Yandere Stream

Kai didn’t move. The conductor’s gloved hand remained suspended between them, the cream-colored ticket resting across his palm. It looked ordinary enough—a rectangle of thick paper with slightly worn edges, the sort that might have been handed out at any railway station fifty years ago. Except it was completely blank. There was no destination, no departure time, no seat number, nothing at all. Steam drifted lazily between them, curling around the conductor’s wrist before dissolving into the cool night air. The station lights reflected faintly against the polished brass of the locomotive behind him, bathing the platform in a warm amber glow that felt strangely comforting.

Kai’s gaze shifted from the ticket to Adrian. The young man hadn’t taken his eyes off it. There was no greed in his expression, no excitement, only uncertainty, as though he were staring at a key without knowing what door it belonged to.

”You said it doesn’t belong to either of us,” Kai said.

”I did,” the conductor replied.

”Then why are you offering it to me?”

The conductor’s smile remained calm. ”Because there is a difference between ownership and responsibility.”

Kai frowned. ”And you’re giving me the responsibility.”

”I’m asking if you’ll accept it.”

”What’s the difference?”

A soft chuckle escaped the conductor. ”If I gave it to you, you would already have made your choice.” He gently closed his fingers around the ticket. ”But I haven’t. You may still refuse.”

Daniel let out a slow breath and rubbed the back of his neck. ”I don’t know about the rest of you, but every answer this guy gives somehow creates three more questions.”

The conductor inclined his head politely. ”An unfortunate occupational hazard.”

”No offense,” Daniel said, pointing toward the train, ”but were you born speaking like an old book?”

To Kai’s surprise, the conductor laughed. Not politely, but genuinely. The sound echoed warmly across the platform.

”I wasn’t.”

”What happened?”

”I grew old.”

Daniel blinked. ”Fair enough.”

Even Luna couldn’t completely hide the smile tugging at the corner of her lips, and for a brief moment the tension eased.

Kai looked down at the rails, which reflected the station lights like strips of liquid silver. ”You said this railway is for unfinished journeys.”

”Correct.”

”So why Adrian?”

The conductor followed his gaze. ”Tell me, what do you think trains are for?”

Kai frowned. ”They take people somewhere.”

”Do they?” the conductor asked. ”Or do they simply carry people after they’ve already decided where they wish to go?”

Kai remained silent.

”A train cannot choose your destination,” the conductor continued. ”It merely honors your decision.” His eyes drifted toward Adrian. ”But what happens when someone reaches the station before they know where they’re meant to go?”

No one answered because no one knew.

At last, Adrian stepped forward. His footsteps sounded unnaturally loud against the stone platform. ”I need to ask you something.”

”Of course.”

Adrian hesitated before speaking. ”Am I real?”

The question struck everyone like a physical blow. Luna closed her eyes. Daniel looked away. Noah lowered his head. Kai felt something twist painfully in his chest. No one should ever have to ask that.

The conductor didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he removed one white glove. His hands looked older than the rest of him, lined by countless years of work. He reached out and gently rested two fingers against Adrian’s forehead. Nothing happened. There was no light, no surge of magic, only silence. After several seconds he withdrew his hand and smiled.

”A strange question.”

Adrian’s shoulders sagged. ”Is that a yes or a no?”

”It’s a misunderstanding.”

”What?”

The conductor folded the glove neatly before slipping it back on. ”You believe reality is something you either possess or you don’t.” He shook his head. ”Reality isn’t ownership. It’s participation.”

Adrian stared at him. ”I don’t understand.”

”I know,” the conductor said softly. ”But listen carefully.”

He looked directly into Adrian’s eyes. ”Every person you’ve ever loved became real because they changed someone else’s life.”

His gaze shifted toward Kai. ”Every promise.”

Then Luna. ”Every friendship.”

Then Daniel. ”Every sacrifice.”

Then Noah. ”Every kindness.”

Finally, he looked back at Adrian.

”No one is born real. We become real through the lives we touch.”

The platform fell completely silent.

Kai felt those words settle somewhere deep inside him. He thought of Finn, a forgotten narrator whose name had vanished from memory, yet one bedtime story had remained with Noah for years. Finn had mattered—not because people remembered his name, but because they remembered how he made them feel. He thought of Noah, a character erased before his story had truly begun, yet someone who had already changed their lives simply by being here. Then he thought of himself. For so long he had believed his purpose was to finish stories, solve mysteries, and uncover truths. Maybe that had never been the point.

A quiet laugh broke the silence.

Everyone turned toward the little girl. She was smiling, not at anyone in particular, but simply smiling.

The conductor noticed. ”So, you remember this lesson.”

”A little,” she replied. ”I used to tell it better.”

The conductor’s expression grew wistful. ”You did.”

Kai looked between them. ”You’ve known each other for a long time.”

The conductor nodded. ”Longer than either of us remembers.”

Without warning, a distant whistle echoed through the station.

It didn’t come from the locomotive before them.

It came from somewhere else.

The conductor’s expression changed instantly. His smile vanished as he turned toward the darkness beyond Platform Zero. Another whistle answered the first, sharper and more aggressive. It carried none of the warmth or melancholy of the train behind him.

Kai noticed the conductor’s hand slowly tighten around his pocket watch.

”What’s wrong?” he asked.

The older man didn’t answer. He simply stared into the darkness. Steam no longer drifted peacefully across the tracks. It was being pulled, as though something enormous were approaching from the opposite direction. The polished rails began vibrating beneath their feet, not because of the train already standing in the station, but because of something else. Something heavier. Something faster.

When the conductor finally spoke, every trace of warmth had left his voice.

”That,” he said quietly, slipping the blank ticket back into his wallet, ”is a train that was never supposed to find this station.”

Another whistle screamed through the darkness. This one carried no sorrow, no loneliness, only hunger.

And somewhere beyond the veil of black mist, a second headlamp slowly opened like a golden eye.
