Chapter 83: Chapter 83: Dr. Wu Goes on a Rampage

Screenshots of the comments flashed across the screen:

”...In recent years, some industry associations, academic institutions, and hospital media have closed their doors to entertain themselves by creating so-called ’star doctors’ and ’genius doctors’...”

”...These are often doctors who are packaged for being photogenic, having a good presence, and being eye-catching...”

”...These doctors only know how to market themselves. They never step into a front-line operating room and disregard patient feedback and public opinion. Patients and ordinary people have no say. The public doesn’t recognize or buy into doctors like that.”

”...Based on my decades of experience, a young doctor like Wu Ting couldn’t possibly possess such comprehensive abilities...”

”...Let alone master so many surgical techniques, propose a combined National Medicine and modern medicine Tracheotomy, and also be able to perform City First Hospital’s first continuous blood purification therapy and promote the Haijin Gang Burn Fluid Replacement Formula? A young doctor like that? I’ve never seen one, nor have I ever heard of one...”

...

Wu Ting took out a sample issue of the *Jin Country Critical Care Medicine Journal* and copies of his own paper. He distributed the copies to the directors and experts present before placing the original sample issue in front of Yao Shi.

”Director Yao, you previously stated that it was impossible for me to master these surgical techniques, and impossible for me to propose a combined National Medicine and modern medicine Tracheotomy.”

”As it happens, this paper of mine has just been published. It’s in the *Jin Country Critical Care Medicine Journal*, a national-level core journal. I don’t suppose that can be faked, can it?”

When Wu Ting presented the paper, all the directors present were stunned. This was the *Jin Country Critical Care Medicine Journal*, a national-level core journal!

The doctors from the emergency and critical care medicine departments were especially envious. A paper like this meant promotions and raises; it meant status in the industry!

The directors began to read it. Having passed the review and scrutiny of Shen Guofeng and the editorial department of the *Jin Country Critical Care Medicine Journal*, the quality of the paper was naturally beyond question.

Yao Shi’s hands trembled slightly as he held the sample issue.

He was just a director of general surgery. He could understand a Tracheotomy, but when it came to a National Medicine prescription, he was completely lost.

He was particularly impressed by Wu Ting’s formulation for the Clearing Heat, Dissolving Phlegm, and Promoting Bowel Movement Method, though he didn’t understand it at all.

If it had been a draft of the paper, Yao Shi might have been able to find some errors and save face. But this was an officially published version. How could he possibly find a problem with the paper?

Most importantly, it involved a multidisciplinary combination, which he couldn’t possibly evaluate on his own.

”Director Yao, I wonder what you think of my National Medicine syndrome score?”

”Director Yao, do you have any opinions on the ratio of Semen Persicae, Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, Caulis Bambusae... in my formulation?”

”Director Yao, in National Medicine, the gallbladder, stomach, large intestine, small intestine, triple burner, and bladder are called the Six Fu-Organs. This Clearing Heat, Dissolving Phlegm, and Promoting Bowel Movement Method is a classic prescription. I simply combined it with the Western medical procedure of Tracheotomy...”

Wu Ting didn’t give Yao Shi any quarter. Director Huo had gone to great lengths to set this stage for him, so of course, every blow had to be fatal, aimed not just to defeat but to demoralize.

How could Yao Shi possibly answer Wu Ting’s sincere tone and razor-sharp questions?

Seeing Yao Shi’s silence, Wu Ting muttered to himself,

”Right. Director Yao is a general surgeon. He might have dabbled in emergency surgery, but he probably has no understanding of the field of National Medicine.”

Wu Ting looked up at Yao Shi.

”Director Yao, is it that you don’t understand National Medicine?”

Wu Ting’s tone grew heavier.

Yao Shi looked up at the young man, not expecting him to be so utterly disrespectful. His face flushed red, and he couldn’t say a word. When had he ever studied National Medicine? What respectable general surgeon would go and research the Clearing Heat, Dissolving Phlegm, and Promoting Bowel Movement Method?

”So you really don’t understand.”

Wu Ting sighed. His voice wasn’t loud, but every word hammered into Yao Shi’s heart.

”So you can just spout nonsense on social media about things you don’t understand.”

Wu Ting’s words came out like a machine gun:

”Then let’s talk about something a surgeon should be able to understand.”

At his side, Cheng Feng immediately understood and switched the PowerPoint slide to the one on continuous blood purification therapy.

A photo of a brand-new machine and filter components appeared.

”Director Yao, what are your thoughts on this equipment and its components?”

Yao Shi followed Wu Ting’s gaze to the screen. Even City First Hospital had only procured one of these advanced machines for Jiang Ming after he returned from his advanced studies. How could the general surgery department at City Second Hospital have ever seen one?

Yao Shi wanted to say something, but he opened his mouth and then clamped it shut.

Beside him, Li Baohua, the Director of General Surgery from City Second Hospital, frowned. However, Yao Shi had attacked Wu Ting on social media first. It was only reasonable for the young man to seek clarification face-to-face today.

Looking at the disgraced Yao Shi, Li Baohua shifted in his seat with disgust.

”Director Yao, look, this is a Baxter Bm25 (Southern Country) blood purification device. This is a filter with an AN69 membrane and a surface area of 1.60 m²...”

”As for the method of continuous blood purification therapy...”

”Its observational indicators and diagnostic criteria are...”

Wu Ting reeled off various data points and operational techniques with ease, his demeanor poised and elegant.

How could the directors present not see it by now? There was no way this Wu Ting was as incompetent as Director Yao had claimed. He had well and truly mastered these surgical techniques and skills.

Shen Guofeng, Jin Yu, and Zhang Zhong were also seeing such a sharp-tongued Wu Ting for the first time.

However, these medical forums, while called ”exchanges,” were in reality battlegrounds for defending one’s reputation and flexing one’s rhetorical muscles. As old hands in the field, they had all experienced, participated in, and witnessed vicious, tense, and utterly satisfying verbal brawls!

If you make a mistake, you own it. If you take a hit, you stand up straight!

No one thought Wu Ting was going too far. If Yao Shi’s comments had been directed at any other young doctor, their career would have been ruined.

Watching the pathetic state of Yao Shi, Jiang Ming and Cheng Feng felt a great sense of satisfaction from the sidelines.

”Brother Ting is really sharp.”

However, this also demonstrated the solidity of Wu Ting’s fundamental skills. Otherwise, how could he possibly rebuke Director Yao so severely under the sharp eyes of so many experts?

His paper in a national-level core journal, in particular, was devastatingly effective. No matter how thick-skinned or stubborn one was, it was useless. This was true damage; it broke right through his defenses!

Just then, Huo Yun also spoke up, adding fuel to the fire for Wu Ting.

”Director Yao, why have you gone quiet?”

”Have you realized you’re a layman in these fields?”

”It’s true that not just anyone can master so many surgical techniques and have such a wide range of knowledge.”

”So, Director Yao, there’s always a higher mountain and a better person. Don’t use your own shallowness to judge the abilities of others.”

”You’re a layman, but our Dr. Wu is a true expert!”

Yao Shi’s face was ashen. He clenched his jaw, his reputation completely shattered!

”Some learn before others, and every trade has its master. Yao Shi indeed said things he shouldn’t have and made comments he shouldn’t have made.”

”On behalf of Director Yao, I would like to apologize to all the doctors of City First Hospital, especially Dr. Wu. After we return, we will immediately delete the relevant comments and issue a public apology.”

”Dr. Wu is truly talented and his knowledge is extensive. He has really opened our eyes here at City Second Hospital today.”

Li Baohua finally couldn’t bear to watch any longer and stood up to save some face for Yao Shi.

”Today is for academic exchange, not a struggle session. Director Yao also brought his own research topic today. In his own area of expertise, he is still quite accomplished.”

Li Baohua thought, ’While Yao Shi was defenseless in the fields Huo Yun had brought up, he should at least be able to regain some face in his own area of expertise. Why did they have to go and provoke Huo Yun?’

How could Huo Yun not understand Li Baohua’s intentions? This was the very moment he had been waiting for.

”Director Li, you’re quite the peacemaker. A fine ’every trade has its master’ indeed.”

”Then let’s talk about something in Director Yao’s area of expertise. I hear Director Yao has been vigorously promoting laparoscopic appendectomy recently?”
