Yandere Stream

The drive across the city should have taken twenty minutes.

It took twelve.

Not because Daniel was speeding—though he certainly wasn’t driving slowly—but because the roads were unnaturally empty.

For a Saturday evening, the streets felt abandoned.

Traffic lights cycled through green, yellow, and red for cars that never came. Crosswalk signals flashed for pedestrians who weren’t there. Restaurants that had been bustling only an hour earlier now sat strangely quiet, their windows glowing over empty tables. Even the usual city noise seemed distant, muted beneath an invisible blanket.

Daniel frowned as he eased the car through another intersection.

”...Am I imagining this?”

”No.”

Luna had been staring out the passenger-side window since they’d left the apartment. Her brows were knitted together.

”I noticed it too.”

She looked back toward Kai.

”There should be people everywhere.”

Kai nodded absently.

His attention never left the horizon.

The smoke had grown thicker.

What had first appeared as a distant ribbon now stretched across nearly half the sky, rising in slow spirals before dissolving into the clouds above. It wasn’t drifting with the wind anymore.

It was moving with purpose.

Leading somewhere.

Leading them.

Beside him, Noah sat unusually still. His hands were folded tightly in his lap, fingers interlocked so hard his knuckles had turned white. Since leaving Apartment 7B, he hadn’t spoken once.

Kai finally broke the silence.

”You okay?”

Noah blinked.

For a moment he looked genuinely confused, as if he had forgotten where he was.

”...I don’t know.”

The answer came quietly.

”I feel like...”

His gaze shifted toward the passing buildings.

”...I’m going home.”

The words settled heavily inside the car.

Nobody knew how to answer.

Because Noah didn’t have a home.

Not really.

Not before Kai had found him.

Yet somehow he sounded certain.

As though something buried deep inside him recognized the destination before the rest of him did.

The remainder of the drive passed in uneasy silence.

Even Daniel stopped making jokes.

That alone was enough to worry everyone.

Eventually the industrial district appeared.

Or what remained of it.

Factories that had once dominated the skyline were now little more than crumbling skeletons of concrete and rust. Empty lots stretched between abandoned warehouses. Weeds pushed through cracked pavement. Rusted fences leaned at impossible angles.

It looked like a place the city had forgotten.

Daniel slowed the car.

”There.”

At the end of the street stood an iron fence.

Behind it waited Ashbridge Station.

At least...

What remained of it.

The faded sign above the entrance still read:

ASHBRIDGE CENTRAL

Most of the letters had fallen away decades ago.

The brick walls were stained black with age. Several windows had been boarded shut. The enormous clock above the entrance had stopped at exactly 11:58.

Luna frowned.

”It looks condemned.”

”It is.”

Daniel pointed toward a weathered city notice attached to the fence.

DANGER

ENTRY PROHIBITED

UNSAFE STRUCTURE

Rain had washed away half the warning.

Kai opened the car door.

The moment his shoes touched the pavement—

The horn echoed again.

Long.

Low.

Mournful.

Everyone froze.

This time it wasn’t distant.

It sounded as though the train had stopped directly behind the station.

Coal smoke drifted lazily through the evening air.

Kai inhaled.

The scent struck him immediately.

Oil.

Steam.

Burning coal.

Warm iron.

It awakened a memory from childhood—a railway museum his father had taken him to years ago.

A strange wave of nostalgia washed over him.

Daniel wrinkled his nose.

”Do you smell that?”

Kai turned sharply.

”You can smell it?”

”Yeah?”

Daniel looked confused.

”Shouldn’t I?”

Luna nodded.

”So can I.”

Noah visibly relaxed.

”Good.”

His voice was quiet.

”I thought I was imagining it.”

Kai looked back toward the station.

Whatever boundary had once separated this place from reality...

It was fading.

The four of them climbed through a gap in the chain-link fence.

The metal groaned softly behind them.

Grass had swallowed most of the parking lot. Nature had spent decades reclaiming the station.

Yet something immediately felt wrong.

Kai spotted it first.

Footprints.

Fresh ones.

He crouched beside the nearest impression.

The dirt around it was still loose.

Someone had passed through recently.

Very recently.

Luna knelt beside him.

”Those aren’t ours.”

”No.”

Kai studied them carefully.

Heavy boots.

Large stride.

Walking toward the station.

Not away.

Daniel frowned.

”So we’re not the first ones here.”

Noah stared toward the entrance.

His expression darkened.

”I don’t think...”

He swallowed.

”...they’re still walking.”

A chill ran through the group.

Nobody argued.

The front doors stood slightly open.

Just enough for darkness to spill through the narrow gap.

Kai placed a hand against the wood.

Cold.

Far colder than it should have been.

The doors should have rotted years ago.

Instead they felt polished.

Almost new.

As though someone maintained them.

Waiting.

He pushed gently.

The hinges made no sound.

The doors swung inward.

The station lobby stretched before them.

Dust coated everything.

Old ticket counters stood abandoned beneath cracked windows. Wooden benches lined the walls. A departure board hung from the ceiling, frozen in time.

No destinations.

No schedules.

Only empty rows.

Daniel switched on his flashlight.

The beam sliced through drifting dust.

”I don’t like this.”

Luna rolled her eyes.

”You never like abandoned buildings.”

”Because abandoned buildings are terrible.”

Despite everything, Kai almost smiled.

Almost.

Then he noticed something.

The dust.

It covered every surface.

Every wall.

Every bench.

Every counter.

Except the floor.

There...

Running through the center of the station...

Were footprints.

Dozens of them.

Some large.

Some small.

Some barefoot.

Some wearing polished dress shoes.

One set appeared tiny enough to belong to a child.

Another looked impossibly old.

All of them moved in the same direction.

Toward Platform One.

None came back.

The realization sent a cold knot twisting through Kai’s stomach.

A sudden draft swept through the lobby.

Somewhere deeper inside the station—

A bell rang.

Once.

Clear.

Bright.

The sound echoed through the building.

Daniel nearly jumped.

”What was that?”

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

Train stations rang bells for one reason.

A train was arriving.

The departure board overhead clicked.

Everyone looked up.

The ancient mechanism groaned to life.

Letters began flipping rapidly.

The board accelerated.

The sound became deafening.

Letters blurred together.

Possibilities.

Destinations.

Lives.

Choices.

Then—

Everything stopped.

Every row went blank.

Except one.

PLATFORM 0

ARRIVING

8:31 PM

Kai looked at his watch.

8:30.

Exactly one minute.

The station trembled.

Not violently.

Like something immense had just settled onto invisible tracks beneath the earth.

Steam hissed.

Metal groaned.

Then came the slow rhythm of enormous wheels turning.

Clack.

Silence.

Clack.

Closer.

Clack.

Closer still.

The sound echoed through the station until it seemed to come from every direction at once.

Noah had gone completely pale.

His breathing grew shallow.

His eyes remained fixed on the dark corridor leading toward the platforms.

”I remember now.”

Kai turned.

”What?”

Noah didn’t look away.

”When the train arrives...”

His voice shook.

Fragments of memory flashed across his face.

Rain.

Suitcases.

A platform stretching endlessly into darkness.

People waiting.

Always waiting.

His hands trembled.

”It doesn’t ask where you want to go.”

Another metallic clack echoed through the station.

Louder.

Closer.

The lights throughout the building suddenly flickered on.

One after another.

Warm golden bulbs illuminated platforms that should have been buried in darkness.

Far beyond the lobby...

A plume of white steam rolled slowly into view.

Something enormous moved behind it.

A silhouette.

Impossible to fully see.

Yet undeniably there.

Noah’s voice dropped to a whisper.

”It asks...”

The steam parted.

A brilliant headlamp ignited somewhere in the darkness.

The beam cut through the station like a rising sun.

For the briefest moment, Kai thought he saw figures standing along the platform.

Hundreds of them.

Silent passengers waiting beside old suitcases.

Watching.

Waiting.

For someone.

For something.

Then the light shifted and they were gone.

Only darkness remained.

Noah stared toward the approaching train.

His eyes filled with a fear he couldn’t explain.

”...why you never left.”
