Chapter 90: Chapter 90: Yao Shi’s Niece Seeks Wu Ting for Surgery

Yasui entered the operating room, still shaken.

If Wu Ting hadn’t stood up for him today, he really would’ve been in a world of trouble. That bald guy was clearly not someone to be trifled with. Once inside the operating room, Yasui finally managed to calm his nerves.

Looking at Wu Ting at the operating table, he felt a pang of guilt.

At the operating table, Wu Ting and Dr. You began the surgery.

They placed the patient in a semi-recumbent position with his hands behind his head, then performed routine disinfection and draping.

The anesthesiologist stepped in and injected a local anesthetic at the incision site. Once the area was anesthetized down to the parietal pleura, they began an exploratory needle aspiration.

Sure enough, just as Wu Ting had predicted, there was both fluid and gas!

’It really is a pneumothorax and hemothorax.’

Yasui stood to the side, filled with admiration. ’To make a diagnosis with just palpation, auscultation, and percussion... he’s incredible.’

Next, Wu Ting made a roughly 3cm incision on the patient’s side.

Wu Ting began to cut through the skin and subcutaneous tissue...

While Wu Ting was performing the surgery, Director Jiang Ming received a call and rushed over immediately.

Jiang Ming was also proficient in thoracentesis and closed chest drainage. He had originally come prepared to save the day, but upon entering the operating room, he was met with the sight of Wu Ting’s masterful technique.

”...Scrub nurse... curved hemostat...”

Wu Ting gave the command clearly. After taking the curved hemostat from the scrub nurse, he began to bluntly dissect the chest wall muscles, reaching the superior border of the rib...

Then, with a decisive and precise movement, he punctured through the chest wall muscles and entered the pleural cavity...

As Yasui and Jiang Ming watched, a spray of gas and bloody fluid shot out from the patient’s body...

Watching this scene unfold, Jiang Ming was filled with admiration. ’This is a thoracic Surgical Technique, and Wu Ting has mastered it so completely. Even I can’t operate with such precision.’

Yasui’s face flushed with shame. ’This Dr. Wu is far more skilled than I ever imagined.’

Next, Wu Ting used the hemostat to spread and widen the wound, his movements entirely free of hesitation.

”...Scrub nurse... hemostat... drainage tube...”

Wu Ting continued to give orders, and the scrub nurse, not daring to hesitate, immediately handed him the instruments.

With practiced ease, Wu Ting clamped the distal end of the drainage tube with a hemostat, simultaneously using a vascular clamp to close off the proximal end. He then threaded the tube through the dissected opening into the pleural cavity and withdrew the hemostat.

”...Connect the outer end of the drainage tube to the water-seal bottle...”

After giving the order, Wu Ting smoothly released the hemostat that was clamping the drainage tube shut...

Watching Wu Ting work was an eye-opening experience for Jiang Ming. ’So, it can be done like this.’

This particular maneuver of Wu Ting’s was the culmination of decades of Professor Shen Guofeng’s expertise—an optimization and improvement on the original Surgical Technique. It was Jiang Ming’s first time seeing it, and he felt as if he’d had an epiphany.

’So there are little tricks like this for thoracentesis and closed drainage. Amazing.’

Jiang Ming firmly committed it to memory.

Once Wu Ting finished, condensation and fluid drained from the tube every time the patient exhaled!

This meant the entire procedure was a success.

Wu Ting then began applying interrupted sutures and securing the drainage tube...

”...Scrub nurse... three gauze pads...”

Wu Ting gave another order, and the nurse immediately handed him the gauze.

Wu Ting covered the incision with the gauze pads, using a full three layers, then secured them with tape.

Next, Wu Ting checked the drainage tube connection to ensure it was secure and airtight.

Watching Wu Ting’s careful, comprehensive, and meticulous work, Jiang Ming felt like he was watching a training video.

’Back when I was at Xianglin City Hospital, learning thoracentesis and closed drainage from a top attending physician... was the instruction even this good?’

”Dr. Yasui, the patient’s drainage is bloody, so the tubing needs to be stripped every one to two hours. Hold the tube ten centimeters from the chest, one hand behind the other. The hand closer to the chest wall should be palm up...”

Wu Ting instructed Yasui.

At this point, Yasui wouldn’t have dared to be negligent. He immediately committed the instructions to memory.

”Dr. Wu, don’t worry. I’ll handle it properly.”

Wu Ting nodded and added another instruction:

”Make sure the water-seal bottle stays below the chest and is never tipped over. Maintain a closed drainage system with secure connections to prevent intrathoracic infection...”

Yasui listened carefully to Wu Ting’s further instructions, memorizing every word.

Seeing Yasui’s compliance, Jiang Ming, who was standing to the side, was a bit surprised. ’Wu Ting won him over so quickly.’

After Wu Ting finished the initial procedure, Dr. You from orthopedics began his treatment, setting the patient’s fractured rib.

Half an hour later, the entire surgery was complete.

Wu Ting was the first to leave the operating room, followed by Dr. You, leaving Yasui behind to handle the remaining tasks and cleanup.

Yasui didn’t leave the operating room until everything was finished.

Jiang Ming was waiting for Yasui outside the operating room.

Seeing Jiang Ming, Yasui was filled with complicated emotions.

”Yasui, I know you might be resentful about being Wu Ting’s assistant. But his skill and potential are astonishing. Being his subordinate is, in a way, an opportunity for you.”

”Rest assured,” Jiang Ming said with sincerity, ”I had my reasons for assigning you to Wu Ting’s team. If you’re truly unwilling and feel stifled, you can come back to my team.”

Yasui shook his head. ”Director Jiang, it’s true I wasn’t convinced by Wu Ting before. But after today’s incident, I’m completely won over. There’s a good reason he’s a team leader. Dr. Wu’s abilities are far superior to mine. If it weren’t for him today, I might have been finished.”

Yasui bowed to Jiang Ming. ”Director Jiang, thank you for looking out for me in the past. From now on, I will cooperate fully under Dr. Wu. Perhaps... this really is an opportunity for me.”

Jiang Ming was taken aback by Yasui’s reaction. ’I can’t believe it. A single surgery was all it took for Wu Ting to completely win him over.’

That was much faster than he had anticipated.

Jiang Ming patted Yasui’s shoulder. ”Then do your best to cooperate on Dr. Wu’s team. If you have any problems, you can always bring them to me. Even though you’re on Wu Ting’s team now, you were my team member first. If you’re ever truly treated unfairly, you can come back anytime.”

This posturing from Jiang Ming was, of course, a way to maintain his control over Yasui.

Yasui nodded and said, a little distantly, ”Thank you for your concern, Director Jiang. I’m quite satisfied on Wu Ting’s team.”

Jiang Ming frowned but didn’t say anything more.

In his heart, his estimation of Wu Ting rose even higher.

「Kaiyi Hospital.」

Yao Shi’s niece arrived at the General Surgery department.

Yao Shi’s sister was with her.

”Uncle, where do you think I should have the surgery? City Second Hospital, or somewhere else?”

Yao Shi’s niece was an art student who had acute appendicitis and was very worried about scarring from the surgery.

She had come to her uncle to ask where she should have the operation.

Normally, Yao Shi would have recommended City Second Hospital, but he had already resigned from there. It wouldn’t be appropriate to go to City Second Hospital now; he couldn’t bring himself to show his face there.

And here at Kaiyi Hospital, it would be inappropriate for him to operate on his own niece.

Suddenly, Yao Shi thought of the Emergency Surgery Department at City First Hospital.

”I have the best solution for you. Go to the Emergency Surgery Department at City First Hospital, and remember, you must have Dr. Wu Ting as your chief surgeon.”

”For certain reasons, it’s not convenient for me to contact him for you.”

”Remember, you have to get Dr. Wu Ting to be your surgeon!”

Yao Shi said this through gritted teeth. But right now, in all of Fan City, the Wu’s Umbilical Hole Laparoscopic Appendectomy was truly the best option!
