Chapter 88: Chapter 88: First Battle as Team Leader

”Director Huo, for the other spot, I recommend Dr. Yasui from my team. Dr. Yasui is experienced and a senior resident. He’ll be a perfect fit to support Wu Ting and the others.”

Right after Qin Donglai finished recommending Cheng Feng, Jiang Ming immediately put forward a candidate of his own.

Everyone was a little surprised to hear Yasui’s name, but on second thought, he really was the most suitable choice.

Qin Donglai gave Jiang Ming a meaningful look, quickly understanding his intentions.

Huo Yun was an old fox; how could he not understand? This was a favor Jiang Ming was intentionally extending.

After all, in terms of personal connections, Luo Ming was the most logical candidate. He had enough seniority, and he already had a good rapport with Wu Ting and Cheng Feng.

However, Luo Ming was Qin Donglai’s right-hand man. Now that Qin Donglai was in charge of routine surgeries, he definitely wouldn’t want to let go of an assistant he was so used to working with.

Furthermore, Wu Ting had started out on Qin Donglai’s team, where Luo Ming was his superior. Forcing Luo Ming to now switch roles and become Wu Ting’s assistant would inevitably create a poor dynamic and affect team unity.

Beyond that, there were other considerations behind this personnel arrangement.

From Jiang Ming’s perspective, planting Yasui in Wu Ting’s group was also a strategic move for the future. Wu Ting was leading a small group for now, but that was temporary. Before long, he was bound to build a more mature and better-staffed team.

Placing Yasui there now was a way to secure a spot in advance. Later, if there were any new developments in Wu Ting’s group, Jiang Ming could stay informed.

Most importantly, putting Yasui on Wu Ting’s team was a gesture of respect to both Qin Donglai and Director Huo. In return, Jiang Ming’s team could now use the spot Yasui vacated to bring in new talent.

Jiang Ming had already planned this, intending to use this opportunity to bring one of his own juniors into his team.

Although Yasui had been a resident for many years, he was just a contract worker—nothing more than a diligent workhorse. He had no special talents or powerful connections; his only strengths were his diligence and compliance. This made him the most suitable bargaining chip.

As for whether Yasui, the person in question, was willing or not, nobody cared.

If Yasui was unwilling, he could just leave. It’s not like City First Hospital was short on resident doctors.

”Good. Director Jiang’s suggestion is excellent. Dr. Yasui, what are your thoughts?”

Huo Yun looked at Yasui.

’What could he possibly think?’ To be honest, he was definitely resentful. He was a senior resident, after all. He used to be the one training interns, and now he was supposed to be Wu Ting’s workhorse.

But all he could do was endure it.

”It’s my honor to be able to join Dr. Wu Ting’s group. I will certainly use my experience to assist Dr. Wu Ting well. I will contribute my strength to our department’s ’Key Specialty Program for Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic Diagnosis and Treatment in Emergency Surgery.’”

After stating his position, Yasui sat back down, deflated.

”Good. Since Dr. Yasui also agrees, then this matter is settled.”

With Huo Yun’s final decision, the new personnel arrangements were complete.

”Next, everyone will begin working according to the new group assignments. At the same time, talent recruitment and the advancement of departmental research projects will proceed steadily.”

”That’s all for today. Meeting adjourned.”

...

...

After this round of adjustments in the Emergency Department, everyone gradually began to adapt.

Overall, everyone was full of energy and anticipation. A bigger and stronger department meant better results, which was directly tied to everyone’s bonuses and performance reviews. The atmosphere was one of thriving prosperity.

Only Yasui, on Wu Ting’s team, was somewhat dejected, daring only to sigh when no one was around.

After all, back on Jiang Ming’s team, as a senior resident, he at least had a few interns to order around.

Now, look at him. He had to go through the wards one by one, clipboard in hand, doing rounds. Afterward, he had to compile everything and report his work to Wu Ting.

Even though Wu Ting was Director Huo’s trusted subordinate, the department’s rising star, and had limitless potential, he was still just a junior doctor who had recently completed his residency.

Before, he had willingly and wholeheartedly followed Jiang Ming. With Wu Ting, however, there was always a sense of resentment.

But this was a decision made by both Director Huo and Director Jiang. How could he dare to resist? He had worked very hard just to stay at City First Hospital—a Class A Grade 3 hospital in a prefecture-level city, and the most capable one in all of Fan City at that!

Even if it meant being a workhorse, it was a position many people envied.

After a sigh, Yasui diligently continued his rounds and wrote up his notes.

Having finished all this, Yasui returned to the on-call room.

Today, it was Wu Ting’s group’s turn to be on duty. Since Wu Ting was the nominal group leader, the more senior Yasui had to follow his orders and directions while on the front lines.

Faced with this embarrassing situation, Yasui was holding in his frustration, determined to find an opportunity during a consultation to showcase his own skills and experience. He had to show Wu Ting what he was capable of. In terms of presence and character, he couldn’t let himself be seen as inferior.

Just then, a few people arrived at the triage desk, arguing noisily as they came in.

Head Nurse Xiao Xixi stepped forward to handle them personally.

There were four people: a young couple, an old man in his seventies, and a bald man who bore some resemblance to the old man.

The old man lay on a stretcher, one hand pressed lightly to his chest, his face pale as he wailed in pain.

Meanwhile, his son held onto the stretcher with one hand while pointing at the young couple with the other, cursing at them.

The commotion soon alerted Wu Ting and Yasui, who hurried out.

Wu Ting quickly got a grasp of the situation.

The patient had been hit by the couple’s car on the road, causing chest pain. The patient’s son had rushed over upon hearing the news and had dragged the young couple to the hospital, refusing to let them go.

”Hey, man, calm down. We never said we wouldn’t pay. We’re here at the hospital, aren’t we? We’re not running away. Once the doctor finishes the examination, we’ll take responsibility for whatever we’re supposed to.”

”No way! You give me money first. What if you slip away while I’m getting my dad checked out?”

”How about this: transfer me five thousand yuan first. Based on the doctor’s diagnosis, we’ll settle the difference later—if it’s more, you pay more; if it’s less, I’ll refund you.”

The bald man demanded arrogantly.

The young couple conferred with each other.

”I honestly didn’t see if I hit him or not. He just fell down. I panicked and hit him again. There are no surveillance cameras on that stretch of road. Now that he’s like this, how can we even argue our case?”

”I think he was trying to scam us. He scared me; it’s not like I did it on purpose.”

”If there’s no other way, let’s just transfer him the five thousand for now. We’ll deal with the rest after the doctor sees him.”

...

While the couple was deliberating, the old man began to wail.

”Ouch! Doctor, it hurts! It’s killing me. I’m having trouble breathing.”

Lying on the stretcher, the old man’s breathing rate quickened, and his overall condition seemed poor.

While the involved parties were arguing, Yasui pulled on Wu Ting’s sleeve from the side. At the same time, he also called Xiao Xixi over.

”Dr. Wu, in my judgment, this patient is just faking it. He’s a repeat offender. I ran into him several times before when I was with Director Jiang.”

”This old man, he’s taking advantage of the fact that he’s over 70 and exempt from administrative penalties. He’s completely shameless, pulling these scams again and again to make a living.”

”If you don’t believe me, ask them in a bit. The incident either happened on that stretch of Qingfeng Road with no cameras and poor visibility, or on Shuangxi Road...”

”It’s just that today, the old man’s acting has gotten even better. He used to always claim an elbow injury.”

”The truth is, he has a hairline fracture in his arm that never healed properly. He’s a pro at this. In a moment, we can just take an X-ray and contact the orthopedic doctor, and that’ll be that.”

Yasui was deliberately trying to show off.

Xiao Xixi agreed with Yasui’s deduction. ”Dr. Wu, now that Dr. Yasui mentions it, I have seen this old man a few times myself.”

”It’s just bad luck for this young couple. There are no cameras, and the patient’s arm is genuinely injured. It’s impossible to argue.”

”They can only pay some money to settle it privately.”

Wu Ting naturally believed what Yasui and Xiao Xixi said—that this was a seasoned scammer.

However, looking at the patient’s condition, he felt something was off. This might not be an act.

”How about this: I’ll perform a palpation, auscultation, and percussion on the patient first. If his chest is genuinely injured, a broken rib could be life-threatening.”

Scammer or not, once he was in the hospital, he was a patient. Wu Ting still prepared to conduct a thorough examination.

Seeing Wu Ting ignore his advice, Yasui frowned, displeased, but he didn’t voice it.

”Fine. You’re the group leader, after all. You call the shots.”

Yasui followed behind. ’Young people are just too naive. They haven’t experienced the dark side of society.’

’Before the examination is even finished, as soon as the bald guy gets the money, he’ll take the old man and leave. They’ve got this down to a science!’

Wu Ting stepped forward to diagnose the patient directly. Under his [Rib Fracture Diagnosis (Yellow)], he indeed noticed something was wrong.

If not for his high degree of professional knowledge and sharp clinical judgment, it would have been very easy to overlook.

”Sister Xiao, immediately perform a full assessment on the patient: heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and blood oxygen saturation...”

”Dr. Yasui, go arrange for the patient to be given analgesics—non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs—to alleviate his pain.”

Xiao Xixi immediately went to carry out Wu Ting’s orders.

Yasui, however, felt that Wu Ting was making a mountain out of a molehill. He’d already reminded him the patient was just faking.

But he couldn’t just say that in front of the patient and his family.

”Got it.”

Yasui went to prepare the medication, slacking off a bit, not taking the matter seriously at all.

The old man looked at Wu Ting with some gratitude. ”Thank you, doctor, thank you... Doctor... The painkillers, quick, it’s killing me.”

The patient’s son seized the opportunity. ”See? My father is in this state! This doctor is truly perceptive, with eyes like a hawk. My father’s chest is injured; his ribs might be broken. This is very serious. Are you still not transferring the money?!”

’As he turned, the son was a little surprised by his father’s acting today. And what a great idea it was! A hairline fracture in the elbow is only worth so much. But a chest injury, a broken rib? That’s much more serious. It puts more psychological pressure on the young couple and lets them demand more money.’

As the medical staff took the patient to the resuscitation room, his son paid him no mind, instead pulling the young couple aside.

’How could he possibly wait for the doctor’s diagnosis? Now was the perfect time to settle privately!’

The bald man pretended to open his phone and look up the surgical costs for treating a rib fracture.

”You saw how serious that doctor was. My father’s injury is not light; he might have a broken rib. I need to go look after him, and I’m afraid you’ll run off. I looked it up on Baidu—surgery for a broken rib costs around 3,000 yuan, plus nutritional supplements... How about this: eight thousand yuan, one flat price to settle this.”

The bald man pulled out a piece of paper from somewhere, borrowed a pen from the nurse’s station, and directly drafted a private settlement agreement for a car accident.

He handed it to the young couple.

The young couple felt that the bald man’s actions were a bit too practiced, but they didn’t dwell on it.

After all, a place like a hospital was intimidating, and the old man was quite old. And that Dr. Wu had looked so grave.

Since the bald man was willing to settle for a flat fee, the young couple looked at each other and agreed to the proposal.

After signing the paper and transferring the money, the young couple prepared to leave.

”This is settled, then. One price, no backing out.”

The bald man watched the transfer complete, suppressed a smile, and waved the agreement.

”It’s here in black and white. You can go. I have to go look after my old man now. Count yourselves lucky.”

Watching the couple’s retreating figures, the bald man was incredibly smug.

’The biggest hero today was that young doctor. Young people really don’t know anything. The old man just wailed a few times, and he thought it was a sternum fracture. An easy eight thousand yuan.’
