Surviving The Fourth Calamity

Chapter 453: Chapter 252: Put on a Show! The Undead Tribe is Watching!

Outside Central City, one could only apply for land through William, and most mages knew they lacked the qualifications.

Those who dared to ask were probably among the few who could separate from Draculus with eligibility.

They would only seek William.

However, Hill guessed that William wouldn’t care, those who came late had no right to clamor.

Let them compete with Draculus! Having shared the pot for so long, it would be normal for them to keep scrambling for a portion.

A person of William’s temperament wouldn’t hold the Mage Association in high regard, let alone offer them any extra favors.

As for the other mages seeking out Adrian, it could only be for the residential rights within Central City.

”Are they looking for you just because they want residences in Central City?” Hill summarized Adrian’s words and could only guess as much.

Hill doubted his own overthinking, as the nobles of Saral were spending big bucks buying land to build their houses on.

Would these mages actually dare to ask Adrian directly?

Did they still think that the King of Saral would provide for the mages?

The Saral of today is no longer the past where even a junior mage was treasured.

Just a few years ago, Hill’s stepfather, Count Pelast, didn’t understand what a mage could do, and that was the case for most nobles.

In their minds, when assessing a mage, they would merely one rank higher.

Most of the Salal nobility knew only that mages were strong and precious, but they couldn’t grasp why.

But now it’s different, the King’s Academy graduates thousands of mages a year.

Even if they lack talent and can’t advance further, ordinary cities don’t need that many high-level mages, they have enough.

And the most recent graduates from the King’s Academy, the nobles almost all paid double the price to snatch them away from their own king.

They can’t engage in illegal deals anymore and can only rely on having more mages to find profitable professions.

Most of the mages who graduate from the King’s Academy are skilled in Alchemy.

Training high-level mages might take time, but time is something Saral has in plenty.

The people from the Mage Association likely hadn’t looked into the current state of Saral yet, which is why they acted so foolishly. They’ll understand when they finally notice something’s amiss and look back for the reasons.

Fortunately, Adrian wasn’t involved in this matter; it was all handled by William alone.

”Correct.” Adrian nodded and said, ”I now believe that the kings are so wary of them because of their attitude of superiority.

The world has changed, and yet they live in the past.

Mages should be the most sensitive to changes in the world! How can they not see them?

The pride of a mage comes from the control and utilization of laws, not from regarding ordinary people as ants!

What makes them think that I would grant privileges to a bunch of people on bad terms with each other under the nose of the King of Saral?

The King of Saral values who is useful to his rule, not that anyone who is a mage can be above everyone else.

They are facing deities!

Draculus is but one, and although he is fearless, he wouldn’t offend the deities lightly!

A bunch of fools risking their own life!

Just because they are legendary, they think they can direct and instruct me, a magister—it’s wishful thinking!

Luckily, I found it bothersome at the beginning and never took over. It’s all managed by His Majesty the King’s people.”

Hill laughed, ”Even if it were up to Uncle Adrian, he wouldn’t just give it to them for nothing! Why should he? What’s so great about being legendary? Do they dare to lay a hand on you?”

The real legendary mages have long gone to share the spoils with Draculus; these ignorant ones are just ordinary legends.

They only followed because they saw Draculus and the others so eager about Central City, following without knowing what to grab, which makes their actions a bit foolish.

”So many legendary mages with rigid minds suddenly thrown out by Draculus—I wonder how much trouble they’ll cause.” Adrian said with a stern face, ”That man, really refuses to take any responsibility.”

Hill shook his head, ”As for that man, just ignore him and all will be well.

My maternal grandfather said he seems interested in souls these years and enjoys manipulating people’s hearts.

If he suddenly acts this way, he must have some purpose; don’t get involved with him.

If Uncle Adrian finds it troublesome, he could stay with me. His Majesty the King will soon have a solution out.

Pay attention these next few days, see if the Undead Tribe is getting impatient.

If they keep causing chaos like this, it’s likely the Undead will turn hostile soon.

Though most of the Undead are now in the Dwarf Kingdom, if something does happen, they can return quickly.”

Adrian paused, ”You mean, they would choose to come back even if it means dying again?”

”The Undead are always passionate and eccentric in their ways. Tired of fighting with Dwarves, it would be just right for them to come back for a change of pace.” Hill laughed, ”They are all staying in Central City, so the chances of encountering them are high.

To the Undead, there’s no professional distinction; Sky Knights and magisters are seen as equal.

If these mages continue their haughty attitudes, a clash is inevitable.

And with these mages, the Undead certainly won’t be as courteous as they are to the Salal nobility.”

”His Majesty the King hasn’t been dealing with it these past few days?”

Adrian silently nodded.

”So, it depends on what His Majesty the King wants to do,” Hill curled his lips, ”As long as they don’t provoke the King, he would still think that the affairs of the dwarves are more important. What a pity.”

Adrian shook his head, ”Haven’t you had enough of the recent excitement?”

”Excitement from the elves?” Hill said with disdain, ”Isn’t that the selection event for the Elven God King’s consort?

I also know that the power transition in the Forest of the Elves is definitely not as superficial as this facade of changing wives.

Who knows how many struggles have occurred internally, how many elves have died before such a sudden outbreak.

But it does look very uncomfortable. When the elves cause trouble, can’t they avoid using the excuse of men and women?”

”The business with the Dark Moon Elves isn’t even worth mentioning now, they’re about to leave the Half-Elf Kingdom, aren’t they?”

”It seems they have already set out,” Adrian glanced outside the window, ”Don’t you have a good view from here?

The Queen should be coronated tomorrow.

No matter the reason, for that Divine King, getting a beautiful wife is always a good thing.”

”I’m not interested in something you would know with just a thought. They won’t let humans see that coronation ceremony anyway,” Hill remembered, ”But there’s someone who wants to ask you something?”

Adrian turned his head, giving Hill a questioning look with his eyes.

”Rettel Muen,” Hill pointed outside, ”He’s been watching the commotion out there lately, and I heard he’s very dissatisfied with the Mage Association.”

”The last one before you to be played by the Mage Association’s games, the Legendary Laws, was him,” Adrian immediately remembered who it was, ”He has a friend who is now legendary, too.

When he was a Magister, he was just an ordinary Chapter president of the Mage Association, then someone wanted to be parachuted in, so they played dirty tricks on him.

Rettel Muen tried to stand up for his friend and struck out, but ran into an idiot. God knows what he did, but he tried to blast Rettel Muen and his friend to death, and ended up blowing himself up.”

”It wasn’t until later that they found out Rettel Muen was also an Alchemist Master; it was a game he was already done playing.

When he became Legendary Laws, the idiot’s seniors set up a series of traps for him.

He was decisive, killed all the people dispatched by the Mage Association, and then went into hiding.

His friend ran with him and later also became legendary. Although not as strong as Rettel Muen, his deterrence was sufficient.

No one would take on two legends at the same time for the sake of a dead idiot.

They didn’t plan to do much, although they never accepted any trials from the Mage Association, they just lived in seclusion and stayed out of worldly affairs.”

”So he has come out again!

Of course, the Mage Association has disbanded.”

”He plans to settle in Central City,” Hill reminded casually, ”Uncle Adrian, you’d better prepare early.

I don’t think he’s someone who knows how to be patient and not strike first.”

Adrian’s face changed, ”I need to discuss this with His Majesty the King.

I originally thought they wanted to stay close by, to enjoy the spectacle of the Forest of the Elves.

But from what you say, these people want to settle down?

I thought the legendary mages of the Mage Association were coming with Draculus.

But these reclusive legends have come over too, even willing to risk being attacked by dwarves?

If they really do settle in Central City, then they ought to help guard the city!”

He pondered for a moment and couldn’t help but glance at Hill, ”Is this something you only learn about when you become a legend?”

Hill tentatively spoke, finding that he wasn’t prevented from speaking out, ”The name Central City doesn’t refer to the center of this region, but to the center of the entire world.

Your maternal grandfather agreed so readily to you becoming the City Lord here because of this too.

This is the place closest to the world consciousness.

Staying here for a few more years indeed has its benefits.”

Adrian was surprised, ”In that case, why appoint me as City Lord? Wouldn’t the Saral nobility be more suited?”

”That’s exactly why you were appointed City Lord, and that Belter can only be your deputy,” Hill said with a resigned smile, ”Look at the performance of those people from the Mage Association now.

If the City Lord were not a high-level mage, but just a Grand Knight, what would we do if they really caused trouble?

Their disdain for other professions is genuine.

They might not even consider His Majesty the King’s retribution.

For tens of thousands of years, they’ve become accustomed to it.

His Majesty the King probably has no interest in using his own people to give them a bloody lesson.

Even if revenge could follow afterward, it wouldn’t mean anything to His Majesty the King.

He doesn’t have many capable people left; dying here for the sake of a City Lord’s title would truly be meaningless.”

Adrian forced a smile, ”Even if someone dares to cause me trouble, no one would dare kill me, is that right?”

Hill gave him a look for him to understand on his own – why bother with redundant words?
