Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK

The courtyard convened within twenty minutes, every delegation still present for the ongoing negotiations pulled from sleep or evening routines by the same urgent notification, and Ethan stood at the center of it, feeling the weight of an unfinished structure suddenly, brutally tested before it was ready.

”Give me the details,” he said, addressing the system directly, the gathered crowd falling quiet to listen.

[NOTICE: The failing Instance is designated 19-Marrow. Population approximately 6.3 million. Their own Framework’s core architecture began destabilizing roughly forty minutes ago - the pattern matches Instance 8-Velir’s collapse closely enough that the system considers this a near-certain repeat of the same catastrophic failure, unless intervention occurs within the next several hours.]

”Why weren’t they part of the negotiations,” Ethan asked. ”You said they abstained. Why?”

[NOTICE: The system has pulled their registration history. Instance 19-Marrow’s own governing Framework voted against participation in the Watch’s founding process, citing distrust of any restructured centralized authority following centuries of what their records describe as ”exploitative administrative practices” under the old system.]

The implication landed heavily across the gathered courtyard. A world that had explicitly refused to trust the new structure was now, within weeks of that refusal, the first to need it.

”That complicates things,” the Instance 12-Kesh envoy said carefully. ”If we intervene in a world that formally rejected the Watch’s authority, we set a precedent of imposing help regardless of consent. If we don’t intervene, we allow another Instance 8-Velir to unfold while we debate procedure.”

”There’s no version of this where we let six million people die because of a procedural technicality,” Ethan said flatly. ”I don’t care what precedent that sets. We’re going.”

”We don’t have a formal mandate yet,” Malachar pointed out, though his tone carried none of his old, rigid certainty -just genuine, careful concern. ”The charter isn’t ratified. If we act now, unilaterally, we risk becoming exactly what Instance 19-Marrow feared in the first place - an authority that shows up uninvited and imposes itself regardless of local consent.”

Ethan felt the tension of the dilemma settle heavily, the same impossible weight he’d carried through the Anchor trial’s constructed choice weeks earlier, except this time real, immediate, with a clock actually running.

It was Arjun, watching the debate unfold, who finally offered a path through it.

”Send a request, not an intervention,” he said. ”Formally ask Instance 19-Marrow’s remaining leadership whether they want help, framed clearly as optional, with no strings attached to future participation in the Watch. If they say yes, you go. If they say no, you respect it, even knowing what that choice might cost them. That’s the difference between the old system and what you’re trying to build - the old system never actually asked.”

Ethan nodded slowly, the shape of it settling into something he could actually stand behind. ”Send the request. Now. We don’t have time to wait long, but we’re not showing up uninvited.”

The response came back within minutes, relayed through the system’s emergency channel, carrying a voice ragged with exhaustion and fear.

”This is acting-Chancellor Meret of Instance 19-Marrow. We - yes. Please. Whatever help you can offer, we’ll take it. I don’t care about the politics anymore. I just want my people to survive the next few hours.”

Ethan felt something settle in his chest at the desperate honesty of it - not triumph, not vindication, just the simple, human relief of someone finally allowed to ask for help without pretense.

”Okay,” Ethan said, turning to the gathered courtyard. ”We’re going. I need volunteers who can actually help stabilize a failing Framework core, not just fight - this isn’t a combat situation, not primarily. Kaia, your world’s dealt with corridor stability work before. Sundari, you’ve got centuries of experience with this exact kind of architecture. Arjun-”

”I’m coming,” Arjun said, before Ethan could finish asking. ”I’ve spent centuries avoiding exactly this kind of responsibility. I’d like to actually be useful with what’s left of me, for once.”

Malachar stepped forward as well. ”I’ve stabilized fractured systems before, even if the scale’s different. I can help.”

The corridor opened within the hour, the terminal’s golden light stretching wide enough to accommodate the small, hastily assembled team, and Ethan stepped through it with a weight in his chest that felt entirely different from every prior crisis this story had thrown at him - not the confidence of overwhelming power, but the far more uncertain territory of trying to build something that actually worked, in real time, with real consequences, before it had ever been properly tested.

Instance 19-Marrow’s sky, when they arrived, was already fracturing - not the total collapse Instance 8-Velir had suffered, but close, hairline cracks spreading across the atmosphere with the same sickly gold-violet light that had once haunted Earth’s own crisis with the Framework’s admin gates.

Chancellor Meret met them at the corridor’s exit point, a woman who looked considerably older than her actual years, exhaustion carved into every line of her face.

”Thank you,” she said, voice unsteady. ”I know we refused you. I know that makes this-”

”Doesn’t matter right now,” Ethan said. ”Tell us what’s happening to your Framework’s core. We need specifics, fast.”

Meret led them through a city on the edge of panic, streets full of people staring anxiously at the widening cracks overhead, toward a central administrative structure that reminded Ethan uncomfortably of the vault beneath his own courtyard, except cracked, straining, gold-violet light bleeding erratically from fractures in its ancient stone.

”It started collapsing from the inside,” Meret explained, breathless. ”Our own Framework administrators tried emergency stabilization protocols, the same ones that worked during smaller incidents in the past. This time, nothing held. We don’t know why.”

[NOTICE: The system has begun analyzing the failure pattern directly. It believes it understands the cause, and the news is not encouraging.]

Ethan glanced over sharply. ”Tell me.”

[NOTICE: This Instance’s Framework architecture is old - considerably older than Earth’s own, closer in age to some of the network’s earliest deployments. The system believes centuries of accumulated administrative strain, combined with the recent disruption caused by the Origin Engine’s own restructuring efforts, triggered a cascading failure the old architecture was never designed to withstand.]

[NOTICE: In simpler terms - the Watch’s very creation, the restructuring the multiverse voted for weeks ago, may have destabilized older, more fragile systems that were barely holding together under the previous structure.]

Ethan felt the weight of that land with brutal, uncomfortable clarity.

”You’re saying this is happening because of what we started,” he said slowly. ”The restructuring itself might be causing collapses like this.”

[NOTICE: The system cannot confirm causation with certainty. But the timing, and the failure pattern’s similarity to Instance 8-Velir’s own collapse - which occurred shortly after the Grinding’s initial announcement - suggests a troubling possibility.]

[NOTICE: Every step toward building something better may be placing unprecedented strain on the oldest, most fragile parts of a system that was never designed to change this quickly.]

Sundari, standing nearby, absorbed that grim possibility with visible unease. ”If that’s true, Instance 19-Marrow won’t be the last. There could be dozens more Instances like this one, old and fragile, caught in the same cascading strain, right now, across the entire network.”

Ethan looked up at the widening cracks overhead, six million people’s lives hanging on whatever they managed to do in the next several hours, and felt the true, staggering scope of what he’d started weeks ago in a courtyard argument finally settle over him with its full, unavoidable weight.

”Then we’d better figure out how to stabilize this one,” he said, ”fast, and figure out exactly how many more of these are waiting for us before this gets a lot worse.”
