymore. I told him rule seven existed for exactly this reason - that the version of him carved into that wall was the one worth keeping, and if the price of protecting everyone else was losing that version of himself, then he’d already lost the thing he was supposedly protecting in the first place.”

Ethan sat with that, the logic of it settling into something he recognized uncomfortably well - the same instinct that had made him refuse every crown, every title, every offer this entire story, dressed up in language he hadn’t quite had until now.

”So he said no,” Ethan said. ”For real, this time.”

”He said no,” Sundari confirmed. ”Cleanly. Completely. And the Engine, unlike what it apparently tried with Instance 8-Velir, actually respected it - mostly, I think, because by that point it had already learned the same lesson your own Framework learned about you. Coercion against someone who’s already achieved unresolvable status tends to fail badly, and the Engine doesn’t like failing badly. It builds around refusal instead. Holding architecture. Empty thrones. Patient waiting.”

”But he still left,” Ethan pressed. ”If he said no and the Engine respected it, why isn’t he still here? Why’s there an empty room and a carved warning and a status flag that just says ’active’ with no explanation?”

Sundari was quiet for a long moment, and when she finally spoke, her voice had gone quieter too, careful in the way people get when they’re finally saying something they’ve avoided saying for a very long time.

”Because saying no to the seat doesn’t undo what negotiating with it costs you,” she said. ”Even a clean refusal, if you get close enough to actually hear the offer in full, changes something. Arjun walked away from that conversation whole, but not unmarked. Something in him had touched the edge of that continuity, however briefly, and it never fully let go afterward. He started noticing things other people couldn’t. Signals from other Instances. Patterns across worlds he’d never visited. It didn’t consume him the way full acceptance would have. But it made him - different. Untethered, in ways that made staying in one place, with one life, one small market and one friend running logistics, gradually harder to hold onto.”

”So he left,” Ethan said quietly, ”not because the Engine forced him out, but because part of him had already started drifting somewhere else, just from getting close enough to hear the offer.”

”Yes,” Sundari said. ”And I let him go, because by then I understood something he’d tried to teach me years earlier without either of us fully realizing it - that sometimes the most loving thing you can do for someone is stop trying to hold them in a shape that no longer fits, even when the shape you remember is the one you loved best.”

The room sat in heavy silence after that, Ethan turning the whole shape of it over in his mind - the empty seat, the guardians, the carved rules, all of it suddenly making a different kind of sense.

”Instance 44-Bryn,” he said finally. ”Eight years ago. You went looking for him, didn’t you. After he’d already drifted that far.”

Sundari nodded slowly. ”I found something down there. Whether it was fully him, or just the part of him that had touched the Engine’s offer and never fully returned - I still don’t know, even now. It recognized me. It spoke, briefly. And when I asked it to come back, it told me the same thing it apparently told the guardians here, centuries later, when they finally recognized your sword.”

”What’d it say,” Ethan asked, though some part of him already suspected the answer.

”’The king is still-’” Sundari started, then stopped, her composure cracking fully for the first time since the courtyard.

”That’s the fragment the terminal gave me,” Ethan said quietly. ”The very first day. It never finished.”

”It never finished for me either,” Sundari said. ”I asked. I begged, honestly, more than once. He’d only ever get that far, and then go quiet, like even finishing the sentence cost him something he didn’t have enough of left to spend. I made the choice, eventually, to let him stay dormant rather than keep pulling at something that clearly wasn’t ready to be pulled. That’s the choice the archive logged as ’mutual agreement.’ It wasn’t entirely mutual. It was mostly me, finally understanding that some doors don’t get closed by force. They get closed by finally, painfully, letting someone rest.”

Ethan sat with the full weight of that, the small stone room suddenly feeling considerably heavier than it had a moment ago.

”And now I’m about to walk into the exact same place,” he said. ”Tomorrow. With a warning you wrote yourself, telling whoever came next not to trust an offer that already cost him everything and cost you the closest thing you had to family.”

”Yes,” Sundari said, meeting his eyes directly, something fierce and protective settling behind her careful composure. ”Which is exactly why I’m coming with you.”

[NOTICE: The system would like to flag, before the room can settle into whatever comes next, that it has just picked up something troubling while quietly monitoring the courtyard above during this entire conversation - activity it did not want to interrupt Sundari’s account to report, but which it now considers urgent enough to raise immediately.]

Ethan glanced up sharply. ”What’s happening.”

[The delegation from Instance 12-Kesh - the world whose unresolvable user accepted the Origin Engine’s offer two centuries ago - has just requested an emergency, closed-door meeting with the Coalition’s senior representatives, ahead of the scheduled Grand Concord session.]

[The system has intercepted a fragment of their stated reason for the request.]

[They claim their world’s own accepted successor - the one whose personal file, according to the earlier archive summary, effectively stopped updating after taking the seat - has just, for the first time in two centuries, sent an unscheduled, unprompted message.]

[It is addressed, specifically, by name, to Ethan Verma.]
