Chapter 59: Chapter 59: Breaking Out! The TV Documentary Airs

In the Emergency Department director’s office, Huo Yun had just finished reviewing a patient’s case file and was preparing to create a surgical plan when his phone rang.

He glanced at the caller ID. To his surprise, it was from Dean Tang Long.

Huo Yun answered immediately.

On the other end of the line, Dean Tang spoke with the utmost courtesy:

”Director Huo, here’s the situation. My cousin was brought to our hospital’s emergency department for acute appendicitis. He’s always been a proud man who doesn’t like to trouble others, so I didn’t even know he was sick and hospitalized. I only found out about the situation when my sister-in-law called me today.”

”I know it’s just a minor surgery for appendicitis, but I’d appreciate it if you could keep an eye on him. Please don’t let him know I called. Just be sure to personally oversee his care for me.”

Hearing Dean Tang’s words, Huo Yun immediately agreed. As the influential vice dean of City First Hospital, Dean Tang was responsible for the scheduling, coordination, and management of the hospital’s important affairs.

He oversaw the hospital’s finances, accounting, statistics, logistics, infrastructure, security, and discipline; in short, he held immense power within the hospital.

Many of the Emergency Department’s initiatives also required Dean Tang’s support and approval, so a medical issue concerning his relative was no small matter.

The moment he hung up the phone, Huo Yun went to find Jiang Ming.

’Thankfully, it’s just an appendectomy. It shouldn’t be a big problem.’ He had a great deal of confidence in Jiang Ming.

A short while later, Jiang Ming arrived at the office. He was quite surprised after hearing what Huo Yun had to say.

”Director Huo, are you saying the patient in bed 5, the one Song Qi is handling, is Dean Tang’s cousin? And the dean personally asked about him?”

Seeing Jiang Ming’s reaction, Huo Yun confirmed with a serious expression:

”That’s right. Qian Xiong is Dean Tang’s cousin. It’s just that Qian Xiong is a low-key person and didn’t want to bother the dean, which is why he didn’t mention it. But just because they aren’t asking for special treatment doesn’t mean we can afford to be anything less than meticulous.”

”For this surgery, don’t have Song Qi do it. You’ll be the chief surgeon, and you’ll personally handle all the follow-up care. That’s the only way I’ll feel at ease.”

Huo Yun held Jiang Ming in high regard. Another reason was Jiang Ming’s special status; having him personally perform the surgery would show Dean Tang the Emergency Department’s sincerity and how seriously they were taking the matter.

Jiang Ming agreed with Huo Yun’s arrangement, but what gave him a headache was that they didn’t have a confirmed diagnosis yet.

Jiang Ming thought for a moment before deciding to explain the situation clearly:

”Director Huo, to be honest with you, Qian Xiong’s case is a bit tricky. He was indeed admitted for acute appendicitis, and we were preparing for surgery. However, something came up. Based on the latest round of tests, it might be a rare type of acute abdomen.”

”We’re waiting for the results of the abdominal paracentesis that Dr. Song is performing.”

Hearing Jiang Ming say they still didn’t have a diagnosis, Huo Yun’s expression grew grim.

’Dean Tang just called, and we haven’t even confirmed Qian Xiong’s condition, let alone started the surgery.’

’This makes our department look incompetent.’

”We’ve done all the necessary tests, but the results are inconclusive. There’s no guarantee the paracentesis will yield a result either. If all else fails, our only option is to perform an exploratory laparotomy and confirm the diagnosis intraoperatively.”

How could Huo Yun possibly remain seated after hearing Jiang Ming’s answer?

”No, that’s not acceptable. We must confirm the patient’s diagnosis before Dean Tang asks for an update.”

”Tell Song Qi to speed up the tests.”

”How about this: once the results are out, we’ll hold a consultation. I’ll go invite Director Zheng Duqing, the senior expert on acute abdomen from General Surgery.”

Jiang Ming was happy to hear that Director Huo was planning a consultation. He thought for a moment and added:

”Director Huo, I’ll arrange a multi-departmental consultation right away. As it happens, Wu Ting also had some ideas and was planning to invite experts from Orthopedics and the National Medical Department for a consultation. We can just combine them.”

”The National Medical Department and Orthopedics?”

Huo Yun was a bit confused. ’Why would you bring in Orthopedics and the National Medical Department for an acute abdomen case?’

Jiang Ming blushed slightly.

”Dr. Wu has a completely different opinion from Dr. Song and me. He doesn’t think it’s an acute abdomen; his preliminary diagnosis is a lumbar disc herniation. And his proposed treatment plan only involves traction, acupuncture, and massage.”

”I was originally keeping his idea as a backup plan. If Dr. Song still couldn’t find the cause, we would try Wu Ting’s approach.”

Huo Yun chuckled. ”That kid... he certainly thinks outside the box. Alright, let’s hold a meeting together. Having another perspective is always a good thing.”

Jiang Ming immediately called Song Qi, informed him of the patient’s situation, and urged him to get the results as quickly as possible. They absolutely had to have a treatment plan ready by the time Dean Tang inquired again.

Just two days after the Emergency Department treated the mass casualty incident, the medical staff had already settled back into their daily routine. Most of the injured had been transferred and triaged to general wards.

Although things had quieted down in the Emergency Department, in the public sphere and in the media, the discussion surrounding this rescue effort was reaching a fever pitch.

Following a brief, serious news report on the night of the incident, a documentary summarizing and commemorating City First Hospital’s treatment of the mass casualty victims aired tonight on Fan City TV.

The documentary was divided into two parts. The first part was a review and summary of the entire rescue operation, including a report on various statistics.

Dean Tang of City First Hospital also gave a concluding speech, offering his insights from a broad perspective. The second part of the documentary, however, focused on individual doctors with close-ups and dedicated footage.

The documentary vividly showcased the stellar performance of Wu Ting, the young emergency doctor, during this rescue operation.

The film featured interview testimonials about Dr. Wu from many physicians, praise from Head Nurse Xiao Xixi, and professional evaluations from different perspectives, including Attending Physician Qin Donglai, Associate Chief Physician Jiang Ming, and Director Huo Yun.

There was also gratitude from the patients he had treated and their families.

In short, overnight, Wu Ting became a hot topic, his online traffic skyrocketing.

Public accounts and independent media outlets also began simultaneously sharing some of Wu Ting’s highlight moments.

”Dr. Wu Ting, throughout the entire rescue operation, demonstrated the comprehensive skills of City First Hospital’s new generation of doctors...”

”Dr. Wu’s groundbreaking integrated National Medicine and modern medicine approach to the Tracheotomy ensured an artificial airway was established for patients in the fastest possible time, perfectly resolving subsequent infection issues...”

”The knowledgeable Dr. Wu was the first in the province to apply and promote the Haijin Gang Burn Fluid Replacement Formula, earning high praise from Professor Shen’s team...”

”Amidst the challenges faced by the older generation of doctors, Dr. Wu innovated boldly, utilizing the hospital’s advanced experimental equipment to perform the first-ever continuous blood purification therapy at City First Hospital, forging a new path for the treatment of sepsis...”

Headline after headline, paired with clips from the documentary, began to spread.

Good looks, tenacious willpower, and professional medical skills.

Just like that, Wu Ting went viral!
