Yandere Stream

The words lingered in the air long after the conductor had spoken them.

”I’m afraid this is no longer a problem even I can solve.”

Kai had never expected to hear uncertainty from him. Since arriving at Ashbridge Station, the conductor had seemed less like a man and more like part of the railway itself—an ancient law given human form. Every movement had been deliberate, every answer measured. Even when surprised, he had remained composed. Now, for the first time, he looked tired. Not physically tired, but anciently tired, like someone who had watched the same sunrise for centuries only to discover one morning that the sun had risen from the wrong direction.

The station seemed to feel it as well.

The polished brass lamps flickered overhead. Steam no longer drifted lazily between the two trains but churned in slow circles, caught between opposing currents neither locomotive seemed willing to cross. Kai’s gaze moved from one train to the other. One glowed with warm amber light, comforting and familiar despite its impossible existence. The other shone with a pale, colorless white that seemed to drain warmth from everything around it. Neither moved. Neither attacked. It felt less like a battlefield and more like two ancient kingdoms standing face to face, each refusing to take the first step.

The stranger from the second train finally broke the silence.

”I didn’t come here to fight.”

The conductor regarded him calmly.

”I know.”

”I came because I had no choice.”

”I know.”

The stranger sighed and smiled faintly.

”You always know.”

”Most days.”

Something passed between them then, a quiet sadness born from years neither of them could fully remember. They didn’t look like enemies. They looked like two weary workers discussing a problem that had existed long before either of them had arrived.

Kai watched the exchange with growing curiosity.

”You two know each other.”

The conductor nodded.

”We’ve crossed paths.”

”Many times,” the stranger finished. ”Long before either of us forgot our names.”

Kai frowned.

”You forgot too?”

The man laughed softly and looked toward the frozen night sky above the station.

”Names are strange things. The longer your purpose exists, the less important your name becomes. What matters is whether anyone still remembers why you came.”

The words settled heavily in Kai’s mind.

He thought about Finn.

The little girl.

Noah.

Every impossible person he had met seemed to share the same fate. They weren’t forgotten because they failed. They were forgotten because people moved forward. New stories replaced old ones. New memories buried older ones beneath layers of time.

Was that what happened to everyone eventually?

Even ideas?

Even beginnings?

The thought sent a chill through him.

Before he could dwell on it further, Adrian suddenly spoke.

His voice was so quiet that everyone instinctively turned toward him.

”...I’m sorry.”

Kai blinked.

”For what?”

Adrian lowered his head.

”If this is happening because of me...”

”It isn’t.”

The answer left Kai’s mouth immediately.

”You don’t know that.”

”No,” Kai admitted. ”I don’t.”

The honesty surprised even him.

”But I know this.”

He stepped closer.

”You didn’t ask for any of this.”

Adrian looked away.

”I don’t even know who I am.”

Kai smiled faintly.

”Neither did Noah.”

Noah glanced up in surprise.

”And?”

Kai shrugged.

”We figured it out one step at a time.”

A small smile appeared on Noah’s face.

”Mostly.”

Daniel immediately pointed at him.

”He’s still weird.”

”I heard that.”

”I wanted you to.”

Luna rolled her eyes.

For the first time since arriving at the station, the tension eased. Only slightly. But enough for everyone to breathe again.

The stranger watched them quietly.

”You’ve changed.”

Kai looked at him.

”Have I?”

”When we first met.”

Kai frowned.

”We’ve never met.”

The stranger’s smile held no mockery.

”Haven’t we?”

Kai opened his mouth to argue, but a familiar pain suddenly flared behind his eyes.

The headache returned.

This time it wasn’t violent.

It was gentle.

Persistent.

And with it came fragments.

A library.

Dust floating through shafts of sunlight.

Rows of worn paperbacks.

A small boy reaching toward a shelf he couldn’t quite reach.

Another hand lifting a book down for him.

A voice.

”This one begins slowly.”

”Be patient.”

The memory vanished before Kai could hold onto it.

His breathing quickened.

”...That...”

The stranger nodded.

”You’re remembering.”

”My childhood?”

”No.”

The answer came immediately.

”Something older.”

Kai stared at him.

”Older than my childhood?”

The stranger nodded.

”Older than memory.”

The conductor released a long sigh.

”I was hoping you wouldn’t awaken those.”

”They’re already awakening.”

The stranger’s voice remained calm.

”You know that.”

”I do.”

The conductor’s gaze drifted toward Kai.

”But not here.”

”Not tonight.”

”They don’t have a choice anymore.”

Kai rubbed his forehead.

The entire conversation felt like listening to two doctors discuss a patient while pretending he wasn’t standing in the room.

”I’d appreciate it,” he interrupted, ”if both of you stopped talking like I’m not here.”

The stranger laughed.

”There he is.”

Kai frowned.

”What?”

”That stubbornness.”

The man’s smile widened slightly.

”It survived.”

”I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.”

”I know.”

A sudden gust of wind swept through the station.

Loose papers scattered across the abandoned ticket office burst into the air. Yellowed timetables, forgotten receipts, old schedules, and decades of abandoned records spiraled upward before drifting back toward the platform like oversized snowflakes.

One sheet landed against Kai’s shoe.

He bent and picked it up.

Immediately, something felt wrong.

The paper wasn’t old.

It looked brand new.

At the top, written in elegant black lettering, was a title.

Passenger Manifest

Below it stretched a long list.

Most of the lines were empty.

Near the bottom, however, one name had already been written.

Adrian

No surname.

No additional information.

Just Adrian.

Kai frowned.

He looked farther down.

There were no other names.

Only a single empty line beneath Adrian’s.

Then, very slowly, letters began appearing by themselves.

Not quickly.

Not dramatically.

One careful stroke at a time.

K.

Kai felt his stomach tighten.

Another letter appeared.

A.

The handwriting was elegant.

Patient.

As though whoever held the pen possessed endless time.

I.

Kai’s grip tightened around the page.

The next letter began to form.

Before it could finish, the manifest was ripped from his hands.

The conductor.

For the first time since Kai had met him, genuine urgency had replaced his calm expression.

Without saying a word, he tore the page in half.

Then again.

And again.

The fragments scattered into the wind before dissolving into tiny flecks of black ash.

The station fell silent.

Kai stared at him.

”What was that?”

The conductor’s jaw tightened.

”You were not meant to see that.”

”Why?”

For a moment, the old man didn’t answer.

He wasn’t searching for poetic words.

He was searching for the truth.

When he finally spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper.

”Passengers do not appear on the manifest...”

His gaze shifted toward the first train.

Then toward the second.

”...until they have already chosen to board.”

A cold weight settled in Kai’s chest.

Slowly, he turned toward the open carriage door of the first locomotive. Warm golden light still spilled across the platform, inviting and familiar. Then he looked toward the stranger’s silent train, where pale white light waited beyond the darkness.

Neither train had moved.

Neither had invited him aboard.

Yet somewhere beyond his sight, beyond his understanding, something had already begun writing his name.

And that frightened him far more than either train ever could.
