Yandere Stream

The sound came from beneath the rails.

Not loud. Not violent.

A single heartbeat.

Thump.

The platform trembled so gently that Daniel wasn’t even sure it had happened.

”Did you feel that?”

Kai didn’t answer. His attention was fixed entirely on the little boy.

He couldn’t have been older than seven. His brown sweater was patched at both elbows, and one lace on his left shoe had come undone, dragging across the platform as he walked. A worn stuffed rabbit rested beneath his arm, one button eye missing and its ears thinned from years of being held.

There was nothing unnatural about him. Nothing ghostly. Nothing transparent.

If Kai had seen him outside an elementary school, he would have assumed the child was waiting for his parents.

The boy stopped only a few feet from the Choice Line.

”Mom?”

His voice echoed softly through the station.

”I know you’re hiding.”

He smiled to himself.

”You always play this game.”

No answer came, yet he wasn’t discouraged. Children rarely were.

The conductor slowly removed his cap.

Not out of politeness.

Out of grief.

Kai noticed immediately.

”You know him.”

The conductor’s eyes never left the child.

”Yes.”

”Who is he?”

”A passenger.”

Kai shook his head.

”No. I mean who is he?”

The conductor took a long breath before answering.

”His name... was Oliver.”

Was.

Kai caught the word immediately.

Not is.

Was.

Oliver laughed quietly to himself.

”I found you.”

He wasn’t looking at anyone. Instead, he stared at the empty air above the tracks as though someone stood there—someone only he could see.

Then he took another step forward.

The Choice Line responded.

Its strange metallic surface shimmered and rippled softly, like moonlight dancing across still water.

”It reacted,” Kai said.

The stranger nodded.

”It recognized him.”

Luna’s instincts screamed that something was wrong.

She couldn’t explain why.

The child looked harmless. Lost. Lonely.

Everything inside her wanted to walk over, kneel beside him, and ask where his parents were.

Instead, she found herself taking a step backward.

”Kai.”

He looked at her.

”I don’t think...” She hesitated. ”...that’s really a little boy.”

Kai turned back.

Oliver was humming.

A lullaby.

Softly.

Almost absentmindedly.

The melody stirred something inside Kai—a memory of someone singing beside his bed when he was very young. He couldn’t remember the words, only the comfort.

His heartbeat slowed.

The tension left his shoulders.

For a moment, everything felt safe.

Then Noah grabbed his arm.

Hard.

”Kai.”

His voice shook.

”Don’t listen.”

Kai blinked.

”What?”

”The song.”

Noah looked terrified.

”It’s changing.”

Kai frowned.

”What do you mean?”

Noah pressed both hands against his ears.

”It isn’t the same anymore.”

Kai listened carefully.

At first, it was only a lullaby. Gentle. Familiar.

Then, very gradually, he noticed it.

One note.

Just one.

It didn’t belong.

The melody bent awkwardly around it before continuing.

Then another note changed.

Then another.

Like someone who knew the song but couldn’t quite remember how it ended.

The longer Oliver hummed, the more wrong it became.

Until Kai realized something horrifying.

The song wasn’t changing.

It was forgetting itself.

The stranger’s expression darkened.

”It’s happening faster.”

The conductor nodded grimly.

”The line is feeding.”

Kai turned sharply.

”Feeding on what?”

Neither man answered.

Instead, the little girl spoke.

”Memory.”

Everyone looked at her.

Her face had gone pale.

”The Choice Line doesn’t give memories back.”

She swallowed.

”It... borrows them.”

Silence followed.

A chill spread through Kai’s body.

Noah had remembered his mother, but only briefly.

Why?

Because the line had shown him the memory.

Not returned it.

Like opening a book in a library.

The book still belonged to someone else.

Oliver suddenly smiled.

”There you are!”

He held out his free hand.

”Come on.”

Kai’s blood ran cold.

The boy wasn’t talking to them.

He was looking directly at empty space.

Then something answered.

A second set of footprints appeared in the dust.

No body.

No shadow.

Just footprints.

Small.

Adult-sized.

Walking toward Oliver.

One step.

Then another.

Daniel’s flashlight trembled.

”Please tell me...” His voice cracked. ”...I’m imagining that.”

”You aren’t,” Luna whispered.

Oliver laughed happily.

”I knew you’d come.”

The invisible footsteps stopped in front of him.

He reached upward as though someone had taken his hand.

Kai couldn’t see anyone.

But he could see Oliver’s fingers curl around something.

Something invisible.

The boy beamed.

”I missed you.”

His eyes filled with tears.

”So much.”

The conductor closed his eyes.

”Don’t watch.”

Kai didn’t move.

”I said...” The conductor’s voice broke. ”...don’t watch.”

But it was already too late.

Oliver stepped onto the Choice Line.

Nothing happened.

He took another step.

The invisible hand remained wrapped around his own.

Then the boy looked back over his shoulder.

Not at Kai.

Not at anyone.

Just toward the station itself.

He smiled.

The sweetest smile Kai had seen in years.

Then he said one word.

”Goodbye.”

The world shattered.

Not physically.

Reality didn’t crack.

Instead, Kai felt something tear loose inside his mind.

A memory.

Small.

Insignificant.

Yet precious.

He couldn’t grasp it.

It slipped away before he even realized what it was.

Someone’s laugh.

Whose?

He reached for it instinctively.

Nothing.

Gone.

Around him, Daniel frowned.

”Wait.”

”What?” Luna asked.

”I...” He rubbed his forehead. ”...I forgot something.”

”What?”

”I don’t...” His face slowly paled. ”...remember.”

Oliver and the invisible figure continued walking farther down the Choice Line.

With every step they took, another tiny piece disappeared from the people watching.

Noah gasped.

”My school.”

Kai turned.

”What?”

”I...” Noah blinked repeatedly. ”...I can’t remember its name.”

Luna’s breathing quickened.

”My grandmother’s voice,” she whispered.

”I knew exactly what she sounded like.”

Her eyes widened.

Now there was only silence inside her memory.

Kai looked desperately toward the conductor.

”Stop this!”

”I can’t.”

”Why?”

”Because...” The old man looked older than ever before. ”...the line has accepted its first traveler.”

Kai clenched his fists.

”There has to be something!”

”There is.”

The conductor met his eyes.

”But if you do it...”

He hesitated.

”...someone else will have to stay behind.”

Kai didn’t even blink.

”I’ll do it.”

”No.”

The answer came from Luna.

Firm.

Immediate.

She stepped beside him without hesitation.

Without fear.

”No more deciding everything by yourself.”

Kai looked at her.

”Luna—”

”If someone has to stay...” She took a slow breath. ”...then we’re deciding that together.”

Before Kai could answer, a second child appeared at the far end of the platform.

Then a third.

An old man with a cane.

A young woman in a wedding dress.

A soldier carrying a dented helmet.

One by one, silent figures emerged from the shadows.

Each holding the hand of someone only they could see.

Each walking toward the Choice Line.

And the station began filling with people who had spent their entire lives waiting for one impossible chance to say goodbye.
