Chapter 94: Chapter 94: Wu Ting Takes Action

Since the interview and filming, Zhu Zhu and Wu Ting had maintained a very good personal relationship.

Fresh from her bath, Zhu Zhu tucked her long hair into a cute pink cap. She wrapped her bathrobe snugly around herself, the fabric hinting at the perfectly toned figure beneath. Her long, slender legs carried her to the living room, where she flopped onto the sofa and picked up her phone.

”Ah, Dr. Wu. You never call unless you need something. Is it always business with you?”

She followed it with a pouting emoji.

Still, Zhu Zhu replied to Wu Ting’s request immediately.

”Feng Yuefang is a senior reporter at our station. You could call her one of my seniors. It’s just... I don’t really approve of her methods. We’re not close.”

After Zhu Zhu’s confirmation, Wu Ting replied:

”So, she’s sanctimonious and unscrupulous?”

Zhu Zhu clearly hadn’t expected Wu Ting to be so perceptive.

”You’re a sharp judge of character, Dr. Wu. And you’re spot on. Feng Yuefang will do anything to get an exclusive story, or even for certain special reports. She’s a controversial figure at the station, but because she delivers results, Director Lin relies on her heavily.”

Wu Ting replied a moment later:

”Got it.”

”Right. As for reviewing the articles, Director Lin is usually in charge. But if Director Cai gets involved, he has the final say.”

”Judging by this photo... what, did Feng Yuefang show up at your ER? Did she use some underhanded tactics to manufacture a story?”

”Did this affect you? If she dares to slander you or smear your name, I’ll go to Director Cai and speak up for you.”

Zhu Zhu was a true friend.

”I suspect she’s colluding with a professional medical heckler just to generate buzz. I’m still investigating, but I’ll handle this myself. Captain Huang Yangming of the Criminal Investigation Division owes me a favor. I’ll call on him if I need to.”

Wu Ting had a good impression of Zhu Zhu, so he didn’t feel the need to keep secrets from her.

”Well, well. I didn’t realize our Dr. Wu was such a big shot. Let me know if you need anything.”

After her reply, Zhu Zhu sent a sticker of two thumbs up.

”Dr. Wu, when this is all over, you owe me dinner.”

Zhu Zhu shifted on the couch, revealing a sliver of fair, delicate skin from beneath her bathrobe.

”You got it, Miss Zhu!”

After confirming the details with Zhu Zhu, Wu Ting had a plan.

The most important thing now was to de-escalate the situation, disperse the crowd, and get Ding Yue out of there.

”Alright, that’s enough. This is a hospital, not a place to be causing a scene. We have to save the injured and treat other patients.”

”Everyone, please disperse. As for Dr. Ding’s situation, we can discuss this elsewhere. The family’s demand is likely about the surgical fees, which is something we can negotiate.”

Wu Ting stepped forward.

Feng Yuefang was clearly not satisfied with Wu Ting’s attempt to appease them, but she astutely picked up on what she perceived as a note of concession in his tone.

The camera swung toward him.

”It seems this doctor knows Dr. Ding was in the wrong. He wants to smooth things over, but this is a matter of principle. It’s not just about Luo Xiaohu’s family. This is an example of a very troubling trend in healthcare.”

”The hospital can’t just pay to make this go away. We want fairness! We want justice! To reach an understanding, our demands are simple. First, waive all of Luo Xiaohu’s treatment and surgical fees. Second, we require Ding Yue to apologize to the family on camera. And third, the City First Hospital Emergency Department must issue a formal statement to the public, assuring the people that this will never happen again.”

Listening to Feng Yuefang press her advantage, piling on one serious-sounding accusation after another.

Even a battle-hardened head nurse like Xiao Xixi found the situation tricky.

No wonder so many medical professionals considered reporters the worst of the worst. It was a sad and frustrating reality of the healthcare field.

Many reporters and media outlets rarely provided positive coverage or guided public opinion in a constructive way when it came to healthcare. Instead, they often sensationalized medical disputes and industry shortcomings.

Like a pack of hyenas chasing celebrity gossip, they swarmed to grab the public’s attention with headlines about isolated incidents like the ”sewn-up anus” or ”sky-high medical bills,” using them to incite widespread suspicion. This made people dissatisfied and doubtful of routine medical procedures.

Furthermore, the healthcare industry serves every level of society, and with such a wide range of demands, there were always people making difficult, even unreasonable, requests. Whenever a pre-hospital emergency response was delayed, or a dispute over fees arose, the media would inevitably jump in, using inflammatory headlines like ”They Watched Him Die” or ”Hospitals Only Care About Money” to incite a public witch hunt.

And this Feng Yuefang was clearly a master of the game.

Wu Ting knew Feng Yuefang was trouble, but now that he had the dirt on her, he wasn’t flustered in the slightest. His plan: delay and deflect.

”Alright. We agree to the demands of Reporter Feng and the family. However, this isn’t something that a few on-duty doctors can decide on the spot. Look, everyone here needs to be seen. The hospital has to keep running, and this is the emergency department—everyone’s in a hurry.”

”We’d like to invite the patient’s family and Reporter Feng to our office. I will contact the hospital administration immediately, and we will be sure to give you all a satisfactory answer.”

”With an upright, conscientious professional like Reporter Feng, someone who isn’t afraid to challenge authority, I’m sure everyone can feel confident about the upcoming discussion.”

”Let’s not continue to occupy this public space in the emergency lobby.”

”How does that sound?”

Wu Ting looked at the crowd with a sincere expression.

The crowd was mostly just there for the spectacle. Everyone in the ER was in a hurry, and if this Luo Xiaohu and Reporter Feng were going to delay their treatment, that was a different story.

”Yeah, yeah, Dr. Wu is right. That Reporter Feng looks sharp and mean; she’s not going to let this go easily. With her watching over Luo Xiaohu, they’ll definitely keep the hospital honest. Just get them to clear out of the way. I need to see a doctor!”

”That’s right! Reporter Feng looks so fierce, there’s no way these young doctors would dare to just brush this off. Let them go make space. We’re all in a hurry!”

Xiao Xixi seized the opportunity.

”Everyone, please line up over here. I’ll get you all sorted out, whether you need to see a doctor or get a test.”

Feng Yuefang hadn’t expected Wu Ting to pull a move like this. Of course, her motives weren’t pure to begin with, and she had already gotten enough footage for the day.

She had no desire to get into a head-on confrontation with the hospital administration. If they called the police, it just wouldn’t be worth it.

”Fine,” she conceded. ”In that case, we’ll go to the conference room.”

Hearing Reporter Feng relent, Luo Xiaohu followed along. ”Remember what you said! All the fees have to be waived!”

Wu Ting personally helped Ding Yue up, whispering in her ear, ”Dr. Ding, don’t be scared. That Reporter Feng is shady; she’s got a history. The ’family member’ is most likely a professional medical heckler. We’ll placate them for now. I’m going to contact Director Cai at the TV station and Captain Huang from the Criminal Investigation Division. The footage they shot today will never air.”

Hearing his plan, Ding Yue was stunned that Wu Ting had so calmly laid out so many countermeasures.

”Cheng Feng, come and help Dr. Ding to the break room.”

Wu Ting personally led Reporter Feng and Luo Xiaohu, and the three of them soon arrived at the conference room.

”Please, have a seat and wait. I’m going to get the hospital administrators now.”

Wu Ting was perfectly polite. After leaving the conference room, he had no intention of paying them any more mind. ’They have guilty consciences,’ he thought. ’How long can they really afford to wait?’

After leaving the conference room, Wu Ting told Cheng Feng to keep an eye on them covertly, while he himself went straight to find the bald man.

In the conference room, Feng Yuefang, who had already collected more than enough material for her story, quickly grew impatient. Luo Xiaohu was getting nervous.

”That’s enough for today. Let’s go. Wait for my story to air. The hospital will be under immense public pressure, and *that* will be the perfect time for you to shake them down. For now, we should pull back. No need to overplay our hand.”

Feng Yuefang was a veteran at this; she knew that once public opinion was inflamed, the truth became irrelevant.

Then, to quell the public outrage, the hospital would have no choice but to sacrifice the junior doctor, Ding Yue.

Besides, her goal was never justice or fairness. It was simply to produce a high-impact news story and boost her performance metrics.

”Alright, whatever you say, Reporter Feng.”

Luo Xiaohu had to admire Feng Yuefang’s ruthlessness. ’Truly,’ he thought, ’the deadliest heart belongs to a woman.’

One after the other, the two of them quietly slipped out of City First Hospital.

Cheng Feng reported their movements to Wu Ting via text message.

”Brother Ting, it’s just like you predicted. The two of them slipped away.”

In the hospital room, Wu Ting called the bald man out into the hallway.

”Not long ago, I performed a limb replantation surgery for Officer Liu Ping of the Criminal Investigation Division. Officer Liu is still in recovery. You can ask anyone about it.”

”Because of that, the Criminal Investigation Division owes me a favor.”

Wu Ting took out his phone and pulled up a number. ”This is Captain Huang Yangming’s number, head of the Criminal Investigation Division. That scam you and your father were pulling... it could be investigated very easily. If you tell me what you know about Luo Xiaohu, I’ll let it go.”

The bald man respected Wu Ting immensely.

”Dr. Wu, I know what you’re capable of. And it’s not that I’m afraid of the cops throwing me in jail—I’m a regular down at the station. The main thing is, I’m grateful to you for saving my old man’s life.”

”I admit it, I know Luo Xiaohu. The guy’s just like me, a professional medical heckler. I know that Reporter Feng, too. In our circle, plenty of people have made deals with her.”

”I’ll contact Luo Xiaohu right now and get the full story for you, every last detail. Luo Xiaohu is greedy, cowardly, and a gambling addict. The man has no backbone; he’ll spill everything the second he’s pressured.”

The bald man quickly gave Luo Xiaohu a call.

”Dr. Wu, I’m going to find him now. I guarantee I’ll get every last detail of his shady deal with Feng Yuefang.”

Less than half an hour after the bald man left, he had gotten everything. He sent over all the details of the deal between Luo Xiaohu and Feng Yuefang, including their chat logs and transaction records.

Looking at the evidence, Wu Ting was stunned by just how corrupt Feng Yuefang was.

Wu Ting immediately called Director Cai and sent him the evidence.

Director Cai was an upright man of principle. He held Wu Ting in high regard and also owed him a favor.

”Dr. Wu, our station will take this matter very seriously. Rest assured, I will see that justice is done for the doctors in your emergency department. I will personally review Feng Yuefang’s article; there is no way I’m letting her publish it.”

”Dr. Wu, thank you for helping our station root out a disgrace. This Feng Yuefang... she truly disgusts me!”

Wu Ting was very satisfied with Director Cai’s response. Otherwise, he was fully prepared to go to Captain Huang. With concrete evidence in hand, Feng Yuefang wouldn’t have been able to get away with it.

And not long after Wu Ting had settled the matter,

Director Huo Yun, Jiang Ming, and Director Zhao Jun from the National Medical Department all rushed over.

If a situation like this wasn’t handled properly, the entire Emergency Department—and even City First Hospital itself—would be affected.
