Kai stared at the words.

For several long seconds, he couldn’t hear anything else.

Not Daniel’s breathing.

Not Luna asking what was happening.

Not the distant hiss of steam from the two impossible trains.

His entire world had narrowed to the glowing letters carved into the rails.

KAI MERCER

And beneath them—

COMPATIBLE

The word shouldn’t have frightened him.

It was only a word.

Yet something about seeing it there made his stomach twist.

Because the railway hadn’t simply recognized him.

It had compared him to Adrian.

Measured him.

Judged him.

And reached a conclusion.

They belonged together.

Or worse...

They could be used together.

Kai slowly took a step back.

The letters remained.

They didn’t fade.

They didn’t flicker.

They simply waited.

”What does compatible mean?”

His voice sounded calmer than he felt.

The conductor didn’t answer.

Kai looked directly at him.

”I asked you a question.”

The old man’s jaw tightened.

”It means the Choice Line believes your story can support his.”

Kai frowned.

”Support his?”

”Adrian has no beginning.”

The conductor’s gaze shifted toward the young man.

”You have one.”

Kai folded his arms.

”So?”

”So the railway has identified you as an anchor.”

The stranger beside the pale train finally spoke.

”And an anchor is exactly what someone without a beginning needs.”

Adrian looked between them.

”Why me?”

The stranger gave him a weary smile.

”Because you’re drifting.”

Then he looked at Kai.

”And because he’s not.”

Daniel snorted.

”That’s probably the most accurate explanation we’ve gotten all night.”

No one disagreed.

Kai ignored him.

”You’re saying Adrian needs me because I have a story.”

”No.”

The stranger shook his head.

”I’m saying the Choice Line chose you because your story is strong enough to survive being rewritten.”

Kai’s expression hardened instantly.

”That’s supposed to make me feel better?”

”No.”

The stranger’s smile vanished.

”It should make you very afraid.”

The Choice Line pulsed.

Once.

The rails glowed brighter.

The names shifted.

KAI MERCER

ADRIAN

The two names slowly moved closer together.

A new line appeared beneath them.

BEGINNING REQUIRED

Silence swept across the station.

Kai felt something cold slide down his spine.

The stranger saw it too.

His expression changed immediately.

”That’s not good.”

The conductor turned sharply.

”What?”

The stranger pointed toward the rails.

”It’s asking for a beginning.”

The conductor’s eyes widened.

”Already?”

”It’s hungry.”

The old man’s face darkened.

He looked toward the crowd.

Then toward Adrian.

”No.”

His voice became urgent.

”No, no, no...”

He stepped forward.

”Everyone away from the line.”

This time, people listened.

Not because they understood.

Because they heard fear in his voice.

The old woman holding a wedding ring stepped back.

The wounded soldier lowered his helmet.

The nurse grabbed the hand of the little girl beside her.

One by one, the waiting passengers retreated.

But not everyone.

Oliver remained where he was.

The little boy stood several yards down the Choice Line, his hand wrapped around the invisible figure beside him.

He looked directly at Kai.

His expression had changed.

The happiness was gone.

Only sadness remained.

”Are you coming?”

Kai’s blood ran cold.

Oliver wasn’t speaking to Adrian.

He was speaking to him.

”No.”

Kai answered immediately.

The boy tilted his head.

”Why?”

”Because I don’t belong there.”

Oliver smiled.

A sad, knowing smile.

”You did before.”

Kai froze.

”What?”

The invisible figure beside Oliver moved.

For the first time...

Kai saw something.

Not a body.

Not a face.

Only a faint silhouette hidden beneath layers of darkness.

A hand.

A shoulder.

The outline of someone standing just beyond sight.

Kai couldn’t make out their features.

But something deep inside him recognized them.

The same impossible feeling he’d experienced before.

Like remembering something that had never happened.

Oliver squeezed the invisible hand.

”She says you promised.”

Kai couldn’t breathe.

”I promised what?”

The boy’s smile faded.

”That you’d come back.”

The station vanished.

A memory slammed into him.

A white room.

A desk.

Pages scattered across every surface.

Someone sitting opposite him.

Their face blurred beyond recognition.

A fountain pen resting between them.

A blank sheet of paper waiting on the desk.

The stranger’s voice echoed somewhere behind him.

”You can’t keep writing him like this.”

Kai heard himself answer.

”Then I’ll fix it.”

”You always say that.”

”Because I will.”

”And what happens when you forget?”

Silence.

Then his own voice again.

Soft.

Certain.

”I won’t.”

The memory shattered.

Kai staggered backward.

Luna caught him before he fell.

”Kai!”

He stared at her.

His heart pounded wildly.

”What...”

His voice barely worked.

”What was that?”

The stranger was already watching him.

For the first time since arriving...

There was genuine fear in his eyes.

”You remembered.”

Kai looked at him.

”Remembered what?”

”The promise.”

Kai shook his head.

”I’ve never made that promise.”

The stranger glanced toward the Choice Line.

”Not in this life.”

The words hit harder than any revelation so far.

Kai stared.

”Then when?”

The stranger didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The answer was already taking shape.

Before the story.

Before the station.

Before the first Chapter.

There had been something else.

A conversation.

A decision.

A promise.

Someone waiting.

Someone he had forgotten.

The rails screamed.

The sound tore through the station like metal being ripped apart.

Everyone covered their ears.

The Choice Line erupted with blinding white light.

Passengers scattered.

The warm locomotive roared to life.

The pale train answered immediately.

For the first time—

Both trains moved.

Not forward.

Backward.

Their wheels turned in opposite directions, dragging their carriages away from the station while the Choice Line remained fixed between them.

The conductor shouted something.

Kai couldn’t hear it.

The entire station shook.

Stone cracked.

Glass exploded outward from the station windows.

Outside—

The frozen city moved again.

Cars accelerated through intersections.

Streetlights flickered.

Sirens echoed through distant streets.

Time had resumed.

But inside Ashbridge Station...

Something fundamental had changed.

Adrian suddenly collapsed.

Kai spun around.

”Adrian!”

He rushed toward him.

The young man was on his knees, both hands pressed against his head.

”I...”

He gasped.

”I remember someone.”

Kai crouched beside him.

”Who?”

”I don’t know.”

”Try.”

Adrian squeezed his eyes shut.

”There was...”

He struggled for breath.

”...a room.”

Kai’s heart stopped.

”A white room?”

Adrian’s eyes snapped open.

”Yes.”

Kai stared.

”You saw it too?”

Adrian nodded frantically.

”There was a desk.”

”A chair.”

”A piece of paper.”

His breathing steadied slightly.

”And...”

He looked directly at Kai.

”You were there.”

The world tilted.

”What did I say?”

Adrian stared at him.

Then repeated the words slowly.

”I’ll fix it.”

Kai froze.

The same words.

The same promise.

The same memory.

Adrian reached toward him.

”Kai...”

But before he could continue—

The Choice Line went dark.

Every glowing letter vanished.

The station fell silent.

For one heartbeat...

Nothing happened.

Then black words appeared.

Not on the rails.

Not on the departure board.

Everywhere.

Across the station walls.

Across the ceiling.

Across the windows.

Across the side of the locomotives.

Massive black letters spread through Platform Zero.

BEGIN AGAIN

The stranger stared at them.

His face became impossibly pale.

”No...”

The conductor looked toward Kai.

And whispered something that turned his blood to ice.

”That’s not the Choice Line.”

Kai turned slowly.

”Then what is it?”

The old man’s eyes drifted toward the darkness beneath the station.

Toward something buried far below the rails.

Something ancient.

Something awake.

”It’s the Author.”

Silence.

Then a sound rose from beneath Ashbridge Station.

Not a train.

Not a heartbeat.

Not a voice.

A pen scratching across paper.

Once.

Twice.

Then again.

The sound echoed through the foundations of the station.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Patient.

And somewhere beneath Platform Zero...

Something began writing the first sentence of a story that Kai had already lived.
