Rebirth: General, Don't Mess Around!

The father and son duo didn’t stand on ceremony with each other, and Xia Jinyuan had wanted to ask how his old man had been doing lately, as well as the health of the old masters and the Old Madam back at home. Before he could finish his inquiry, Commander Xia had answered all at once.

Holding the telephone handset, Xia Jinyuan’s expression grew pensive and cold for a moment. Sometimes it truly wasn’t that he didn’t want to have a good chat with his old man, it was that his old man really didn’t want to have a good chat with him.

The conversation hadn’t even started before he found himself at an impasse, unable to continue the chat.

So, he moved on to more serious matters.

Commander Xia didn’t realize he had cut the small talk short. Whether things were good at home, whether the elders were fine—if things weren’t alright, the son in the military wouldn’t be able to rush back anyway, so it was better to just say all was well to prevent him from worrying.

This sort of concern was just that rigid.

When it came to the Li family and the many rumors surrounding them, the most pressing issue was whether there were any problems on Ye Jian’s end.

And the problems were indeed massive.

Commander Xia then informed Xia Jinyuan that Ye Jian had been exposed. Listening intently, Xia Jinyuan’s handsome face instantly turned icy, ”How did the investigation lead to Ye Jian? How could military secrets be so easily leaked? Could there have been some mess inside?”

”No, there’s no issue on this end. The problem lies with someone else,” Commander Xia’s face also grew cold, ”Li Ronghuan has some skills; he found out about Martyr Sun Xueqing’s old comrades. Some comrades lost contact after leaving the military and had no way of knowing the twists and turns inside, much less that Li Chuhai had committed crimes. When Li Ronghuan inquired, Ye Jian’s name came up.”

”Li Ronghuan is now full of regret. He originally planned to bring the Li family down and then flee the country right away, but now due to Ye Jian, he has stayed to keep a close watch on Madam Li.”

”There’s not much of a problem on Madam Li’s side. Out of Old Master Li’s former subordinates who stood at the top of the pyramid and were caught, three are clean and above board, unable to find any wrongdoing with two of them. They are still in their original positions, clean as a whistle. Only those two remain. One of them was also your sister’s former superior, and he turned out to be the deepest hidden subordinate of Old Master Li. Before a thorough investigation, we truly had no idea that he was personally groomed by Old Master Li.”

Xia Jinyuan’s eyebrows twitched slightly, and his thin lips tightened a little, ”The one from Southern Province before?”

”Yes, that’s him.” Although it’s been over a month since the discovery, Commander Xia still felt shocked. Old Master Li truly had deep roots and lush leaves. If it hadn’t been for Li Chuhai implicating him back then, the current political landscape would probably be very different. With Old Master Li’s vision and strategy, he would have held significant power, not the situation we see today.

Old Master Li’s early retirement was the only good thing Li Chuhai ever did.

Xia Jinyuan fell silent for a while before asking, ”Very clean? Did they talk to my sister?”

Commander Xia laughed softly before answering, ”They did twice, and your sister said she was clean, with nothing to talk about. Hou Zi, however, ran into a bit of trouble. But luckily, Hou Zi is clever. Apart from mixing up with the underworld in the past, he hasn’t touched drugs or bribery—no such things. He is a smart man, handled his affairs cleanly without leaving any traces, and considering so many years have passed and he’s successfully transformed himself, he was taken in for a few days of ’tea-drinking’ and came out safe and sound.”

”Knowing his relationship with the Xia family, they informed the family before bringing him in, without alarming the two elders. Even your sister wasn’t told. To this day, the two elders are still unaware, though your sister knows and isn’t worried about it.”
