Chapter 98: Chapter 98: A Cause for Celebration! Feng Yuefang is Fired

Dejected, Luo Xiaohu walked into the Emergency Department office and presented the silk banner to Dr. Ding.

Luo Xiaohu bowed in apology. ”Dr. Ding, I was the asshole yesterday. You’re the one who saved my wife and child, yet I twisted the facts. I’m sorry.”

”I’m sorry to all the doctors here. I’m sorry for causing you so much trouble.”

Luo Xiaohu bowed once more before timidly fleeing the office. He then dutifully went and paid his wife’s hospital bill.

When Luo Xiaohu came out, a black car was parked at the main entrance of the hospital.

Luo Xiaohu walked over timidly. ”I did everything Brother Meng told me to. I apologized, and I delivered the banner. I’ll never dare to do it again. I was just led astray by Feng Yuefang. I must have been out of my mind.”

”Thank God this whole thing was kept quiet. Otherwise, I would’ve been in serious trouble.”

A man in sunglasses inside the car glanced at Luo Xiaohu. ”Don’t let me see you causing trouble at City First Hospital ever again. Now get lost.”

”Yes, yes.”

Luo Xiaohu felt as if he’d received a royal pardon.

「City First Hospital, Emergency Department.」

The previous night’s incident involving Dr. Ding had served as a wake-up call for Director Huo, prompting him to call a meeting first thing in the morning.

The topic of the meeting was how to handle cases requiring surgery when no family member was present to provide a signature.

The hospital, of course, had relevant policies in place. Normally, when a medical institution performs surgery or other special procedures, it must obtain signed consent from the patient, their family, or an authorized party. There were also comprehensive contingency plans for situations where the patient’s consent couldn’t be obtained and no family or authorized party was present.

The staff began to discuss the issue, offering their own perspectives, which included a fair share of complaints and indignation:

”For unidentified patients, the Medical Affairs Department can authorize the procedure, and we can fast-track their treatment. As long as there’s no malpractice, there’s usually no problem. Nothing to be afraid of!”

”Theoretically, yes. But what if the outcome isn’t good? Especially if you run into one of those families looking to make trouble... We’ve seen plenty of those cases!”

”It’s usually car accidents or other emergencies where the family isn’t present. The hospital acts on humanitarian grounds, authorizing the surgery to save a life. It’s perfectly reasonable and legal, but it often leads to unforeseen negative consequences... I still think we need to be cautious.”

”Exactly. Who can guarantee a perfect outcome? If the surgery is a success, fine. But if it fails, you’re almost certain to face a lawsuit.”

”That’s not all. Even if the surgery is a success, you can’t find anyone to foot the bill. It’s not uncommon for patients to refuse to pay, claiming ’I never consented to the operation.’ The hospital does all the work for nothing and just has to eat the loss.”

”Sigh... It’s a very real problem!”

”You said it. On the surface, it’s a question of ’consent first or treatment first,’ but deep down, it’s about the conflict between a doctor’s duty and the risks they have to bear...”

As they talked and re-examined the incident, a sense of helplessness and bitterness filled the room.

Ding Yue felt a pang of lingering fear.

’She hadn’t thought too much about it at the time,’ Ding Yue reflected. ’She was young, inexperienced, and had simply acted out of a doctor’s sense of duty. But the result had still left her terrified.’

’If Feng Yuefang’s news report had actually been released, things would have spiraled out of control. The pressure from public opinion would have been enough to destroy a young doctor like her.’

Feng Yuefang’s malicious intentions had caught Ding Yue, Xiao Xixi, and all the medical staff present completely off guard!

As Director Huo listened to the discussion, he could sense the negative emotions in the room.

Finally, Director Huo set the tone for the meeting by affirming and highly praising Ding Yue’s sense of responsibility and her actions.

He offered them a piece of reassurance:

”In an emergency, such as when rescuing a patient in critical condition, if it is not possible to obtain consent from the patient or their next of kin, corresponding medical measures can be implemented immediately with the approval of the head of the medical institution or an authorized supervisor.”

”Dr. Ding’s actions set an example for all of us to follow.”

”As for the family member, Luo Xiaohu, and the reporter from Fan City TV Station, Feng Yuefang—the department leadership has already handled it and resolved the potential threat. So I want all the doctors in our Emergency Department to rest assured.”

Many doctors agreed with Director Huo’s stance and were happy for Ding Yue. A patient’s life should always come first.

However, there were still some doctors who had their reservations and chose self-preservation.

’It’s not easy for a regular doctor to keep their job at a top-tier hospital,’ they thought. ’You have to be cautious, always cautious.’

Ding Yue’s experience made some doctors put their guard up, leaving them disheartened.

’If Dr. Ding’s story had actually hit the news,’ they reasoned, ’under the pressure of public opinion, even if she did nothing wrong and Director Huo supported her, would the hospital leadership suspend, discipline, or even fire her just to quell the public outrage?’

’You can never be sure about these things. When it’s ’for the greater good,’ it all comes down to the whims of the leadership.’

’Dr. Ding followed procedure yesterday, and what was the result?’

’The patient’s family denied everything, refused to pay, and even caused a huge scene.’

’And that reporter, Feng Yuefang, with her aggressive tactics... what junior doctor wouldn’t be terrified?’

Incidents like this serve as a lesson. There will always be some whose passion is hard to extinguish, but there will also always be others who become jaded and concerned only with protecting themselves.

「Meanwhile, at the Fan City TV Station.」

Feng Yuefang was in a great mood. She had worked through the night to put together the sensational news story and had already submitted the first draft.

’This time,’ she thought, ’with this explosive story, I’m guaranteed to get huge ratings.’

Feng Yuefang could already taste it—the public outcry that would erupt once the story aired. In the video, she had used clever editing to maximize the drama of the doctor-patient conflict. It was more than enough to grab everyone’s attention!
