Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

Nobody moved for a long moment after the notification faded, the four of them - five, counting Arjun, seated and blurred at the base of the great bronze structure - standing in the shifting, patient quiet of a place that had just quietly conscripted two more people into a tournament it had never bothered to ask permission for.

It was Ethan who finally broke the silence, mostly because someone had to and everyone else seemed frozen in their own particular flavor of dread.

”Okay,” he said. ”We’ve got seventy-two hours before the first trial. That’s not a lot of time, but it’s not nothing either. I’d rather spend some of it actually understanding what I’m walking into than standing here staring at a notification.”

Malachar’s expression, still guarded, shifted into something marginally more cooperative. ”Agreed. Whatever quarrel we have, Verma, it can wait until after we both survive whatever’s coming.”

”Didn’t say we had a quarrel,” Ethan said. ”Just said I think you’re wrong about a few things.”

”Noted,” Malachar said, dry. ”I think the same of you. We’ll table it.”

They settled, eventually, into an uneasy sort of camp near the base of the structure, Sundari staying close to Arjun, Kaia keeping watch at the perimeter with the careful vigilance of someone whose entire life had trained her for exactly this kind of uncertainty. Ethan found himself, somewhat against his own expectations, sitting across from Malachar Vess, the two of them the only ones with enough combat experience at this exact scale to have anything useful to compare notes on.

”Tell me about your world,” Ethan said, mostly to fill the waiting silence with something other than dread. ”Not the unification part. Before that.”

Malachar was quiet for a moment, studying Ethan like he was trying to determine whether the question was a trap. Eventually, he answered anyway.

”Chaos,” he said. ”For the first two years of our apocalypse, every faction fought every other faction as much as they fought the monsters. My family’s guild controlled a single city district. We lost it in the third month, along with most of my family.”

Ethan didn’t say anything, just let him continue.

”I was the only one who survived the siege that took it,” Malachar said. ”I remember standing in the wreckage, understanding very clearly that the only reason we’d lost wasn’t lack of strength. It was lack of unity. A hundred guilds fighting a hundred separate wars against the same threat, none of them willing to subordinate their own ambitions long enough to actually win.”

”So you decided to be the one who forced that unity,” Ethan said quietly.

”I decided,” Malachar said, ”that if nobody else was going to make the hard choice, I would. I spent a decade grinding every dungeon, every Calamity, every scrap of power my Instance’s system would give me, and I used every ounce of it to bring every remaining faction under one authority. Mine. Not because I wanted to rule. Because I’d watched what happened when nobody ruled at all, and I decided that outcome was worse than anything I’d have to become to prevent it.”

Ethan sat with that for a long moment, the weight of it landing differently than he expected - not as justification, exactly, but as something closer to genuine, hard-earned conviction, the kind that didn’t come from cruelty so much as from grief that had curdled into something rigid.

”I get it,” Ethan said finally. ”I do. I’ve watched what unchecked chaos does too. I watched an entire planet’s defense lines collapse in under an hour when the Framework decided to reset everything at once. I understand the impulse to want to be the one thing standing between people and that outcome.”

”But you didn’t take the throne when it was offered,” Malachar said. ”You had it. Multiple times, from what the Coalition’s briefings say. You could have unified your own world the same way I unified mine, and instead you gave a speech in a bathrobe and went back to sleep.”

”Yeah,” Ethan admitted. ”Because the second I actually hold that kind of authority permanently, I stop being someone people can push back against if I get it wrong. You said it yourself - you didn’t want to rule, you just decided nobody else would make the hard choice. But once you’re the one making every hard choice, forever, who tells you when you’ve made the wrong one?”

Malachar’s jaw tightened, the question clearly landing somewhere he didn’t have a comfortable answer for.

”My people are safe,” he said, quieter now, less certain than before. ”Fed. Sheltered. The monster incursions in my Instance dropped by ninety percent within the first year of unification.”

”I believe you,” Ethan said. ”I’m not saying you didn’t save lives. I think you probably did, genuinely. I’m just asking - when’s the last time somebody in your world told you no, and you actually listened?”

The question sat between them for a long, uncomfortable moment, Malachar’s composed, unyielding expression cracking, just slightly, around the edges.

”There’s no one left who would,” he said finally, quietly. ”Not because I silenced them. Because after enough time, people stop believing ’no’ is a word that still means anything when they say it to someone like us.”

Ethan felt something in his chest tighten at that - recognition, maybe, of a version of himself that could’ve existed if he’d made even one different choice somewhere along the way.

”That’s the part that scares me most about all this,” Ethan admitted. ”Not the power. Not even the Grinding, honestly. It’s that. Waking up one day and realizing everyone around me’s stopped actually telling me the truth, because they’ve decided it doesn’t matter what they say, I’ll do what I want regardless.”

Malachar looked at him for a long moment, something shifting behind his composed exterior - not agreement, exactly, but the first real crack in a certainty he’d apparently carried, unchallenged, for years.

”You asked me why I chose this,” he said slowly. ”Why I registered for the Grinding voluntarily. I told you it was because I believed I’d earned the right to compete for whatever authority the seat represents. That’s true. But it’s not the whole truth.”

”What’s the rest of it,” Ethan asked.

”I registered,” Malachar said, ”because for the first time since I unified my Instance, something exists that I cannot simply order into compliance. Something that will test me regardless of my rank, my title, or how many people call me king. I think, somewhere beneath everything I’ve built myself into, I wanted exactly that. Something that couldn’t be talked around, couldn’t be intimidated, couldn’t simply agree with me because disagreeing had become too dangerous.”

Ethan sat with that admission, the raw honesty of it landing heavier than anything Malachar had said since they’d met.

”That’s the first thing you’ve said,” Ethan said quietly, ”that actually sounds like you, instead of the throne you built around yourself.”

Malachar didn’t answer that directly, but something in his posture eased, just slightly, the rigid, unyielding certainty softening into something more uncertain and, paradoxically, more human.

[NOTICE: The system would like to interject, having monitored this exchange closely, with an observation it believes relevant to what’s coming in the next seventy-two hours.]

Ethan glanced over. ”Go ahead.”

[The system has been quietly analyzing the archival sky’s ongoing scroll throughout this conversation, and it has noticed something it initially dismissed as ambient noise but now believes is significant - the text has been responding, subtly, to the emotional register of the conversation happening beneath it. Slowing during moments of genuine vulnerability. Accelerating during moments of posturing or defensiveness.]

[The system believes this may be a clue about the nature of the ”continuity integrity” testing Arjun described earlier - that the Grinding is not measuring raw power at all, but something closer to honesty. Whether a candidate can remain genuinely, vulnerably themselves under pressure, rather than retreating into whatever armored version of themselves they’ve built to survive.]

Ethan glanced up at the vast, scrolling sky, then back at Malachar, sitting across from him now with considerably less of the cold, unyielding certainty he’d arrived with.

”If that’s true,” Ethan said slowly, ”then this conversation we just had might matter more going into the first trial than anything either of us could’ve trained for.”

Malachar looked at him for a long moment, something almost like reluctant respect settling into his expression.

”Then perhaps,” he said, ”it’s fortunate we ended up seated across from each other instead of at each other’s throats.”
