Chapter 74: Chapter 74: Yao Shi VS Wu Ting, The War to Snatch Patients

Song Pingping was a belly dance instructor. She had previously been diagnosed with appendicitis, but since her symptoms were mild, she had opted for conservative treatment.

Song Pingping had tried Western medicine and also attempted National Medicine. However, neither antibiotics nor the internal and external application of Chinese herbal remedies could completely cure it.

But as a belly dance instructor, she had very high standards for her figure, especially her abdomen. An appendectomy would inevitably leave a scar, so she had been unable to make up her mind.

Yesterday, she came across a video of Director Yao Shi on Kuaiyin. When she heard that City Second Hospital was holding a free clinic today for laparoscopic appendectomies, she brought her boyfriend along to get a consultation.

The free clinic was bustling with activity. Many people were waiting in line, and the queue for Director Yao was already full. Song Pingping took one look and had no choice but to pull her boyfriend over to the table of an attending physician off to the side, Dr. Wang Qian.

After waiting for a while, Song Pingping sat down and got straight to the point.

”Dr. Wang, I’d like to ask if the laparoscopic appendectomy at your City Second Hospital can be done in a nearly scarless way.”

”I’m a belly dance instructor and performer, so the appearance of the skin on my abdomen is very important to me.”

After she finished, Wang Qian thought for a moment, then explained with a smile:

”Ms. Song, as far as I know, a laparoscopic appendectomy is the gold standard for acute appendicitis. Compared to traditional open surgery, it has the fastest recovery and minimal trauma.”

”Furthermore, the procedure we currently perform at our hospital has been optimized in terms of suturing and incision size. It’s an improvement over the conventional laparoscopic appendectomy.”

”Given your situation, conservative treatment has basically failed, so I recommend you have the surgery. However, scarring is unavoidable. We can only try to make it as minimal as possible.”

Wang Qian took a promotional brochure from his table and handed it to Song Pingping.

Song Pingping looked at some of the case photos from City Second Hospital and frowned. Clearly, the results didn’t meet her standards.

Song Pingping shook her head, stood up, and moved to the side. She started browsing the official accounts of other hospitals in Fan City and quickly opened the one for City First Hospital.

As a Fan City resident, she had been following City First Hospital for a long time, as had many of her friends.

She immediately noticed the latest post on City First Hospital’s official account. The headline read: ”A Brand-New Scarless Cosmetic Procedure: Wu’s Umbilical Appendectomy, Bringing Patients the Ultimate Scar-Free Cosmetic Experience.”

Song Pingping’s eyes lit up. She clicked on it immediately and saw the introduction and future prospects of this Surgical Technique.

”I can’t believe there’s such an advanced cosmetic Surgical Technique.”

”It’s just a shame that it was just launched, so there aren’t any real case photos to look at.”

Song Pingping forwarded the link to her boyfriend.

Her boyfriend was dark and thin, with somewhat rugged features and a particularly high-bridged nose. He began to read the post Song Pingping had sent him.

”What do you think?”

Song Pingping asked.

Her boyfriend thought for a moment. ”Well, I think that this Surgical Technique from City First Hospital sounds impressive, but it’s still in the initial promotional phase and doesn’t have many case studies. Plus, it’s being done by the emergency department.”

”From my perspective, for an appendectomy, it’s best to go to the relevant specialty department. General surgery is definitely more specialized than the emergency department. Besides, the laparoscopic appendectomy at City Second Hospital is already a very mature procedure, and its results are much better than a conventional laparoscopic surgery.”

”And Director Yao is very experienced. He has over a hundred thousand followers on Kuaiyin.”

Her boyfriend favored the General Surgery Department at City Second Hospital.

”Hmph, what do you know?”

Song Pingping sent her boyfriend another post from City First Hospital and said coldly:

”The emergency department at City First Hospital just completed an extremely difficult Suspended Gasless Abdominal Laparoscopic Appendectomy, a first in the province.”

”Go ask Director Yao from City Second Hospital if he can do that! Can he?”

Song Pingping tapped on the screen, pointing at Yao Shi’s previous analysis of that super-elderly patient, where he had no solution other than transferring them to a higher-level hospital.

”That’s enough. I’ve decided. I’m going to the emergency department at City First Hospital.”

”I’m the one having the surgery, not you! A mature technique with obvious flaws versus a cutting-edge, scar-free cosmetic procedure... Do you have any idea what the pursuit of art means to a dancer?”

Song Pingping grabbed her boyfriend and prepared to head to City First Hospital.

This small incident was a sign of a larger trend, and stories like Song Pingping’s began to ferment and spread among the crowd at City Second Hospital’s free clinic.

Li Baohua, the head director of the General Surgery Department at City Second Hospital, found a moment to stroll through the outpatient hall, observing the lively and bustling free clinic.

He asked a junior doctor beside him, ”How’s the free clinic going today?”

The junior doctor praised, ”The turnout for the clinic today is huge. Many people have left their contact information to make appointments, and quite a few have already completed admission procedures. Director Yao is going to schedule their surgeries right after the clinic ends today.”

”Speaking of which, Director Yao is really amazing. Thanks to his popularity on Kuaiyin, he attracted a huge number of patients for consultations. It looks like our department is going to be busy for a while.”

”Director Yao also promised to give us junior doctors some opportunities to get practical experience.”

Hearing the junior doctor’s words, Li Baohua was very satisfied.

”Good, good. Yao Shi did a great job this time. It seems my application to the hospital for funding, and the manpower and resources we spent to launch this free clinic, weren’t in vain.”

As Li Baohua made his rounds, his gaze met that of Yao Shi, who was diligently serving patients.

Yao Shi, looking triumphant and pleased with himself, gave Director Li a nod.

Director Li waved back, signaling for him to carry on.

The free clinic event didn’t officially end until the afternoon. By then, all of the printed promotional brochures had been given out.

Yao Shi stayed until just after two in the afternoon before being the first to leave. By his estimation, the department now had enough patients to keep them busy for a while.

After Yao Shi left, only a few doctors remained at the clinic.

At 4:30 PM, the entire free clinic event concluded. Wang Qian stood up and stretched his stiff body. The number of patients who had made appointments today was significant; he himself had registered no fewer than ten people on his form.

’This time, I really rode on Director Yao’s coattails. He promised I could be the lead surgeon on a few upcoming operations. This is a great opportunity. Besides making money, I’ll also get some practice.’

Just as Wang Qian was packing up and preparing to return to his office, he suddenly saw a few familiar faces.

’Huh? Aren’t those the patients who scheduled surgery and were about to complete their admission procedures?’

Among them were a few young women who were quite pretty with excellent figures; Wang Qian remembered them clearly.

’What’s going on? It looks like they’re not planning to have surgery in our department anymore.’

Wang Qian immediately took out his form and started calling the contact numbers.

A few of the patients hung up on him directly. Others said a quick ”sorry” before hanging up.

Clearly, they had found another option.

’Hm? What happened?’

Wang Qian carefully reviewed the list of patients who had scheduled appointments, and upon checking, he found that most of them had left early.

’Practice my ass! Was this whole free clinic a waste of time?’

Wang Qian realized the severity of the problem. But right now, both Director Li and Director Yao were in high spirits, and he didn’t want to be the one to burst their bubble.

The thought of having to hand over his shift tomorrow, submit the collated patient registration information, do rounds with Director Yao, and formulate surgical plans gave Wang Qian a headache.

’I just hope Director Yao can handle it tomorrow. This is going to be a huge embarrassment.’
