Chapter 75: Chapter 75: First Ambulance Ride-Along

The free clinic at City First Hospital was a great success. Wu Ting’s non-invasive, cosmetic-style surgical technique held a huge appeal for those conscious of their appearance, especially people in certain professions.

Even though this surgical technique was just introduced and lacked extensive experience, many people still chose to come to City First Hospital for the surgery.

Of course, this was inextricably linked to City First Hospital’s publicity. The recent Suspended Gasless Abdominal Laparoscopic Appendectomy, a provincial first performed by Wu Ting, had also added tremendous credibility to City First Hospital’s Emergency Surgery department.

The fact that City First Hospital’s Emergency Surgery department could develop a unique, specialized surgical technique to successfully operate on an extremely elderly patient—a case that even senior department heads in the industry found tricky—was highly convincing in itself.

This time, Wu Ting’s Wu’s Umbilical Hole Laparoscopic Appendectomy was also met with high expectations!

In the coming period, the Emergency Surgery team would have many surgeries to perform.

Wu Ting, as the head of the project team, would begin leading the surgeries. Jiang Ming and Song Qi, completely won over, would assist him.

Once the two new surgical techniques recently pioneered by Wu Ting matured and built a reputation, a steady stream of patients would be drawn by his fame.

At that time, the entire project team would also see continuous revenue from the project. The profits from this were far greater than those from ordinary surgeries!

Therefore, the doctors selected for the project team to participate in the surgeries felt extremely honored and cherished the opportunity, and their morale was high!

The doctors in Emergency Surgery were also looking forward to the upcoming implementation phase for the new surgical techniques.

As quitting time approached, the free clinic officially ended.

Today happened to be Wu Ting’s turn on duty.

The other doctors went home after a tiring day’s work. Senior doctors like Jiang Ming and Song Qi also left the department early.

Wu Ting rested for a while in the on-call room before preparing to do his rounds in the wards.

Just then, Xiao Xixi received a call for help.

In a residential complex near the Fan City Botanical Garden slated for demolition, an elderly man was stir-frying a dish, waiting for his son to come home from work for dinner.

Suddenly, the old man felt a continuous, tearing, excruciating pain in his chest and collapsed to his knees in agony.

The old man’s wife, in a complete panic, immediately dialed the emergency number, intending to have her husband sent to City First Hospital for treatment.

After receiving the call, the City First Hospital Emergency Department immediately dispatched an ambulance to pick him up.

Xiao Xixi personally spoke with the patient’s wife on the phone to communicate and conduct an initial consultation.

Xiao Xixi was very experienced. She quickly learned that the patient had a history of hypertension and was 65 years old. Based on the symptoms—excruciating tearing pain, profuse sweating, a pale complexion, and a rapid heartbeat—

Xiao Xixi had a very bad feeling; she suspected the patient might have an aortic dissection!

If not treated in time, aortic dissection has an extremely high mortality rate. Most patients with aortic dissection die within hours to days of onset, and the prognosis depends on the location, extent, and severity of the lesion.

If such patients are not treated promptly, they can die within 48 hours due to the aortic dissection aneurysm rupturing into the thoracic or abdominal cavity, or the pericardial sac, leading to acute heart failure or kidney failure.

The situation was critical. Xiao Xixi immediately contacted and organized the ambulance team.

A driver and stretcher bearers were assigned at once. As for the nurse, Xiao Xixi decided to lead the team herself, making her the head of this transport mission.

The only issue was the accompanying doctor. Because the free clinic had just ended, all the senior doctors in the emergency department had gone home.

The remaining on-duty physicians basically had only four or five years of work experience.

After arriving at the on-call room, Xiao Xixi saw Luo Ming and Wu Ting.

”Dr. Luo, you need to come with me to Shiyan Garden right now to pick up a patient. The initial diagnosis is aortic dissection. The situation is extremely dangerous.”

”The patient’s condition is critical, and we’ll likely have to perform pre-hospital emergency care in the ambulance. We’re taking the newest ambulance this time; it’s equipped with a full set of equipment, including an MCCD (Mechanical Chest Compression Device), a bag-valve mask, a defibrillator, and tracheal intubation tools... Do you know how to perform these procedures, especially establishing an advanced airway?” Xiao Xixi asked, just to be safe.

Although Luo Ming was a senior resident physician and had been on many ambulance runs, most of them were for routine non-emergency calls and hospital transfers. He had never actually experienced such a dangerous emergency.

”Sister Xiao, I only know basic bag-valve mask ventilation. I haven’t done advanced airway management before... and I’ve never had the chance to try the MCCD...”

Luo Ming blushed. The truth was, this kind of emergency was rare, and many doctors at City First Hospital hadn’t received comprehensive training for it.

Time waits for no one. If the patient really had an aortic dissection, every minute counted. There could be no delays.

Xiao Xixi could only decide to take Luo Ming for the time being. It wasn’t a guarantee that those skills would be needed.

”Sister Xiao, I’m trained in systematic pre-hospital emergency care for ambulance doctors. Let Dr. Luo stay here on duty. I’ll go with you.”

Wu Ting possessed the ’Ambulance Doctor Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Ability (Yellow),’ which was perfect for this moment.

Seeing Wu Ting’s unwavering confidence, Xiao Xixi was overjoyed. After everything they had been through, she had complete trust in him.

Luo Ming also breathed a sigh of relief. ”Dr. Wu, I’ll be counting on you then. I’ll hold down the fort here in the department.”

Luo Ming had grown accustomed to Wu Ting’s ”omnipotence” and his habit of always stepping up. To be honest, in a place like the emergency department, having a pillar of support like Wu Ting was truly reassuring.

”Then let’s head out now.”

Xiao Xixi led the team. According to City First Hospital’s longstanding pre-hospital emergency care statistics, their average dispatch response time was 14.5 minutes, and their standard ambulance arrival time was kept within 16.2 minutes, ranking first in all of Fan City.

The driver, Old Zhou, was also a highly experienced veteran.

Seeing Xiao Xixi personally leading the mission, he knew the patient’s situation was likely not optimistic.

Once the entire rescue team was in the vehicle, the driver simultaneously called the phone number the patient’s family had provided. After making contact and getting a final confirmation, they set off immediately.

Over the phone, the patient’s wife’s voice was already choked with tears.

”Nurse Xiao, the patient, Jia Qingshan, has gone into shock, and his pulse has weakened significantly...”

After the driver relayed the report, the vehicle was already on its way—a race against time!

Wu Ting’s expression was grave. This was also his first time accompanying an ambulance to pick up a patient.

...

...

Jia Ming, thirty-two, was an architect at a design firm. This year, the firm’s business had plummeted, and the market outlook was grim. As a result, his commission payments were a distant dream, leaving him to survive on a meager base salary.

Jia Ming was in a foul mood. With no work to do, he had left the office early to go home. In the past, leaving work this early would have been unimaginable.

After returning to the Shiyan Garden District, he found that parking spaces were scarce, as it was an old residential complex.

He drove to the base of his apartment building and found all the spots were taken, so he could only drive further away to look for one.

After circling the area for a long time without finding anything, he grew irritable. Annoyed, he decided to just park along the side of the main road.

Seeing that it was still early, he took out his phone and prepared to play a round of Honor of Kings to soothe his frayed nerves.

Jia Ming ignored the fact that he was blocking a lane and began to play.

Just as he was getting into the game, his phone vibrated. He glanced at it and saw it was a call from his mom.

Jia Ming frowned. ’I’ll head home after this match anyway,’ he thought, and immediately declined the call.

Answering the phone would disrupt his game, and he had reached a critical moment.

But moments after he declined it, his mom called again. Jia Ming was in the middle of enjoying his new Year of the Dragon skin for Sun Ce and was just about to get a quadra kill.

His teammates were cheering ”You’re awesome, bro!” over voice chat. How could he possibly stop now?

He declined the call again.

’She’s probably just asking when I’m coming home for dinner again. Every day, it’s nothing but food, food, food.’

Jia Ming could practically hear his mom’s nagging in his ears out of sheer habit.

’Dad’s probably cooking right now.’

After declining the call, Jia Ming went back to his game. ’Once this match is over,’ he figured, ’it’ll be just about time for dinner when I get home.’

Just as Jia Ming was getting absorbed in his game, the sound of an ambulance siren approached.

The ambulance was wide, and the roads in the old residential complex were already narrow. With parking spaces lining the right side, Jia Ming’s car, parked carelessly on the left side of the main road, was directly blocking the ambulance’s path.

The ambulance blared its horn.

Jia Ming was in the middle of a kill streak. He glanced at the vehicle behind him with disgust, muttered a few curses, then put on his headphones, reclined his seat, and went back to his game.
