Rebirth: General, Don't Mess Around!

Ye Jian and the female soldiers were chatting, while Xia Jinyuan was talking to a Peacekeeping Special Police Captain.

Recently, an outbreak had occurred in the refugee camp, and although it was effectively controlled, many follow-up tasks had to be completed, such as gathering and destroying clothes and items worn by infected patients.

Due to limitations, the chosen method of disposal was incineration.

The destruction was carried out by the special police, and Xia Jinyuan happened to arrive just as the Peacekeeping Special Police Captain and a few special police officers were starting the fire for the destruction. Seeing Xia Jinyuan approach, the captain initially paused, then quickly came over.

”Gone for over ten days, where did you go?” the Special Police Captain asked as he patted Xia Jinyuan’s shoulder vigorously, his eyes filled with joy, ”How’s it going? Everything smooth?”

Everyone in the same Peacekeeping Camp knew each other, and they all got along well.

The Special Police Captain’s background was not simple: he came from a city in the northern border area of our country and was a member of the Northern Counterterrorism Special Police. Several years ago, Ye Jian and Weaver had just stepped off a plane when they were kidnapped by an East Turkistan extremist disguised as a taxi driver. Xia Jinyuan took part in the rescue, collaborating with the Northern Counterterrorism Special Police. However, back then the collaboration was with the sixth secret service squadron, while this captain was from the fourth squadron.

A captain who frequently performed counter-terrorism missions on the front lines knew very well that Xia Jinyuan’s sudden disappearance with his soldiers for a few days was definitely for some major operation. Now seeing Xia Jinyuan return safe and sound filled him with genuine happiness.

”Not bad, it went smoothly. Here I am, visiting you right after,” Xia Jinyuan extended his fist, and the two men greeted each other by bumping fists, ”The colonel mentioned you’ve been a bit down these past few days. What’s up, family issues?”

Upon hearing this, the Special Police Captain’s smile lessened slightly, and it took him a while to respond, ”Issues within the squad.”

Issues within the squad … Xia Jinyuan’s expression darkened.

They came from the country’s northernmost border, looking for extremists and terrorists who damaged the border, all of whom were armed. When he mentioned issues within the squad… it was mostly related to these individuals.

Seeing the Special Police Captain’s face covered in sadness and enveloped in grief, Xia Jinyuan felt a sinking feeling in his chest.

A mishap equated to… sacrifice.

”Two comrades died, the incident happened a few days ago, and I only received the news the day before yesterday,” the Special Police Captain did not hide the truth and found a place to sit down, his head bowed and hands buried in his hair, tears welling in the eyes of the iron-willed officer.

”Before we left, we had made plans that once I returned to the country, they would pick me up at the airport. They also said that I must keep on living because they were waiting for me to return and fight alongside them once again.”

”Now, here I am on an international peacekeeping mission alive, but my comrades back home are… are…”

He couldn’t continue anymore, his voice so suppressed that it seemed locked in his throat, unable to utter another word.

He was still alive, but they had sacrificed themselves.

Xia Jinyuan fell silent.

At this moment, he could most profoundly understand the Special Police Captain’s feelings for he too had once experienced the death of comrades, the agonizing pain that could shatter what he thought was an indomitable spiritual world.

”They were both very young, one was 29, the other 31. The younger one wasn’t married, the married one had just had a child at the beginning of the year. He was so busy that he wasn’t there for the birth, only managing to visit once when the child was four months old. And it was… it was only that once, just that once.”

The Special Police Captain was almost pulling all his hair out, ”The child was born in January, it’s ten months old now, and he… he… he only saw him that one time.”
