Chapter 81: Chapter 81: Double Happiness? Director Yao Gets Carried Away

Inside City Second Hospital.

Yao Shi was reviewing a case file when his phone rang.

He answered it and heard the voice he had been waiting for.

”Hello, good day. May I ask if this is Director Yao Shi? I’m the director of the Fan City TV program, Path to Health...”

Yao Shi grew ecstatic as he listened to the introduction on the other end of the line.

”Yes, this is Yao Shi. Ahaha, I’m honored to receive your call... Of course... Come to the studio Sunday morning... Okay... Okay... Thank you for your trouble...”

Yao Shi, who was well past forty, was as excited as a young man after hanging up the phone. He pumped his fist and let out a triumphant shout.

’This is great! Everything is ready; all that’s left is to film this episode.’

Yao Shi took a deep breath to calm himself.

He immediately notified the doctors under him to start preparing and sorting through the case files, videos, and photos of recent laparoscopic appendectomies.

Yao Shi was in a fantastic mood. He had been worried about City First Hospital stealing his patients, but now, as soon as the TV show aired, he would be in the limelight and attract plenty of patients.

At the same time, his Kuaiyin account would definitely see a huge surge in traffic.

’Stay calm, stay calm. Once this recording is done, I, Yao Shi, will be considered a renowned expert in the field of laparoscopic diagnostic and therapeutic techniques in Fan City.’

The second episode of Path to Health aired.

Director Ao Wei from the National Hospital appeared, presenting on the topic: ”The Prevention and Treatment of Pediatric Diarrhea and a Share on Spleen and Stomach Regulation with Traditional Chinese Medicine Formulas.”

Yao Shi sat in front of his TV, unwilling to miss a single second. He watched the entire program and took notes, meticulously recording all of Director Ao Wei’s highlights and strong points.

He also studied the videos and case files submitted by Ao Wei’s team, planning to prepare his own materials to the same standard.

After the show ended, Yao Shi kept a close eye on related news. Sure enough, Director Ao Wei’s popularity skyrocketed.

Yao Shi even logged into the National Hospital’s pediatrics department portal. As expected, all of Director Ao Wei’s expert consultation slots were snatched up.

’This influence, this promotional effect... it’s incredible.’

At the end of the show, they also announced the theme for the third episode’s guest: Non-invasive, cosmetic laparoscopic appendectomy. However, this preview was different from before, as it didn’t specify the guest speaker.

Yao Shi’s heart pounded. A laparoscopic appendectomy—weren’t they talking about him?

’Fan City TV is so efficient. I haven’t even started recording yet.’

However, Fan City TV’s promotion was a bit over the top. Although his surgical technique involved smaller incisions and was more minimally invasive than a traditional laparoscopic appendectomy, it was still a far cry from being ”non-invasive” and ”cosmetic.”

After turning off the TV, Yao Shi took out his newly tailored suit, put it on, and began practicing in front of the mirror.

To make his appearance on the show even more perfect, he had even bought a book titled Announcer and Host Training Manual: Voice and Diction.

「Sunday morning.」

In a ward of City First Hospital’s National Medical Department, Qian Xiong had his final acupuncture and tuina massage session with Deputy Director Huang Hong. He had finally recovered and could be discharged.

He had thought he would need surgery and have to endure a lot of pain. He never expected to be cured with just some massages and acupuncture.

Qian Xiong was extremely satisfied with his treatment this time.

He made a rare call to his cousin, Tang Long.

”Ah Long, I really owe you for looking out for me this time. I’m so grateful to Dr. Wu Ting from your hospital’s Emergency Department.”

”Dr. Wu’s diagnosis saved me a lot of suffering. Of course, I also have to thank Director Lu from Orthopedics and Director Huang from the National Medical Department.”

”I’m being discharged this afternoon. Come over for dinner this weekend. My wife and I want to treat you to a proper meal.”

”Ah Long, you have to thank Dr. Wu for me again.”

Listening to Qian Xiong’s call, Dean Tang felt very pleased. This Wu Ting was really making him look good.

”Brother Xiong, I’m glad you’ve recovered. Take it easy and rest up when you get home. I’ll pass your thanks on to Dr. Wu Ting.”

”I’m pretty busy with work, so I won’t come to the ward to see you off. I’ll speak to the head nurse on your floor and ask them to take good care of you.”

After hanging up with Qian Xiong, Dean Tang picked up the grand proposal from his desk, which had been submitted by Huo Yun, for establishing a key specialized department in minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques for emergency surgery.

He then looked over the two brand-new surgical techniques that Wu Ting had recently pioneered and implemented, feeling a wave of emotion.

’This Wu Ting is really incredible.’

’It seems that at the next hospital staff meeting, I’ll need to seriously discuss the future development of the Emergency Surgery Department, as well as how to commend Wu Ting.’

If Huo Yun and Wu Ting could really establish the key specialized department for minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques in emergency surgery, it would be a major political achievement for him.

Dean Tang prepared to give his full support to the Emergency Surgery Department and to fully cultivate Wu Ting’s talent.

Research funding, equipment procurement, personnel recruitment, project revenue bonuses... Dean Tang prepared to plan all of this out in advance.

As for Wu Ting’s employment status, that also needed to be arranged immediately.

Huo Yun was right. For a talent like Wu Ting, the standard procedures were no longer suitable. He needed to be fast-tracked!

Previously, many patients had been lost due to competition from City First Hospital, but now with the recording for Path to Health, Yao Shi was completely at ease.

Early Sunday morning, he arrived at Fan City TV and deliberately took a few photos.

He posted them in his department’s group chat.

”I’ll be at Fan City TV all day today recording an episode of Path to Health. Please forgive me if I can’t respond to things right away.”

After Yao Shi sent the message, the group chat exploded.

The junior doctors below him immediately started sucking up.

”Wow, congratulations, Director Yao! You’re truly a role model for our department.”

”That’s a sharp suit, Director Yao! It really complements your scholarly demeanor.”

”Director Yao, we’re so looking forward to seeing you shine on TV!”

Even the perpetually serious and aloof Director Li Baohua made a rare appearance in the chat to praise Director Yao, telling everyone to learn from him.

Looking at the reactions in the group chat, Director Yao’s sense of accomplishment soared.

Just after he posted a modest reply, his phone vibrated.

He looked and saw it was a familiar young doctor—Jiang Ming!

Jiang Ming got straight to the point, extending an invitation to Director Yao.

After hearing him out, Yao Shi immediately agreed, having no doubt about the organizer’s intentions.

”It’s my honor to be invited to the Fan City Medical Summit Forum.”

”Director Jiang, I will definitely bring the materials on the classic cases of the laparoscopic appendectomy that our department has recently been promoting.”

”I didn’t expect that even a top expert from Jin Province, Professor Shen Guofeng, was invited to this forum. It will be my honor to share the stage with Professor Shen.”

Yao Shi chatted with Jiang Ming for a few more moments before hanging up, his spirits high.

A moment later, Jiang Ming’s e-invitation arrived via email.

Yao Shi replied to confirm his attendance.

’As they say, it takes a good blacksmith to make good steel. It seems the organizers have recognized my unique expertise in laparoscopic techniques and invited me to participate in the academic discussion for the laparoscopy section.’

’Today is really my lucky day.’

’Looks like after I finish recording the show today, I’ll need to film another video.’

The more Yao Shi thought about it, the more self-satisfied he became. ’It seems City First Hospital wants to bury the hatchet with me and use this forum to smooth things over.’

’It makes sense. Between a distinguished chief physician and senior expert in the field of laparoscopy like myself, and a fledgling doctor just starting out, even someone as protective as Huo Yun couldn’t possibly abuse their power to suppress me just for Wu Ting’s sake.’

’This Wu Ting is really my lucky star. I heard he’s a resident trainee from outside the hospital system. Once he completes his residency, if he can’t secure a position at City First Hospital, I could take him into my department as a contract worker.’

’Taking in the junior doctor I once criticized would also help me build my public persona and create some buzz on Kuaiyin.’

Yao Shi was already fantasizing about his meteoric rise over the next few years, with Wu Ting serving as a mascot for his soaring career.

After adjusting his suit one more time, Yao Shi walked into the recording studio.

However, contrary to his expectations, the film crew didn’t seem to have scheduled much time for him, and he didn’t get much camera exposure.

For the most part, he was given a fixed script and just had to recite his lines.

The host, Dong Yiren, gave him very few opportunities to elaborate on or promote his department.

Furthermore, the way he was made to describe his own laparoscopic appendectomy was nothing like what had been advertised in the show’s preview.

The words used were all along the lines of ”traditional,” ”minimally invasive,” ”solid,” and ”classic.”

Yao Shi felt that something wasn’t quite right, but since it was his first time recording a TV show, he didn’t dare ask too many questions.
