Yandere Stream

No one spoke after that.

A strange silence settled over the apartment, heavy enough to make the air feel thicker. Adrian remained seated at the kitchen table, his gaze fixed on the wooden surface in front of him. He wasn’t really looking at it. His eyes were distant, unfocused, as though Kai’s question had reached somewhere deeper than memory and stirred something he couldn’t quite grasp.

Across from him, Daniel shifted awkwardly in his chair. Normally, he would have thrown out a joke by now. He hated uncomfortable silences and usually attacked them with sarcasm. This time, however, even he seemed to understand that the moment demanded patience.

Finally, Adrian exhaled.

”I don’t know.”

His voice sounded hollow.

”I’ve looked in mirrors every day. I shave. I brush my teeth. I fix my hair before work.” He frowned and rubbed his forehead. ”But I can’t remember ever recognizing myself.”

Nobody interrupted.

Adrian swallowed and continued. ”You know that feeling when you see someone after years apart? You know who they are, but for a second your brain doesn’t connect the face to the person?”

Kai nodded slightly.

”That’s how I feel every morning,” Adrian admitted. ”I look in the mirror and there’s this brief moment where the person staring back at me feels like a stranger.”

Luna’s expression softened.

”Every morning?”

Adrian nodded.

”It only lasts a few seconds. Then everything feels normal again. I always assumed I was tired.” He laughed weakly. ”Or maybe losing my mind.”

Daniel leaned back in his chair and folded his arms.

”I’ve known people with memory problems before. My grandfather had dementia.”

The humor had vanished from his voice.

”This doesn’t sound like that.”

”No,” Kai said quietly. ”It doesn’t.”

Outside, afternoon sunlight slowly began fading toward evening. Golden rays stretched across the apartment floor, crawling over moving boxes and climbing the kitchen cabinets. The city beyond the windows continued its routine without concern for forgotten stories, impossible narrators, or missing identities.

For several minutes nobody spoke.

Oddly enough, the silence wasn’t uncomfortable.

Months ago, Kai would have been desperate to fill it. He would have searched for clues, chased explanations, demanded answers from anything that looked remotely supernatural.

Now he had learned something important.

Sometimes people needed space to think.

Sometimes answers arrived only after silence.

Eventually Noah pushed himself to his feet.

”I’m making coffee.”

Daniel blinked.

”Didn’t we literally just have coffee?”

Noah looked completely serious.

”That was twenty-three minutes ago.”

Daniel stared at him.

Then he slowly nodded.

”Yeah, you’ve definitely become one of us.”

A small smile appeared on Noah’s face.

”I’ve noticed coffee seems important around here.”

”It is,” Luna said immediately.

”It’s practically a survival requirement.”

The tension eased slightly as the conversation drifted toward normal things. They debated coffee brands. Daniel passionately defended instant coffee as a gift to humanity while Luna informed him that his opinion was objectively wrong. Noah listened with amusement, occasionally asking questions that somehow made the argument even more ridiculous.

Kai found himself watching rather than participating.

The laughter felt fragile.

Like glass ornaments hanging from a tree.

Beautiful.

Temporary.

Worth protecting.

For a moment he allowed himself to enjoy it.

Then the kettle began to whistle.

Noah turned toward the stove.

And froze.

The whistle didn’t stop.

Instead, it grew louder.

Higher.

Sharper.

The sound twisted into something unnatural.

Kai immediately sat upright.

The pitch continued climbing until it no longer resembled steam escaping from metal.

It sounded like feedback from an old microphone.

A piercing electronic shriek.

Kai was on his feet instantly.

The others looked around in confusion.

”You hear that?” he asked.

”Hear what?” Daniel replied.

”The kettle,” Luna said. ”Sounds normal to me.”

Kai looked toward Noah.

Noah’s face had gone pale.

”You hear it too.”

Slowly, Noah nodded.

”It isn’t the kettle.”

The sound rose even higher.

Higher.

Higher.

Until it suddenly stopped.

Dead silence crashed into the apartment.

Then a voice crackled through the room.

Not from a phone.

Not from a television.

Not from any speaker.

It came from nowhere.

”Testing.”

A burst of static followed.

”One...”

More static.

”Two...”

The voice sounded young.

Male.

Calm.

Oddly cheerful.

”Can anybody hear me?”

Kai exchanged a glance with Noah.

Only the two of them appeared to hear it.

”Yes,” Kai answered cautiously.

Luna frowned.

”Kai?”

He raised a hand, signaling her to wait.

The unseen voice brightened immediately.

”Oh.”

A relieved laugh followed.

”Good.”

”Good?” Kai repeated.

”I was beginning to think this frequency was dead.”

Kai felt a chill run down his spine.

”Who are you?”

There was a pause.

”Hm.”

The voice sounded genuinely thoughtful.

”I don’t actually know.”

A nervous laugh followed.

”I was hoping you might.”

The apartment remained perfectly still.

Noah slowly removed the kettle from the stove.

The voice continued.

”I’ve been broadcasting for...” Another pause. ”I don’t know.”

”You don’t know?”

”Time works strangely where I am.”

Kai narrowed his eyes.

”Where are you?”

”If I knew that,” the voice replied cheerfully, ”I probably wouldn’t be calling.”

Noah carefully set the kettle aside.

”It’s another one.”

Kai nodded slightly.

Not an abandoned character.

Not a forgotten narrator.

Something else.

Something entirely new.

”Can anyone else hear you?” Kai asked.

”I don’t think so.”

”Why me?”

The answer came immediately.

”I don’t know.”

Then the voice hesitated.

”But you’re the first person who’s ever answered.”

The words hit harder than Kai expected.

He remembered Finn.

Waiting since Chapter One.

Forgotten by everyone.

Now another voice was reaching through the darkness, searching for someone willing to listen.

How many were there?

How many people existed between stories?

How many had spent years calling into silence?

The apartment suddenly felt smaller.

The static grew louder.

”No,” the voice muttered.

Its tone changed instantly.

”What?” Kai asked.

”Not yet.”

The interference intensified.

”They found the signal.”

Kai frowned.

”Who found it?”

For the first time, the voice sounded frightened.

”I have to go.”

”Wait.”

”If you want to find me...”

The sentence dissolved into static.

”...follow...”

More interference swallowed the words.

”...the station...”

Kai stepped forward.

”The station?”

The signal crackled violently.

”...last train...”

”...midnight...”

”...don’t miss—”

The transmission vanished.

Silence returned.

The apartment became normal again.

The kettle sat quietly on the counter.

The evening sunlight remained unchanged.

Nothing suggested anything extraordinary had happened.

Daniel blinked.

”Okay.”

Everyone looked at him.

”Are we making coffee or not?”

Kai stared.

”You didn’t hear any of that?”

Daniel frowned.

”Hear what?”

Kai looked toward Luna.

She shook her head.

”I only heard the kettle.”

Then Kai turned to Noah.

Noah met his gaze.

”I heard every word.”

Near the window, the little girl stood perfectly still.

For once, she didn’t look amused.

She looked worried.

”The station...”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

”I thought it disappeared.”

Kai immediately turned toward her.

”What station?”

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she gazed out the window toward the distant horizon.

Past the apartment buildings.

Past the city skyline.

Toward a place where no train tracks should have existed.

The fading sunlight reflected in her eyes as she spoke.

”There are places stories use to travel.”

A cold feeling settled in Kai’s chest.

The little girl’s gaze never left the horizon.

”And one of them...”

She paused.

Then slowly took a breath.

”...is about to arrive.”
