Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The courtyard emptied slowly over the next hour, delegations retreating to their respective camps in a haze of exhaustion and unresolved tension, but Ethan didn’t move from where he’d been standing when the Origin Engine made its offer. He just stood there, staring up at the ordinary night sky that had, hours earlier, been replaced entirely by scrolling archival text, now returned to nothing more than stars.

”Seven days,” he said finally, mostly to himself.

”Seven days,” Suresh confirmed, appearing at his side with two cups of tea, handing one over without being asked. ”You should sleep on it before you try to think it through properly.”

”I don’t think sleep’s gonna make this simpler,” Ethan admitted, taking the cup gratefully anyway. ”It’s not even a yes-or-no question, really. It’s more like - what does the yes actually look like, if I say it? Nobody’s explained that part. Everyone keeps talking around ’the seat’ like it’s self-evident what it means, and I still don’t actually know.”

Suresh considered that. ”Then maybe that’s where you start. Not deciding yet. Just understanding.”

He spent the next morning doing exactly that, tracking down everyone who might have a clearer picture than he did of what the restructured role would actually require, starting with Arjun, who he found near the excavation site, more solid now than Ethan had ever seen him, sitting with Sundari in comfortable, easy quiet.

”I need you to be straight with me,” Ethan said, sitting down across from them. ”What does the job actually look like. Not the philosophy. The practical, day-to-day version of it.”

Arjun considered the question carefully. ”Honestly? I never got far enough into it to know for certain. I refused before I ever properly took on any responsibilities. What I can tell you is what the old version demanded - full, continuous awareness spread across every Instance simultaneously, decisions made constantly, without rest, without delegation. That’s what dissolved Voren. That’s what nearly took me before I ever accepted anything.”

”And the new version? The one I proposed?”

”That’s the part nobody actually knows yet,” Sundari said. ”Because it’s never existed before. You didn’t just refuse the old role, Ethan. You proposed inventing a new one, on the spot, in the middle of an argument. Nobody’s built the actual mechanics of it. That’s still ahead of you, if you say yes.”

Ethan sat with that, the weight of it settling uncomfortably. ”So I’d be saying yes to a job that doesn’t have a job description yet.”

”Essentially,” Arjun said. ”Though I’d argue that’s true of most meaningful things people say yes to. Nobody hands you a full manual before you decide to build a sanctuary out of a run-down apartment building either.”

He found Malachar next, mid-afternoon, working through a training session with a group of Citadel volunteers, and pulled him aside once the session ended.

”You ran an entire Instance,” Ethan said. ”Not the multiverse, obviously, but a whole world’s worth of stability, alone, for a decade. What would you tell me, if I asked you honestly whether a role like this is survivable?”

Malachar considered the question with more care than Ethan expected, wiping sweat from his brow before answering. ”I’d tell you the version I built wasn’t survivable. You’ve seen what it cost me. But I’d also tell you the version I built was built entirely alone, by someone who didn’t trust anyone else enough to share the weight. If the structure you’re proposing genuinely requires a council - actual people with actual authority to tell you no - then it’s not the same thing I built. It’s the thing I wish I’d built instead.”

”That’s not really an answer,” Ethan said.

”No,” Malachar agreed. ”Because I don’t think anyone can give you a clean answer to this, Ethan. I think the honest truth is that nobody’s ever tried the version you’re proposing before, and the only way to actually know if it’s survivable is to build it and find out.”

By evening, Ethan had talked to nearly everyone whose judgment he trusted - Priya, blunt and practical, worried mostly about logistics and whether the Citadel itself would survive his attention being split across an entire multiverse; Kael and Ren, both offering quiet, steady support without pushing him either direction; even Devan Rao, who’d stayed on at the Citadel longer than his original delegation ever intended, offering the earnest, uncomplicated perspective of someone who still, despite everything, believed in Ethan’s judgment more than his own uncertainty.

It was Suresh, finally, at the very end of the day, who asked the question none of the others had quite managed to put into words.

”What do you actually want,” he said. ”Not what’s right. Not what’s owed to six thousand worlds. What do you, personally, actually want to do with the next several years of your life?”

Ethan sat with that question longer than any of the others, staring out at the quiet, settling courtyard - the World Tree, the tea golem parked in its usual spot, the sanctuary he’d built almost entirely by accident out of stubbornness and a refusal to let the people he cared about get hurt.

”I want this,” he said finally, quietly. ”I want mornings that don’t require saving anyone. I want tea that doesn’t come with a countdown attached. I want to watch Malachar figure out who he is without a throne, and watch Kael and Ren build whatever they’re building together, and watch the golem keep going viral for reasons that have nothing to do with apocalypses.”

”That’s not an answer to whether you’ll take the seat,” Suresh said gently.

”No,” Ethan admitted. ”But I think it’s the answer to how I’d have to do it, if I ever said yes. Not instead of this. Alongside it. If the job actually requires me to give up the Citadel, the tea, the naps, the small, stupid, specific things that make me who I am - then the answer’s no, regardless of how many worlds are counting on the alternative.”

Suresh nodded slowly, something settling in his expression. ”Then maybe that’s the actual question you need answered before the seven days are up. Not whether the job is survivable in theory. Whether it’s survivable specifically alongside everything you already have.”

[NOTICE: The system, quiet for most of the day’s conversations, would like to interject with something it has been compiling in the background - a piece of information it believes directly relevant to that exact question.]

Ethan glanced up. ”What.”

[NOTICE: While the subject has spent today gathering perspective from everyone he trusts, the system has spent it attempting to determine, technically, whether the proposed steward role could actually be performed without requiring full-time, continuous presence at the Deep Layer - the way the old role apparently demanded.]

”And?”

[NOTICE: It has found something in the terminal’s deepest archive it did not expect - a fragment suggesting the original architecture, before centuries of accumulated tradition calcified it into something more rigid, was designed to be delegable. Distributed. The single-seat, single-authority model wasn’t foundational to the system’s actual code. It was a choice made by whoever held the seat first, generations before even Arjun’s Instance existed, and every subsequent holder simply inherited the assumption without questioning it.]

Ethan felt something shift in his chest at that - not certainty, not relief exactly, but the first genuine crack of possibility in a decision that had, until this exact moment, felt entirely binary.

”So the job doesn’t have to look like what everyone assumes it looks like,” he said slowly.

[NOTICE: That is the system’s current assessment, yes. It would recommend the subject spend the remaining six days exploring exactly what a delegable, distributed version of this role might actually require - because if that theory holds, the choice in front of him may not be nearly as impossible as everyone, including the Origin Engine itself, currently assumes.]
