Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Ethan didn’t get the full six hours.

He got closer to two, most of it spent in the kind of shallow, restless half-sleep that came from a body demanding rest while a mind refused to fully cooperate, before Priya’s voice cut through the haze of his own bedroom with the particular sharpness she reserved for genuine emergencies.

”Ethan. You need to come to the gate. Now.”

He was moving before he’d fully processed the words, pulling on whatever clothes were closest, Void Sword already in hand out of pure reflex by the time he reached the courtyard and found it considerably more chaotic than he’d left it a few hours earlier.

The Instance-9 delegation stood clustered near the gate, no longer just the handful of officers from the day before but a full formal contingent, banners raised, weapons visible though not drawn, facing off against a defensive line of Citadel guards and a scattering of other delegations who’d woken to the commotion and come to see what was happening.

At the front of the Instance-9 group stood a woman Ethan hadn’t met - older, severe, wearing insignia that marked her as considerably more senior than the officer who’d argued with the Coalition liaison the day before.

”Regent Halvorsen,” Suresh murmured, appearing at Ethan’s side, clipboard already in hand despite the hour. ”Instance-9’s acting head of state, in Malachar’s absence. She arrived through an emergency corridor about twenty minutes ago.”

”Great,” Ethan muttered. ”What’s she want.”

He got his answer before Suresh could offer one, the Regent’s voice carrying clearly across the courtyard the moment she spotted him.

”Ethan Verma,” she said, no honorifics, no diplomatic softening. ”You will formally withdraw your world’s involvement in the Grinding, and you will use whatever influence you carry with the Coalition to have our king’s candidacy revoked, or Instance-9 will consider Earth directly responsible for whatever befalls him.”

Ethan blinked, genuinely thrown. ”I didn’t put him in the Grinding. He registered himself, voluntarily, before I even knew this thing existed.”

”He registered himself,” Halvorsen said, ”after meeting you. After hearing about the exhale, the leaderboard, the sighing incident your world apparently finds amusing enough to have merchandise for. Malachar Vess spent a decade building a stable, unified Instance specifically so no single person’s recklessness could threaten it. And now, after less than a day in your company, he’s volunteered himself directly into the one process capable of unmaking everything he built.”

Ethan felt the accusation land with more weight than he expected, some genuine uncertainty creeping in behind his usual deadpan composure. ”You think I talked him into this.”

”I think,” Halvorsen said, ”that whatever conversation you had with him down in that archive changed something. He returned different. Quieter. Questioning decisions he hasn’t questioned in years. My advisors are already asking whether Instance-9’s unity can survive its king second-guessing himself at the exact moment a multiversal tournament is testing whether he can hold together at all.”

[NOTICE: The system would like to note, quietly, that this accusation is not entirely without merit. The conversation between the subject and Malachar Vess yesterday did appear to shift something in the latter’s certainty regarding his own methods of governance. Whether that shift constitutes harm or genuine growth is a value judgment the system does not believe it is equipped to make on the subject’s behalf.]

Ethan absorbed that, the weight of it sitting uncomfortably alongside everything else pressing in on this exact moment. ”I didn’t tell him to doubt himself. I asked him honest questions. If those questions shook something loose, that’s not the same as me sabotaging his world.”

”Isn’t it?” Halvorsen said. ”You built your entire reputation on refusing power, on turning down every crown offered to you. That’s a fine philosophy for a man whose world only ever needed one hero. Instance-9 needed a king who could hold an entire fractured civilization together through sheer, unwavering will. If your influence has cracked that will even slightly, the consequences won’t fall on you. They’ll fall on every person under his authority who depended on that stability.”

The courtyard had gone quiet, delegates from a dozen other worlds watching the confrontation with the particular tension of people who understood, viscerally, exactly how high the stakes of this argument actually were.

Ethan took a slow breath, choosing his next words carefully, aware that whatever he said next was going to matter considerably more than most of his usual off-the-cuff responses.

”I’m not going to withdraw anything,” he said finally. ”Not because I don’t take your concerns seriously - I do, genuinely. But I’m not the one who put your king in the Grinding, and I’m not the one who can pull him out of it either. That decision belongs to the Origin Engine now, the same way mine does. If you want someone to blame for that, you’re aiming at the wrong target.”

”Then what would you have me do,” Halvorsen said, some of her composed fury cracking into something closer to genuine desperation, ”watch my king walk into something that might unmake him, with no recourse, no leverage, nothing to protect the world he sacrificed everything to stabilize?”

Ethan looked at her for a long moment, understanding, finally, that the ultimatum wasn’t really about blame at all. It was about fear, the same specific, cornered fear he’d seen from a dozen other delegations over the past two weeks, dressed up in accusation because accusation felt more actionable than helplessness.

”I can’t promise he comes back unchanged,” Ethan said quietly. ”Nobody can promise that, about anyone going into this. But I watched him yesterday, and I don’t think what shook loose in him was weakness. I think it was the first honest moment he’s let himself have in years, and honestly, Regent — if the Grinding’s actually testing whether someone can hold onto who they are under pressure, I’d bet on the version of him I met yesterday a lot more than I’d bet on the one who’s spent a decade convincing himself that control and care are the same thing.”

Halvorsen stared at him for a long, silent moment, the courtyard holding its breath around them.

”That is not the reassurance I came here for,” she said finally, quieter now.

”No,” Ethan agreed. ”But it’s the honest one. I think you’d rather have that than a promise I can’t actually keep.”

The Instance-9 delegation withdrew an hour later, no formal resolution reached, but the immediate tension defused enough that Halvorsen agreed, at Suresh’s careful diplomatic urging, to at least wait for the trial’s outcome before escalating any further threats against Earth’s standing with the Coalition.

Ethan watched them go, exhausted in a way that had nothing to do with the two hours of broken sleep he’d managed, and found Kaia waiting for him near the terminal’s entrance, her expression carrying a weight he recognized immediately.

”You did good,” she said. ”Better than good, honestly.”

”Didn’t feel like it,” Ethan admitted.

[NOTICE: The system would like to interrupt this moment, reluctantly, with something it has been holding since the confrontation began, uncertain of the appropriate time to raise it given everything else unfolding.]

Ethan glanced up, already bracing. ”What now.”

[The countdown to the first trial has continued uninterrupted throughout this entire confrontation. The system estimates the subject has approximately forty minutes remaining before the trial commences.]

[NOTICE: It would also like to note something it only just detected, cross-referencing the timing of Regent Halvorsen’s ultimatum against the Grinding’s own archival activity. The confrontation was not, as it initially assumed, simply unfortunate coincidental timing.]

Ethan felt his stomach tighten. ”You’re saying it wasn’t a coincidence.”

[The system believes, based on the pattern it observed, that the Origin Engine may have deliberately allowed - or possibly even engineered - this confrontation to occur in the final hours before the trial began.]

[If that is correct, the system does not yet know whether the intent was simply to test the subject’s composure under pressure one final time, or whether the confrontation itself is somehow already the beginning of the Anchor trial, folded seamlessly into what everyone present assumed was ordinary, unrelated chaos.]
