Starting Off Survival With A Small Treehouse

Chapter 1017: Chapter 568: The Secret Within the Dome

Wei Shishi’s words left Xu Ying and Li Wenxi stunned for two seconds, then they exchanged a glance.

On the other end of the call, Wei Shishi said nothing more.

”Are you saying that Wei Bai... had a drastic change in temperament and also experienced amnesia?” Xu Ying swallowed and asked cautiously.

”...No, I was mistaken,” Wei Shishi suddenly corrected herself. ”Grandfather did go through a period of depression and a drastic change in temperament, but that was because of my parents’ death. There’s a reason for Grandfather’s changes.”

”Your parents...” Xu Ying opened her mouth.

”I’m sorry for bringing up something so sad,” Li Wenxi apologized.

”It was a long time ago, and I was only five years old at the time,” Wei Shishi said with surprisingly no sadness in her voice. ”I can hardly remember my parents’ faces.”

Xu Ying suddenly understood.

No wonder...

She had thought it was strange why Wei Bai, an old man in his seventies or eighties, would still be in charge.

The Wei Family is one of the major military families, and the Patriarch of the Wei Family bears enormous responsibilities and workload.

So for Wei Bai to still be in the role at such an age, it was truly a display of dedication.

Moreover, when meeting to discuss serious matters, he would bring along his granddaughter, who was only in her twenties.

It turns out it was because...

The next heir died?

”Grandfather only had one son, and that was my father. My parents’ death was a huge blow to him, so it was normal for him to have a drastic change in personality,” Wei Shishi said softly.

”Mm, certainly,” Xu Ying agreed that Wei Bai probably had no issue.

After all, she had interacted with Wei Bai face-to-face, and from her perspective, Wei Bai was an absolutely normal person.

He was neither a mutated human nor a genetically modified human; his physical capabilities were within the range of normal humans.

However...

Some things can’t be taken lightly.

Though Xu Ying didn’t think Wei Bai had any problems, it was necessary to make sure.

Hmm, it’s better to have a conversation with Wei Bai about the events fifty years ago, to see what he still remembers.

But, the matter of Wei Shishi’s parents’ deaths intrigued her.

”Well...” Xu Ying hesitated for a moment but still asked, ”May I ask how your parents passed away? According to what you said before, over the decades, mutated creatures haven’t been attacking human settlements anymore; you all should have been safe...”

”There was simply no external invasion,” Wei Shishi’s tone remained calm. ”In the absence of outside enemies, the biggest enemy of humans is themselves.”

”Ah, I see...”

This is indeed true.

In the days a millennium ago when humans were the absolute rulers of Earth, when other creatures couldn’t harm humans, the biggest enemy of humans was indeed themselves.

From personal feuds to national interests, unnatural deaths were extremely common.

”This...”

Xu Ying wanted to inquire more about the details.

It’s known that Wei Shishi’s parents should have been the next Patriarch of the Wei Family.

For ordinary people, it might not be significant, but the successor of the Wei Family holds a prominent status in the entire underground human settlement, receiving tight protection. If they died, it likely wasn’t due to an accident but rather someone...

Premeditated murder?

However, just as she was about to ask about the details, Wei Shishi spoke up.

”I’ve marked the area range you mentioned; our people are already heading there, and I’ll be there shortly too.”

Wei Shishi didn’t continue on the previous topic but became cold and focused on handling business.

”Ah, okay. Are you coming too? Haven’t you rested tonight?” Xu Ying asked.

”I already slept for an hour, that’s enough. Let’s confirm what you’ve discovered first.” With that, there was a dial tone from the other side.

Xu Ying and Li Wenxi exchanged glances.

”Hung up so fast,” Xu Ying commented, curling her mouth.

Never mind, asking such things over the phone felt off.

I’d better find a chance to ask in person when we meet.

”Do you think the grandfather really has a problem?” Li Wenxi asked worriedly.

”Him? I don’t see any problem with him,” Xu Ying admitted truthfully.

The change in Wei Bai’s personality is indeed substantial from back then.

But it’s not abnormal.

Given that fifty years have passed.

He was young and impetuous back then, and after fifty years, he became more stable, which seemed normal to Xu Ying.

Moreover, during their conversations, she could still sense his nature from back then.

So, she felt Wei Bai should be fine.

But the death of the Wei Family’s heir...

There must be something strange about it!

It might have connections to those lackeys, and perhaps Wei Bai knows something.

Wait a minute...

Looking at it this way, perhaps Wei Bai has some connections with those lackeys...

”Oh, my head’s about to burst!” Xu Ying grumbled as she rubbed her head, she wasn’t good at analyzing these things, ”Let’s first get over there and meet with Wei Shishi.”

”Okay.”

When the two women arrived at the area, they found it was already being cordoned off.

”So fast,” Li Wenxi remarked in surprise.

At the same time, she spotted Wei Shishi.

The two of them walked over without being stopped.

Wei Shishi had just finished assigning tasks to the last team, and the group, equipped with professional tools and fully armed, dispersed.
