150 Chapter 150: The First Story 2026-10-14

The little girl was gone.

Kai pushed through the café door so quickly that the bell above it rang twice.

The sudden rush of warm summer air hit his face.

For a brief second, he expected to see her standing exactly where she’d been moments ago.

Waiting.

Watching.

Smiling.

Instead, the sidewalk was crowded with strangers.

A family pushing a stroller.

Two office workers carrying iced coffee.

A teenager weaving through pedestrians on a skateboard.

An elderly man walking a golden retriever.

A cyclist ringing a bell as he passed.

Life.

Ordinary life.

No little girl.

No yellow dress.

No brown curls.

Nothing.

”Kai?”

Luna stepped out behind him.

Concern immediately entered her voice.

He barely heard her.

His eyes searched the street.

Left.

Right.

Across the road.

Behind parked cars.

Near the bus stop.

Nothing.

His heartbeat quickened.

He crossed the street.

Fast.

Almost running.

The exact spot where the girl had stood was empty.

No footprints.

No dropped crayon.

No forgotten toy.

Nothing except ordinary concrete baking beneath the summer sun.

”Kai.”

Luna finally caught up and grabbed his wrist.

”What happened?”

Only then did he stop.

He looked down at her hand around his arm.

Warm.

Real.

Solid.

Unlike everything else lately.

Unlike dreams.

Unlike stories.

Unlike impossible places.

Just Luna.

Just reality.

Or at least...

What he hoped was reality.

”I saw someone.”

Luna frowned.

”The guy?”

”No.”

Kai slowly shook his head.

”A little girl.”

Luna glanced around.

”I didn’t see anyone.”

”I know.”

Something about that answer bothered him.

Not because Luna hadn’t seen her.

Because part of him already knew she wouldn’t.

The girl felt...

Different.

Not hidden.

Not invisible.

Just somehow separate from everyone else.

Daniel and Noah emerged from the café a minute later.

Each carried a coffee.

Daniel held up Kai’s forgotten cup.

”You sprinted out without this.”

Kai accepted it.

The warmth seeped into his fingers.

Grounding him.

The smell of coffee.

The weight of the cup.

The distant sound of traffic.

Everything felt tangible.

Real.

So why did reality keep slipping through his fingers?

Noah studied him quietly.

He didn’t ask questions.

Didn’t push.

Just watched.

As though he already understood more than he was saying.

The four of them continued walking.

Not because they had a destination.

Because none of them wanted the morning to end.

For once, there wasn’t a mystery demanding answers.

No countdown.

No threat.

No nightmare waiting behind the next door.

Just a city.

A normal city.

And four people wandering through it.

They visited a small bookstore tucked between two older buildings.

Daniel immediately got distracted by a shelf of fantasy novels.

Luna spent ten minutes arguing with him over which cover looked worse.

Kai laughed more during that conversation than he had in months.

Later, they stopped outside a movie theater.

A giant poster displayed an explosion large enough to destroy a continent.

Daniel pointed at it.

”That car definitely survives.”

”No way.”

”It survives.”

”It’s literally exploding.”

”Exactly.”

Luna rolled her eyes.

”You two are exhausting.”

Kai smiled.

Normal.

Everything felt wonderfully normal.

Even Noah seemed more relaxed.

Though only slightly.

Kai noticed something strange about him.

Whenever Noah smiled, it never completely reached his eyes.

Not because he was lying.

Not because he was hiding something.

Because he looked like someone waiting.

Waiting for permission.

Waiting for confirmation.

Waiting for something he couldn’t quite name.

Eventually they stopped for ice cream.

Noah stared at the menu longer than anyone else.

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

”Don’t tell me you’ve never had ice cream.”

Noah blinked.

Then shrugged.

”Not that I remember.”

Daniel nearly dropped his cone.

”You can’t be serious.”

”I’m serious.”

Luna stared at him.

”You’ve genuinely never eaten ice cream?”

”I think so.”

Kai frowned.

”What does that even mean?”

Noah looked embarrassed.

”My memory before arriving here is...”

He paused.

Searching.

”Spotty.”

Daniel laughed.

”That’s one way to describe it.”

Kai noticed Noah wasn’t joking.

The answer genuinely bothered him.

Like he wanted to remember.

Like there was something important just beyond reach.

Something he almost understood.

But not quite.

The afternoon drifted by.

Eventually they found themselves in a park.

Children ran across open fields.

Dogs chased tennis balls.

Water sparkled inside a nearby fountain.

The sky was impossibly blue.

For once, nobody felt the need to fill the silence.

Kai leaned back against the bench.

The breeze brushed against his face.

”...This is nice.”

Luna smiled.

”It is.”

No further explanation was needed.

For several peaceful minutes, the world simply existed.

No stories.

No authors.

No witnesses.

No endings.

Just people.

Just life.

Then—

A soft scraping sound broke the quiet.

Kai opened his eyes.

Across the sidewalk sat a little girl.

His heart immediately stopped.

Yellow dress.

Brown curls.

The same girl.

She sat beneath a maple tree with a box of crayons beside her.

Nobody reacted.

Nobody looked at her.

It was as if she existed slightly outside everyone else’s attention.

She calmly drew on the sidewalk with white chalk.

A house.

A tree.

A smiling sun.

Simple.

Ordinary.

Kai slowly stood.

”I’m gonna...”

Luna looked up.

”Hm?”

”...Be right back.”

He crossed the grass.

The little girl never looked up.

She kept drawing.

Kai stopped several feet away.

”Hi.”

Without raising her head, she answered.

”Hi.”

Her voice sounded cheerful.

Young.

Normal.

”My name’s Kai.”

”I know.”

Kai blinked.

”You do?”

She nodded.

”You’ve been very busy.”

He crouched beside her.

”What’re you drawing?”

”My tomorrow.”

The answer was so matter-of-fact that he almost laughed.

Instead, he studied the drawing.

A woman.

A dog.

A picnic blanket.

The little girl herself.

And one more figure.

A man standing beneath a tree.

Watching over them.

Kai pointed.

”Who’s that?”

The girl finally looked up.

Straight into his eyes.

”You.”

Silence.

Kai smiled awkwardly.

”I don’t think so.”

”You don’t remember yet.”

His smile disappeared.

”...Remember what?”

The little girl ignored the question.

Instead, she held out a white crayon.

”Would you help?”

Kai hesitated.

Then accepted it.

”What should I draw?”

She pointed upward.

”The sky looks lonely.”

Kai laughed softly.

”So I fix that?”

”Please.”

”What should I draw?”

”A bird.”

Kai examined the crayon.

”I’m warning you.”

”I’m terrible at drawing.”

”So am I.”

The girl smiled.

”That’s why it’s fun.”

For the first time, Kai smiled back.

He began drawing.

The bird looked awful.

One wing was larger than the other.

Its beak looked ridiculous.

Its legs barely existed.

When he finished, the girl clapped enthusiastically.

”Perfect.”

Kai stared.

”It’s objectively terrible.”

”It’s yours.”

The girl grinned.

”That makes it perfect.”

The words hit him harder than expected.

Because they sounded familiar.

Like something he’d been trying to learn his entire life.

Not everything needed to be flawless.

Not everything needed a purpose.

Sometimes things mattered simply because they belonged to someone.

”Excuse me.”

Kai looked up.

A woman stood nearby.

She smiled apologetically.

”I’m sorry.”

”My daughter bothering you?”

Kai glanced downward.

The sidewalk was empty.

His breath caught.

No crayons.

No chalk box.

No little girl.

Only the crooked bird remained.

”...Your daughter?”

The woman pointed toward the playground.

”There she is.”

A young girl waved from the swings.

Different hair.

Different clothes.

Different face.

Not her.

Not even close.

Kai looked back down.

The bird remained.

Nothing else.

”...Sorry.”

The woman smiled kindly and walked away.

Kai remained frozen.

The crooked bird sat alone on the pavement.

Then—

Two words slowly appeared beneath it.

As though an invisible hand was writing them.

Good choice.

Kai stared.

A breeze swept through the park.

The words scattered into white dust.

Gone.

Behind him, a voice spoke.

”You saw her again.”

Kai turned.

Noah stood there.

Watching the sidewalk.

Watching the fading chalk.

”You...”

Kai swallowed.

”...You can see her?”

Noah nodded.

”I couldn’t before.”

”But now?”

He looked toward the place where the words had vanished.

”Now I can.”

Silence stretched between them.

The sounds of the park seemed distant.

Muted.

Unimportant.

Kai asked the question that had been growing in his mind since the café.

”...Who is she?”

Noah didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked up at the sky.

As though searching for something hidden beyond it.

When he finally spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper.

”I think...”

He paused.

Then looked directly at Kai.

”...she’s the first character that was never supposed to exist.”
